MAKING A SEMI HOLLOW ELECTRIC THE HARD WAY
« on: August 20, 2008, 09:03:21 PM »
I've always wanted a semi hollow electric, even when I was a kid. However, looking at the ridiculously astronomical prices of semi hollows from PRS and Gibson, can make one weep. I decided to try and see if I had it in me to make one, using basic power tools and lots of elbow grease. Check out how I went about building IMG]http://i110.photobucIMG]http://i110.photobucket.c<a href="http://s110.photobucket.com/albums/n119/ruelc/?action=view&current=Hybrid049.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n119/ruelc/Hybrid049.jpg" border="0" alt="Semi hollow electric"></a><a href="http://s110.photobucket.com/albums/n119/ruelc/?action=view&current=Image000.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n119/ruelc/Image000.jpg" border="0" alt="Semi hollow electric"></a>one.

are you a professional luthier? halos zifrado mo yung PRS bro! Awesome.
How much would it cost? Swamp Ash body, natural finish...

LOL!

kng part time lang siya as Luthier, I guess he won't be accepting any custom Jobs... GM sya kamo... so hobby nya lang siguro yung pagiging Luthier... Sayang! Dami bumilib sa PRS nya... Nagre rewind pa nung Pups...

Bro. I got several original Mahavishnu Vinyls, pati Shakti kumpleto ako,... I even got the book "Inner Mounting Flame" w/ all the arrangements from that album.  I even had a VHS tape of "Fri Night in SF" w/ Larry Coryell & Paco de Lucia. I also got most of his albums in CD... are you really into John Mc Laughlin? way back in the early 80's, may tinatag kaming Mahavishnu Society sa UP College of Music. mga die hard yan kay Coltrane, Miles, Chick, Jaco, at siempre kay John  McLaughlin. that was 2 & a half decades ago man...

a couple of years back, I got a dvd of Crossroads, an all star event organized by EC, who's who ang mga gitarista... kasama siempre si JML.

think we should start a  McLaughlin thread? puro kc Vai, Slash, Dimebag...

Thank you all for the nice compliments. As Erwin said, I have a day job. If not for the fantastic pay, I would give it up and go into guitar making full time. Even pickup winding and rewinds to your specs. you can ask Erwin. I have done several for him. I am also inviting Erwin to test my hollow body. You can then ask him later how it sounds.

BTW, I used mahogany for the body, maple for the contoured top. Too bad the maple was flawed. May worm hole. I shaved almost a quarer of an inch off the top. Mas pronounced sana yung contour. Anyway, this guitar was just a test to see if I can make ahollow body with a contour top.

I used StewMac kits for the humbuckers. Alnico5 bar magnets, #42 poly solderable wire and nickel silver base plates. The bridge is wound to 5,600 turns per coil while the neck has 5,000 turns per coil. DCR is 9k for the bridge and 8k for the neck.

my tele pup set are both custom wound by arcee, that tele is currently with gibson78, he has tried it and so did micsis. sir mike also had two tele bridge pup custom wound, you can get his feedback. i cant believe the clarity , balance and response (ofcourse theres the synergy with the wood and all that make up a guitar). ive ab'd them with some of my stock, branded  sets.. and the custom wounds are just better. kept the custom wound on the tele.  sold the branded , kept the stock too (for unforeseen future events because of deltaslim hehe). sir , pa xerox nyan lollar book!

@tele owners, nickel silver/german silver cover on your neck pup makes a big difference. throw out your chrome covered brass.

I believe that the definition of definition is reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself.

Completely.

Just a question.  In one of your posted pics, you were burning something with a kitchen lighter on top o f the guitar.  Can I ask what you were doing?

sir san kayo nakatira?
Check out my post sa "Laguna Guitarists".

Likewise. I was fortunate enough to see him live, nilapitan ko pa para interviewhin, kaso nasigawan ako...LOL! check out my posts sa John Scofield & Chick Corea threads.

Apir! Ikaw lang yata alam kong may tattoo ni JML. a decade back gusto ko rin magpa tattoo niyan, along w/ Miles & Coltrane... kaso both of my arms meron na ( Jimy Hendrix sa kanan, Monster Licks w/ snakes sa Les Paul neck sa kaliwang braso naman)... dami pakong gusto ipadag dag, kaso yung mga anak kong high school eh gusto rin magpa tattoo...Freak out si mrs. ko eh...

I have that album (LDS). pina autograph kopa mismo kay Devadip Carlos Santana. Na interview ko siya when he had his Asian Tour. nahawakan ko mismo yung apat na PRS niya. hehehe... one of my students had his PRS signed by Carlos, ako Yamaha SG lang at mga vinyls napa pirmahan ko... OT na yata ako ha... LOL!

if you said 2 1/2 decades ago, ginagawa pa lang ako non. at malamang sounds sa bahay non tears for fears , police at clash puro punk at new wave.

LOL! yes. nasa kwarenta mahigit nako bro. LOL!
