styropore/styrofoam for sound proofing?
« on: October 16, 2006, 10:43:17 AM »
i'm looking for a cheap solution but still effective
for soundproofing.

i already used rockwool sandwiched inside gypsum boards
for my partition and it's effective but rockwool is really expensive.

i need to make another partition for the other room to isolate the
sound coming from the other room.

question sirs.
instead of using rockwool, can i just use styropore/styrofoam (2" thick)?
same procedure, sanwiched between 2 gypsums.

or 2" rebonded foams?

one more question sirs,

which is the right material to use for soundproofing the walls?
is it rigid rockwool, blanket type rockwool or blanket type fiber glass?
sandwiching between 2 gypsum boards.

thank you very much.

good day sirs.

i tried gypsum boards already.
i want to try this hardiflex also.
what do you think sirs?
is hardiflex the same as with gypsum board?
or which is better for soundproofing purposes?

thank you very much

do NOT use styrofoam.  this is highly flammable and toxic.  buy acoustic foam... works better, flexible, and does a much better job.

gypsum board is cheaper than hardiflex... but hardiflex works better IF you match the thickness (1/2" hardiflex boards is better than 1/2" of gypsum).

There are 2 rules for soundproofing...

heavier = better
airtight = better

Nothing beats a solid concrete wall.

I PM'd you.

16 kgm glass fiber would do the job if you are going to put it in between walls.  Although the denser the glass fiber the better, in terms of sound proofing, the important thing to remember is the wall that will stop the sound.  Thus, thicker, denser walls are better (yes, as jplacson said, heavier, better).  Although solid concrete is definitely good, you can achieve the STC properties of concrete by doing a sandwich type wall.  The glass fiber inside is there to prevent resonances inside the wall cavities, not to impede the sound.  Hence, rolled glass fiber (cheaper) is okay.  Also, better if you can make the wall thicker - by double the thickness of the wall and employing an air gap.  Instead to using 2 inch walls, you can use 4 or 6" studding plus gypsum walls.  Put one gypsum on one side and two on the other side.  Glass fiber cut and placed in between the cavities.  Caulk all butt joints.  Stagger the placement of the gypsum wall board.

Foam and styropore are not recommended.  Both are flamable and dangerous - toxic.  Glass fiber is fine.  No found evidence of it being carcinogen.
