Ian Umali is one of the greatest player I admire. My band do covers of P.O.T. and All I can say is sobrang sarap at hirap nya gumawa ng mga riffs.  :-)

right!

bata pako nun sa school namin sa pampanga and they had a concert sa campus...

POT with Sugar Hiccup...

gear fanatic na din ako nun so patingin-tingin sa setups...(we fronted for them)

Ian Umali used a Gibson Hollowbody (probably a 335) a burst and really nice tone!

his pedals (walang pedalboard, as far as i can tell) was just a Boss Yellow Pedal

(malamang a SD-1) and a Dunlop Crybaby Wah Pedal and that's it!

grabe they were at the peak at that time..insane musicianship...

may cover pa nga sila nung set nila..one was parang joke jam ng

"pasko na sinta" ko really melancholic jazzy version and ung hindi ko

makakalimutan na cover nila which was "Just The 2 of Us" funky jazz version

whoa and his lick were pro-superb!

rock on!!!

yup some songs rhcp nga...

known kasi sila for being a Funk-Rock Band (yugyugan na)...

pero listening to "Panaginip" or "Pieces of This" (may faves)

will give you some of their jazz sensibilities...

"Monkey on my Back" - jazzrockfunk style licks here and there too...

cool!!!

Before POT,Ian came from a Metallica tribute band called "Leper Messiah" back in the early 90's,nung na disband yung leper,di ko na alam kung saan napad-pad si Ian pero yung drummer nila napunta sa pinoy rap metal band na "Erectus". For guitars naman,he used a 335 copy(Yamaha Super Axe,i think)
throughout the album, and for the od,an SD1. He is now currently running his own studio. :-D

what happened to his recent band with Paraguya still on bass and Sago's/POT studio drummer on drums?
Nag usap kami ni Mally last week, naglaho lang yung banda as they went on seperate "rackets". Mally is now a producer at viva records and does sessionwork.

They will release a guitar oriented album, ala "rule of the guitar" this coming April 3 yata.It will feature some of the most prominent guitarists in the industry.

Haven't heard Ian's solos that much, but what amazes me about the guy is his killer rhythm chops.

When he does his funky strumming (a.k.a. 'kaskas  :-D), it all locks in SOOOO tightly with Mally's solid bass lines and Harley's lovely drumming (and there's another amazing drummer as well)

IAN UMALI?

He's one of my local guitar idols. sobrang galing at hindi nakakasawa pakinggan. POT album never left my car. sarap talaga sa tenga.

Last time I saw Ian during an editing session for my latest Corporate Audio Visual Presentation for my office. He's one of the musical scorers for a good Production House/Studio in Makati.

While I was watching him working, sobrang kalmado and very accommodative. Before I left the studio, nag-VOW talaga ako sa IDOL ko!!!!

Astig si sir Ian... Nice riffs, and ung genre naginagamit nia. I've seen him play sa 70's dati, and ang simple lang nung set up nia. With a funky bass groove tapus super lagkit na palo ng drums, plus the voice of sir Karl, man, sarap mag-gitara nian... Lahat sila astig and versitile... Sayang, one album lang... left me craving for more.

hello, maraming salamat sa compliments!
here's a list of the gear i've used (and still use), para di na kayo manghula :-D

- Greco ES335 jap-copy, semi-hollow, formerly sun-burst, now black. 1st electric guitar i've ever owned (1988, 2nd-hand, for php3,200!)

- Boss OD2 Turbo Overdrive, also bought back in '88, painted black para mag-match sa dating gawa-gawa na wooden pedalbox

- Ibanez WH10 wah pedal, in my opinion the best wah sound, but it was made of plastic and broke easily if you have a heavy foot like i do. naka-dalawa nako nun...

- JD Crybaby (pots get dirty & noisy after a while, kaya di ko na ginagamit)

that's my basic set-up for playing live, although at one point i used to also have a Boss Chorus Ensemble for clean parts. my amp of choice is the Fender Twin Reverb (can't afford), and Peavey amps. for some reason my guitar/gear setup does not agree with Marshalls, so i avoid using them.

for the (p.o.t) album, all the clean parts were recorded through a (rented) Fender Twin, the distorted parts i got with a Mesa-Boogie Dual Rectifier amp, rekta, no other effects, lots of gain!
the acoustic guitar parts were courtesy of (i'm pretty sure) Bopip Paraguya's 12-string Martin.

nowadays when i do studio work, i use a Digitech RP12 (same one i used for the "mga gitarista" album launch, and only because the song needed it).

yun lang, maraming salamat uli, mabuhay kayong lahat!

ayos ayos.  Mabuhay din kayo sir.  The first time I ever saw you play was at Kalye bar back in 1993 I think.  it was a week before Metallica played in Manila and you were covering for Razorback because they were rehearsing or something for the Metallica gig.  You were using the same guitar then and I found it amazing that for that guitar, you were doing awesome Metallica covers with you on vocals.  I can't really remember the name of your band but I remember rocking to it.  I was only 13 then kaya marinig lang yung Metallica(kahit covers) live, ayos na.

Astig.  Good to know you're still around.  I'm a fan of your work.  Last time I saw you play was with Indio-I then Wunjo shortly after that at Xaymaca.

You rock buddy!

I saw you playing this on RJTV, 10 years ago I think. You were being interviewed and you were showing some pentatonic scales.

demet, those were the days! hehehe i'm planning to upload some old videos of that band ('leper messiah", obvious na adik sa metallica no?) on youtube as soon as i edit them. back then i used the same 0d2 turbo overdrive pedal, but with a boss parametric EQ to cut-out the mids and boost the lows (para medyo ma-approximate yung sound ni hetfield, even with smaller amps). masaya rin talaga yung panahon na yon...

i can do the rhythm part pero sa lead parts hirap... try to improvise na lang...
pero ang laki ng tulong para mag improve ung skill as a guitarist through your riffs hehe

skunkyfunk, how do you know about my dad's guitar? anyways, it's a '62 (or '63?) stratocaster na sunburst dati, but he had it painted red kasi idol niya si hank marvin ng the shadows! and, yes i have used it a few times, mostly for recording my personal stuff. may binabagayan lang talaga yung single-coil sound nun...

this might be the wrong forum for it, but i've uploaded two 1997 performances of "yugyugan na", orig pa kulay ng #1 ko! (nagsisisi ako)
please check out my channel, there are links to other uploaded vids like the myx broadcast and our rehearsal for "final decision".

Since you're on the thread na, ano na pinagkakaabalahan mo ngayon?  :-)

i've been working as a sound engineer / music arranger for digitrax, an audio post-production house in makati, may 3 years na ata... medyo pahinga muna sa pagbabanda, wala na akong pahinga pag kasabay ng work-sked ko. i've also re-visited an old hobby of mine, since before learning how to play guitar - remote-controlled cars! may pagka-adik ako dito, as you will see in my video posts. pero siyempre kelangan original scoring ang music ko sa kanila! if you get a chance to watch them, that's partly what i do at work  :-D

the heavy guitars are all products of my digitech RP12 & a Peavey Express 112, miked with an SM57. i just tweaked the factory presets to get the sound i wanted.

hello, maraming salamat sa compliments!
here's a list of the gear i've used (and still use), para di na kayo manghula :-D

- JD Crybaby (pots get dirty & noisy after a while, kaya di ko na ginagamit)

that's my basic set-up for playing live, although at one point i used to also have a Boss Chorus Ensemble for clean parts. my amp of choice is the Fender Twin Reverb (can't afford), and Peavey amps. for some reason my guitar/gear setup does not agree with Marshalls, so i avoid using them.

for the (p.o.t) album, all the clean parts were recorded through a (rented) Fender Twin, the distorted parts i got with a Mesa-Boogie Dual Rectifier amp, rekta, no other effects, lots of gain!
the acoustic guitar parts were courtesy of (i'm pretty sure) Bopip Paraguya's 12-string Martin.

nowadays when i do studio work, i use a Digitech RP12 (same one i used for the "mga gitarista" album launch, and only because the song needed it).

Ian, were you part of Leper Messiah when you played at the Lourdes School campus back in '93?  Because that performance was memorable.

At the school fair. lol

hanep stompbox, napanood mo yun?!? hehehe yes, sa leper messiah nga ako back then, pero that performance was setup by jolly, ako lang at yung drummer, si darwin deaņo (from erectus) ang taga leper. pinakilala ni jolly sa crowd yung band as "the superband", and the bassist na nagwasak ng gitara was louie talan! may footage pako nun, pero naka hi-8 format pa, kailangan ko pa i-digitize...

1st i get the tempo of the song (for example, 100 bpm), then i divide it by 60 (seconds) - you get 1.600 for a whole note-value delay time. divide that by 2, you get .800 for a half-note value, divide it further by 2, .400 is quarter note, .200 for eight-note... etc.

i know i have a chart at home that even has values computed for triplets and dotted notes, di ko lang hinahanap pa. i pretty much do the same thing for phaser/flanger settings, tas yung mix ko ng original sound and effect is at about 80% orig, 20% effect, depending on the sound i'm after.

yung sa final decision, from what i remember, i used a plug-in for the phaser effect, which was added na sa mix. di kasi ako masyadong magamit nun, but when i was mixing the song, napagtripan ko lang and na-typan ko na rin kaya ayun... also, most of the time i will use that computation kung delay-effect talaga ang gagamitin ko. otherwise, if it's just a chorus or phaser, di ko na masyadong kinakarir & i just listen if it sounds nice (to me)  :-D

Yeah, that was Louie nga! hahaha.  Though I still can't reconcile the guitar-smashing Louie with the Louie of today hahahaha.

Then Jolly gets the mic and growls "Gusto nyo ba ng METAAAALLLL???"  Then the high school principal was like "Noooooooo wayyyyyy" in fear.  :-D

PLEASE digitize it. Let's just say that performance changed everything in our school afterwards.  :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

matagal na kasi naming pangarap (at that time) na makawasak ng gitara on stage, so jolly went and bought these really cheap guitars, yun lang nga, 1 guitar and 1 bass lang, so louie got his chance, while i was stuck with my numberOne...
hehehe ako yung sumigaw ng "gusto nyo ba ng metal..!"
sige pipilitin ko ma-upload sa youtube this weekend, pero gagawan ko ng special edit-down para di ganun kahaba

ive been a fan of ian umali since the P.O.T. days...galing ng mga guitar riffs & licks...he mostly uses hollow/semi hollow guitars(ES335 copy),used to be in a POT cover band, ang hirap ng guitar parts nya especially when youre using a strat....hehehe...
i watched the POT reunion gig @ 70's Bistro a year or two ago...here's some pics...he uses an ES 335 copy(not sure of the brand), pedals - ibanez weeping demon wah & a boss turbo overdrive(painted in black) ata??? can't remember as i was too drunk that night... 8-) :-D 8-)
