what is a good drum solo for you?
for me, showmanship matters more than sheer technical ability. by showmanship, its not just stick twirling or crossing of arms/legs or having a monstrous kit; its the way a drummer projects himself to the audience.
and when i want showmanship i look to the guys in the early jazz and bebop movement like gene krupa and lionel hampton
here's a clip from the dvd classic drum solos
their performance level is way up there. they incorporate their musicality, talent and showmanship and manage to draw audiences in by just their facial expressions. its like they are acting while playing awesome licks. they dont do 45 minute solos (with the exception of buddy rich of cource) but they manage to put in so much excitement in 2 minutes.
