Title: Controlling Humidity
Post by: bunyok23 on May 25, 2017, 05:06:34 PM
i see a lot of mid and high end guitar owners here. Very humid here in the Phils and yes also hot during summer(now).

what steps do you take to control humidity/temperature?

Here are my personal guitar maintenance tips; note that the temperature and humidity values are not necessarily the ones recommended by experts, but more of what is within the controlled values in the room where i keep my guitars:

1. store guitars in hard cases in an upright position; do not place beside exterior walls
2. buy a digital hygrometer, mount it on a wall
3. place at least two silica gel packets inside cases (do not use those large dehumidifiers in canisters—they absorb water too fast and might do more harm than good when kept inside cases for long)
4. as much as possible, avoid using the guitar when the temperature is too hot and/or too humid (30.0 degrees Celsius, >67% humidity)
5. when temperature and humidity conditions are ideal, make it a habit to air out your guitars and cases (should be done at least once a week)
6. in our climate, air conditioning is generally good for guitars, but allow a few minutes for instruments to adjust to the cold temperature before taking them out of their cases; also watch out for the air becoming too dry (<30% humidity)

Thanks for the reply. Interesting tips.

I actually bought i dehumidifier. To remove excess air.

Humidity effects are worst on acoustic guitars as they bulge around the bridge and make the action high.

I store my LP in a soft case with the dehumidifier running sometimes all day, sometimes not. It gets humid at times or dry. It swings a lot both ways temperature wise but not too extreme.

I'm hoping it would affect the nitro THAT would be cool.

I have a dehumidifier in my room where I keep my guitars. Silica gel inside the case is a must too. Plus I put small buckets of charcoal discreetly in the room to help absorb moisture.

Just happened to find this topic through google.
I do have the same problem.. I already have mini dehumidifiers (eva dry) in all my guitars' hard cases, plus bamboo charcoal packs, pero yung reading ng hygrometer is still at 60-70%.

Looking at buying a full sized  dehumidifier pero nasa 30k siya.. From where were you guys able to purchase an efficient dehumidifier and which brand? I was looking at purchasing from the US and have it shipped here (8K lang yung full sized  dehumidifier) kaso ang problem is walang service center dito.

Thank you so much.

I say dont spend that much pre. You can use that cash for more gear or bills or other nescessities. Most important thing is
severe temperature swings like if you have a heated room and you bring the guitar outside where its snowing thats a problem.
Acoustic guitars if really expensive or you really value it then go ahead but electrics basta just gauge your comfort level when your in the room.

Yun yung dilemma pre..
My wife's urging me to buy kahit ung mahal na dehumidifer kasi baka ma-affect lang yung acoustic guitars. Both are all solid (a breedlove and a taylor 714).
Kaso ung 30k, pwede na makabili ng GS Mini hehe, that's why I'm looking for a cheaper but efective alternative :)

well nasa HongKong ako at mataas humidity rito kaya ang daming mga klaseng dehumidifier. I got mine second hand real cheap and a workhorse.
I don't know kung merong parang second hand used market in your area pero pati ako nahirapan bumili ng dhumdifier sa Pinas. Lahat puro bago.
