Affordable Microphones and Interfaces for Home/PC Recording
« on: December 13, 2016, 06:35:49 PM »
Hello, folks!

I'm building (well, "assembling" rather is the right term) a home recording/rehearsal studio and I'm looking for a good/semi-pro setup.

I'm planning to get a Shure SM58 for a mic and I'm also looking for a good affordable audio interface to connect to my PC.

Will be recording drum, guitar, bass, and vocal tracks in the "studio"

any other recommendations? Thank you!

If youll be performing as a one man band and will record the tracks one after another, a 4 input interface will be the minimum for the drumset mics. If it will be simultaneously, at least 8. Check focusrite, alesis, and presonus brands. You can do purchase a sole interface, or what they call now as mixerface- a mixer with USB/firewire connection capability.

Well I have an electronic drum kit (Medeli dd315) and an amp to accompany that and I'll record each track separately, so... there.

E-drum will be recorded in a mix already by its module so it will be a 1 track recording. Depends on your preference, it will be from USD 200 to 1000. Yes, it will be recorded separately for a better mix using DAW but would it be done simultaneously/parallel? If I'm getting that you will be recording one at a time (one man band) then focusrite interface (2+ inputs) can do the job. Latency issues can be a problem but you can easily sync the tracks in the DAW after.

make sure to get an interface with midi inputs. this will make drum sound replacement easier. record the midi from your medeli so you can use better/realistic drum vsts.

10,500 yung 2i4
Mga 8-9k yung audio technica mic.

Ako kasi gamit ko eh yung focusrite 2i2 studio (included yung focusrite cm-25 mic.tsaka headphone)
Tapos midi map nalang yung drums.)

Sinuggest ko yung 2i4 kasi alam ko may midi in/out yan kung yun kailangan mo. :)

JB music bro, alam ko sa channel website meron din.

Hmmm, not bad prices I guess.

But I'll save up for em first. I do have a Zoom Q2HD at home, will that suffice temporarily for recording?

Video recorder yun ba?

For proper recordings to be "mixed" mas maganda may audio interface talaga. Ganito kasi workflow ko para magka idea ka.

-Program drums, through midi-mapping. (Software lang gamit ko, wala ako enough mic and room to record drums)
-record guitar and bass plugged into an interface (gumagamit nalang ako ng amp and cab simulation softwares like lepou)
-record vocals (mic plugged thorugh interface scarlett 2i2)
- start mixing

Yep is a video recorder with a great-sounding mic.

Yep I understand what you mean, I just plan to use the Q2HD temporarily while I save up for a DAW and mic for "real" recording.

Thanks for the flow, though. That's exactly what I needed to know in home recording. :)

^

Pwede naman, pero pwede ba siya gamitin as mic lang? Halimbawa sa DAW while recording tracks siya ang input source mo?

Kung hindi kasi, at irerecord mo guitars, bass etc. through that mic, tapos transfer to pc, then to DAW then align to sync medyo matrabaho. Pero if you can make it work then pwede of course.

Yes actually! It can be hooked up to a video recorder/processing program like Movie Maker or VirtualDub or as a mic via Audacity. :)

^^I tried the mic placement for the Zoom Q2HD pero ampanget hahahaha.

Is the M-Audio USB Producer mic good enough as a starter mic? Does it work/go well with guitar amps especially when recording distorted tones?

i got the same setup as yours. Im currently using the following:
daw: sonar x3
interface: line6 pod ux2
drum software: superior drummer 2
mic: samson co3
---

I havent had a chance to use usb powered mics, pero based on review, malayo talaga sound sa regular condensers. you cannot avoid EMI's lalo na usb powered.

i like 57 over i5. mas 3d sounding yung 57. i5 is nice but it sounds and feels like an entry level mic - ewan ko parang naalala ko lang yung samson mic sa kanya. get a good amp with a good speaker, raise it off the floor, learn on axis/off axis micing and you wont need plugins :D
