well i remember during my younger years..palagi ako tinatamad practicin mga rudiments..kasi gusto ko hataw kaagad sa drumset hahaha...now i know the importance of this rudiments and ang sarap pag in-apply mo na sa set...kaya i always practice this daily...actually may practice pad palagi ako na dala everyday sa office hehehe...pampatangal ng stress na din :mrgreen:

tumigil ako sa pagtatambol noon dahil naisip ko "i will never be an excellent drummer if i don't practice my rudiments." sadly, i found them boring.  PERO kung gusto mo maging super-drummer with special magical mystical powers, kailangan mo sila matutunan. 

haven't checked gep's post yet (i promise to be good this time, aaralin ko na) but in addition to the paradiddle eto yung mga naaalala ko (salamat B. Go):

single strokes - LRLR, RLRL
double strokes - LLRR, RRLL
accented triplets - LRLRLR AND VICE VERSA
isa pang klase ng triplets na di ko alam ang official name - LLR, RRL
isa pang triplets - LLL, RRR  useful yan sa samba :)
flam - LR and viceversa the two notes are executed very close to eachother, halos magkadikit.

there are also several ways of executing these rudiments:

the throw pull technique and wrist action. 

NEVER get addicted to the throw pull technique before developing your wrists.  the throw pull technique is great for ghost notes on the snare (and hats) but won't get u very far with toms.  kailangan sa toms mas malakas, use your wrists.

I believe every rudiment has its significance.

But just like what Master Mar taught me and most of his students, rudiments are essentially build out of three elements...  single strokes, double strokes, and flams.

madali lang mag-single strokes eh yun ang unang natututunan pag nagsisimula magdrums. pero once you've mastered double strokes, a whole world of new ideas will come rushing at you so fast you won't know what to explore first!

probably the single strokes because it is the most commonly used rudiment.

Yup, malaking pagbabago ang nangyari simula nung napanood ko yun. Malaking improvement sa rudiments and a new insight on drumming. I'm still figuring out kung pano translate sa brush though hehe....

I use paradiddles most of the time, iba-ibang accent at version nga lang. Bale kasi combination sya ng single at double stroke,tapos flam paradiddle at buzz rolls.

Ya we know doubles are RR LL. but how are you suppose to practice them?
set the metronome to a certain BPM and then just play doubles till your hand gets sore? or mix them up with singles?

hmmm..nice question manson...how do i practice a certain rudiment..

if you are an office working drummer..try to practice it during your breaktime, idle time or whnever your boss is not around..hahaha..thats why i always have my practice pad with me..of course practice it with a metronome..drums is instinct and you can feel it yourself if you can speed it up...

start with the right hand then sometimes start with the left hand to make it equal and balance..if you are comfortable already then try to aplly it on the drumset..man whenever i watch wwe or nba i alwys have a drumsticks with me a play rudiments while watching..hahaha..cheers manson...dont forget to teach me those jazz lessons you took..hehehe :wink:

its good to know all rudiments by heart. set the metronome at a comfortable speed then play. tapos try to set it at a tempo below that. better yet, try sa different markings ng metro. and don't play until your hands are sore. :-D sakit un. stop at the first signs of tension, go back sa metro and start again. maganda rin to play along sa mga music tracks, or sing while playing.  :-D

I always start playing very slowly, then gradually increase the speed, and go back slowly again, or play single strokes that sounds like paradiddles,and paradiddles with different accents.

ya what i do in the office is while im sitting i do paradiddles with my feet. Hehe. just to keep me occupied.. try typing while doing rudiments with your feet, its trippy. :-)
even on the MRT, I do feet exercises.

I like practicing to music also, feels good.

pag nasa school ako i do paradiddles with my feet.. kahit ballpen pinag titiyagaan ko nalng basta mkapag prctce lang.. pag nasa school ako tas may tugtugan kmi after class lagi kong hawak ballpen ko pra pwd naring png prctce khit may prof kaso dpat medyo mhina lang bka marinig ng prof.. hehe :)

sa bahay naman bago ako matulog hihimasin ko muna mga drumsticks ko pupunasan tas rudiments prctice na.. hehehe :D

mahirap na pag nagkacarpal... do some stretching... whoa... parang gym..
hehe... kelangan... mas maganda kundisyon ang katawan... kung bahay ka at may
mirror.. face the mirror and look at the height or ur strokes kahit anung rudiments yan...
as much as possible.. sa snare ensayuhin ang rudiments para sa clarity at pantay na sound... sa foot.. ako nilelevel ko ung beater ng double pedals ko sa gilid ng kutson ng
kama ko.. parang drumpad na din ata.. hehe.. pero just doubles.. hirap e..
tapos kung pakalat kalat lang tulad ng mrt/lrt... same thing as mentioned sa mga nauna..
ganun talaga e.. nasa system na natin silang mga rudiments.. tapos minsan binaboy
ko rudiments by playing off accents.. hindi ung usual.. hehe.. kakabwisit.. some things
that you do wen it's a long commute... hehe...
syempre metronome talaga...
and for inspiration on how can you play with rudiments check the name ivan pacheco
in you tube.. damn.. iba na ito.. playing double strokes with one elbow and one trad grip.. so insane.. just watch it.. sa huli nya un gagwin na naka rock on sign pa xia...

ung sandalan mga hihats ko at cymbals,ung upuan mismo ang mga tambol..

i practice without a schedule, meaning...magppractice ako kung nasa mood ako magpractice  :-) luckily nasa mood naman ako halos palagi  :lol:

i practice the basic rudiments (single double flam paradiddle etc.) tapos mix and match (kunwari 3 double, 2 single paradiddle, tapos 3 single) basta kung ano yung matipuhan ko pinapractice ko  :-) sinusubukan ko din yung mga rudiments na ginagamit ng mga drum corps, grabe napaka challenging! hanggang ngayon nga hindi ko pa rin makuha eh!  :lol:

tapos kung saan saan ako nagppractice, snare, floor tom, book, notebook, sahig, upuan...kahit saan!
gusto ko subukan magpractice sa kung ano anong bagay..hindi sa practice pad or sa unan lang  :-)

eto akin.. stretch your hands and arms and fingers... kahit saan..
mahirap na pag nagkacarpal... do some stretching... whoa... parang gym..
hehe... kelangan... mas maganda kundisyon ang katawan... kung bahay ka at may
mirror.. face the mirror and look at the height or ur strokes kahit anung rudiments yan...
as much as possible.. sa snare ensayuhin ang rudiments para sa clarity at pantay na sound... sa foot.. ako nilelevel ko ung beater ng double pedals ko sa gilid ng kutson ng
kama ko.. parang drumpad na din ata.. hehe.. pero just doubles.. hirap e..
tapos kung pakalat kalat lang tulad ng mrt/lrt... same thing as mentioned sa mga nauna..
ganun talaga e.. nasa system na natin silang mga rudiments.. tapos minsan binaboy
ko rudiments by playing off accents.. hindi ung usual.. hehe.. kakabwisit.. some things
that you do wen it's a long commute... hehe...
syempre metronome talaga...
and for inspiration on how can you play with rudiments check the name ivan pacheco
in you tube.. damn.. iba na ito.. playing double strokes with one elbow and one trad grip.. so insane.. just watch it.. sa huli nya un gagwin na naka rock on sign pa xia...

Lalo na my showband plays a lot of house music. Kelangan ng endurance. Pero ang tagal ko na ginagawa sumasakit pa rin eh. So i switched from heel down to heel up. Yun, medyo satisfied ako sa sakit na nararamdaman ko. Tipong sakit dahil sa muscle training....

Hmm. Actually wala akong technique sa left foot ko for the hats pedal. Kasi madalang lang siya pumadyak, or minsan nasa ere lang naka lutang.. Kaya ang tendency is mangawit talaga.. Anyway ok lang namn sakin yun. Sarap iunat pagkatapos.

I play double kicks so i do LRLRLR patterns with the feet, Heel-Toe.

With the hands, paradiddles, stressing the E, The Moeller Technique, etc...

Also, warmup sa kit, I play polyrhythms, just to spark up the muscle-mind alertness.

1. Single strokes, yung pabilis ng pabilis tapos naka-metro
2. Double strokes, pabilis ng pabilis tapos naka-metro (ito priority ko ngayon)
3. Basic paradiddle, pabilis ng pabilis tapos naka-metro uli, tapos may random placement ng accent
4. Flamadiddle, naka-metro (di ko pa kaya ang mabilis e, inggit ako sayo Janelle!)

Naisip ko mag share kung ano ang ginamit kong aproach sa pag aral ng 40 Rudiments. Naisip ko kasi makakatulong ito sa mga beginners. Mahirap nga subukan i memorize agad ang 40 so heres what you need to do first. I will give you a list for each to practice based on paano ko nai group ang bawat isa.

Group A (Rudiments # 1-7) "Basic 7"

1. Single Stroke- played as R L R L
2.  Four Stroke roll

4. Multiple Bounce roll

Group A is really basic.

Group B (Rudiments # 8-15) I call it the "Number Rolls"

NOTE: Usually on this group it uses double strokes but has some singles at the end. Each tap is based on the name of the Rudiment itself.

Im not really sure kung may standard sticking ang 7-stroke, but here's another approach to 7-stroke roll which I often use:

R L R R L R L tapos L R L L R L R

Ok to gamiting fills. Just play between snare and hats or toms and add accents anywhere :wink:

         That's a good combination for the 7, combination ng  paradiddle at Triple. Plus yung application mo to form a Linear groove. Try mo yung 7+9 na paradiddle to form a linear fill.

OK Bamm try this one. You'll use R L (Hands) F (foot on bass or HH)  7-9

R L R L L F R L F R L L F R L F
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

What I do is I keep my left hand on the Hi-hat and then Right hand moves around from the snare to the toms clockwise.

Now reverse 9-7

R L L F R L F R L R L L F R L F
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

For this I go backwards still having all my left hand on the Hi hat then the right hand starts from the floor tom at yung direction in counter clockwise. So you'll end on the snare.

Sa oras na kaya mo na itong tugtugin combine  the 7-9 + 9-7 into a two bar phrase.

By the way I got this from Carmine Appice's book "Ultimate Realistic Rock" section is on Linear grooves using rudiments. Try it.

kung sa 40 rudiments ng PAS, 2 ung 7 stroke roll dun. ung una ay ung sa single-stokes, kung saan (tulad na din ng sabi ng iba) LRLRLR L  RLRLRL R. the way i learn and play it, sixtuplets ung division.

yung isang 7 stroke naman ay ung RRLL RRL then LLRR LLR. kung closed siya, each set of double composes 1 sixteenth note. so ung buong RR LL RR L(sixteenth note) ay isang count. although hindi naman standard un, and you can count any way you want, as long as the sticking is correct. :-)


pasok ko lang insight ko sa rudiments and how i practice them:
1) learn the 40 by heart. parang eto na ung do-re-mi nating mga drummers. :) noong sinimulan ko to, i spent an hour each day dedicated lang sa rudiments. sarap ng feeling kapag napapansin mong hindi mo na kailangan tumingin sa kodigo mo. :)
2) start slow. make sure you are able to play the rudiments slow. mas challenging minsan. at wala naman tayong standard speed na dapat abutin sa rudiments e, important ay alam natin iplay with great ease and control.
3) use a metronome. lahat siguro magaagree dito. para constant ung time mo, avoid rushing and dragging, etc. and using a metronome will prepare you to work with a click track in, for example, recording sa studio, or playing along sa isang track.
4) siyempre i apply sa drumset playing! wag lang puro practice pad! minsan, sa drumset, i play the rudiments sa snare or tom, with my feet doing doubles, singles, etc. parang warm up na rin.

so un, hapee drumming everyone!
@ rex, nice grouping ng mga rudiments. ako kasi 4 lang, rolls, diddles, flam, at drags. ahahaha! very nice, i should take that approach in my practice. :-)

kaso ang paborito ko ito:

paradiddle na magulo... yung feel niya e bumabaliktad ang lead every measure. di ako sigurado kung theoretically sound ito kaso sarap na pang warm up:

i agree doubles and singles, thats really all there is to rudiments besides diddles and stuff...it all comes down to L R L R and ll rr ll rr.

it'll probably be the singles and doubles..after all..this is the foundation of all the other rudiments...

for stick control..

paradiddles at mga anak nito..double paradiddles..

another good exercise..is to use "ala-flam" exercises...

with the other stick raised higher..bring down both sticks to the head, but..instead of a flam..both sticks should land on the head at the same time with the same volume. *bawal ang puh-tak, dapat sabay.."plak"*

Singles stroke rolls, double stroke rolls, flams, paradiddles and drags. But the most important thing about any of these is the strokes used within each rudiment. rlrr or lrll or whatever is only the stick pattern. But what about the combination of stroke types? For example tap strokes verses downstokes etc. It all breaks down the efficiency of the energy used between each stroke. Playing these exercises also (if learned properly) increase control of the stick and it's rebound. It makes for less physical work or strain and more control. This is all beneficial to many styles of drumming.

Bakit po ba mahalagang matuto ng rudiments? San po ba un gagamitin sa drumset? Tanong ko lang po kasi hindi ako na e-encourage na matuto ng rudiments katulad nung mga nasa vic firth website kasi hindi ko naman alam kung san gagamitin, help naman...  :-D

kelangan ang rudiments dahil basics ito, parang ganito, hindi ka naman pwedeng mag pantalon ng hindi nakabrief diba?

lam m ba ung paradiddles? yung LRLL,RLRR? pwede mo silang gamitin with drumfills or as drum rolls, remember to use accents like for example, sinasabayan mo ng bass drum ang cymbals or maghit ng louder note in the middle of a paradiddle

Rudiments are a turn off lang because they sound so academic :D

Tama si lheyzero, basics lang siya. "Rudimentary", meaning "fundamental" or "basic". Singles are rudiments. Alternating singles (left-right-left right-etc...) is a basic thing na you can probably do already. You also probably already do "flams" with your hands and "doubles" with your feet.

Ang importance ng learning rudiments is that if you can do the rudiments well, your body can move na around the drumset. This means that pwede ka na ngayon mag-isip musically kasi hindi mo na iniisip kung paano gumalaw. 

I agree with Mar Dizon when he said that there are only 3 basic rudiments:

1) Single = one stroke with one limb
2) Double = 2 strokes with one limb
3) Flam = one stroke that comes with a ghost stroke

And all other rudiments are just combinations of these 3. If you think about it this way, medyo hindi na siya intimidating. Pwede na sila i-practice between 2 hands, 2 feet, or between hand and foot :D

ah fundamentals lang pala yun kasi nung tumitingin ako sa vic firth eh parang ang hirap nung ibang rudiments na sa tingin ko hindi ko rin magagamit, anyway onga nagagamit ko nga ung ibang rudiments katulad ng flams hindi ko lang alam na rudiments na nga rin yun, thanks!  :-D

ako rin tamad na tamad mag aral ng rudiments at wala pa ko mahanap na dahilan kung pano ko to gagamitin, pero tama si inigo. mas nasasanay yung kamay mo sa pagkilos. siguro un ung advantage ng mga naaral ko. mas gumanda yung control ko.
as for me, i still try to study some rudiments just because it might get handy someday.

I'm no expert but I think you just need a little more patience, first off be sure to make good use of metronome, this really helps. Practice - there is no other choice. And practice in pillows, this strengthens your forearm, wrist and your control. Also find the comfortable grip and technique for you, and practice the rudiments one at a time, don't rush.

About the technique, I hope this helps because it did to me, BIGTIME. Its the open/close technique,

but some also use the wrist technique (whatever they call it) so just choose whichever is more easy and comfortable for you. :-D

sa paradiddle, I sometimes enjoy using catch my breath ni kelly c as background. though mabagal, it sets my mood para sipagin magpractice.  :eek:
