bro, i use a shotgun mic when i do sound design.  that's when i make my own sound effects to use in a tv show.

in theory,  a shotgun mic only records where you point it at.  think it's got a narrower recording field compared to pencil condensers.  also mine has a tele mode which makes the mic more sensitive.  but then it'll let more of the ambient noise seep through.

that's only my noob experience with the shotgun mic.

 :-) :-) :-)

we use Audio Technica shotgun (boom) mics sa aming Community...sir eto po experience namin

we mainly use lang sa ambience lang ng video taping, live worships...etc..pero sa pagkatagal ng gamit namin medyo masasabi ko po na di po maganda reception nya.and with power it gives, medyo mahina pick up ng sound, low quality...ang hirap pa dito...kelangan pang 9v battery sya powered kundi di rin xa gagana...un siguro ang pinalitan ng phantom power with the condenser mics now...

salamat po..ngatz.gbu

@bindoy - definitely use phantom power with condensers although I'm not exactly sure if the AT you're using has electrets instead.

Shotgun mics have extreme directionality because their polar patterns are super-cardioid. They are also sensitive to handling noise. Shotguns are often used in TV and location recording, where side rejection is very important (you often see these mic attached to booms). Handling noise can be reduced by using shockmounts. The length of the mic coupled with the air vents can make it sensitive to wind noise that's why you often see these mics encased in a combination shockmount/wind 'sock'.

All the above comments valid.  Contrary to belief, distance from source to capsule is important - the nearer the sound source, the better.  What app do you intend to use it for?

IMO, stick with a good quality LDC (large diaphragm condenser) if you're going to mic either.

I agree with KitC.  Or use the small stick type condensers, i. e., AKG 451s or Audio Teknica, or Neumann 180s, etc.  If the price is good, it is not bad having a shotgun in your arsenal.  Is it a short or long shotgun?

I agree with this... one can't have too many toys.  OTOH, in retrospect, it's not bad to REALLY have a shotgun. Might come in handy...

its a long shotgun mic. (the model is AKG C 568 EB)

yea i know.. but i figured it looks like a really good deal since its
being sold 1/5th of the price even less i think

in a recording setting,
is there a use for long shotgun mics??
what do they use it for exactly??

You can use it to do SFX in a Foley situation in a studio.  Aside from that, musically, you are better off with the proven studio mics.  You can use it for voice overs.  It is really meant to be used for voice (video and location shoot) applications.

If the price is right, get it.
