Title: Drum Teachers Thread
Post by: ken minneman on October 20, 2015, 02:42:00 AM
Share your drum teaching Experiences and tips here.

First off I know that there is a drum teaching reference Thread, however, I see that thread as a thread in which students look for teachers and mainly as a review thread of who is a good drum teacher.

I basically wanted to create a thread in which the teachers share their experiences and help each other. I trust our Mods. If you see it fit to keep this thread, your call po. Pero sana separate siya dun sa isa for the reasons stated above.

So here we go.

1. Post your experiences here.
2. Tips.
3. Questions.

Let's start with my question:

1. Guys may maipapayo ba kayo sa akin? Estudyante ko 6 years old. Super kulit. As in super. Although matalino pero halos di nakikinig at laging ginagawa ang gusto. How do you handle this.

2. How do you teach Drum Note reading to a kid in a non boring way? Parang ang complicated niya kasi ituro. I get away with it kasi iba kong students mga matatanda na like 15 years old and up pero pano yung 5-8 years old na short attention span?

sa bata i let them play for a while di pwede kasi tutok 1 hour. bata e tsaka i talk to the parents to fish out info and let them
know the status of the kid. and remember iba iba ang tao so adjust ng adjust tayo and thats the hardest thing

Agree with sir harugrugrug. Kailangan puro break then sundot ng serious lesson.

For note reading, you can start with the Kodaly Method. Ito yung kinalakihan ko sa music class sa school, at di naman sya boring. Since hindi naman naka-focus sa pitch ang drum notation, sobrang sakto yung method na ito. The method assigns syllables to note values, and there are hand motions that can be used as well. Pag nagamay na nya yung note values sa Kodaly Method, mas madali na i-introduce sa drums yung notes using the syllables as reference along with your usual one-ee-and-ah.

as for my own teaching experience, medyo virgin pa ako  :lol:
 I only taught one student, once. quick and dirty lessons ang nirequire sakin (ergo, 12 hours dapat nakaka rakenrol na).
of course not the ideal scenario but I had to deliver.

the student was 13 so I can be more serious, and start with the bare basics.
my first lesson involved notes (as in notebook notes) because I had to teach him the parts of a drumset, including drum names, parts of the drum, parts of the hardware, kinds of cymbals, the parts of cymbals, and parts of the stick. sobrang nakakatulong sya in the long run kasi pag nag-aayos ka na ng technique nung student mas madali maging precise (i want you to hit the ride bell with the shoulder of the right stick! needs less demonstration). after that, note reading.

after that I taught the freestroke (medyo nasa dom famularo/jim chapin camp ako ng stick technique), and had him determine which grip he was most comfortable with (american).

bare basic rudiments (single strokes, double strokes, paradiddles, triplets) with metronome, and keeping a close eye on stick technique. then rudiments around the kit.

nasa gitna na ng lessons ako nag introduce ng beats. that one was much harder kasi huhulaan mo kung paano mo aatakihin yung learning ng coordination. may mga mas madali matuto by "layers" (this pattern on this drum, then add another drum's pattern, then another) tapos merong by step/beat. kapaan lang din.

ang homework ko lagi drills lang tapos mandatory viewing ni carter beauford at bernard purdie  :lol:

check your students goals then kasi you might give them info overload bro sonic.
Now relax lang ako teaching,i teach them the very basic stuff. then i would add some technical stuff
then ask for their aspirations as a drummer. Dun mo makikita kung interested and as i found out pag naging
curious na student sa drums thru questions its just a: nag uubos sila ng oras or b: gusto talaga nila or c: may ADHD(seryoso)
first lessons i talk pero no detailed technique stuff pag matanung dun ko sila sasagutin. kasi most of the time they just want to play muna
and you want them to love the drums rather than bombard them with info overload.

in that case, walang goal yung student (ergo, pinilit ng magulang) so I had to balance keeping the student interested as much as possible, while making sure I had "apparent" output. alam mo naman ang mga magulang na ganun, after a several thousand pesos hindi sila mag-eexpect ng flawless paradiddles after 12 hours of tuition. that's why I decided to overload the student with info up front para lagari sa drills after and much less talking or explaining. I usually just give him a handwritten notation and we're good  :lol:

I do feel bad though dahil yun nga may expectations yung parents na parang instant whatever, thinking that drums are easy. Drumset is probably the most complex instrument next to the piano where percussive instruments are concerned.

Thanks guys.. really helpful. I'll see how I can incorporate that to my style.

gagawa nga ako ng play whatever you want session.. iniisip ko sa makulit na bata is sabihan na may potential siya (meron naman talaga) but then he lacks focus.

Then tell him that his bro is doing great. Kapatid niya kasing isa is focused naman, mas bata. But Im thinking kung susundin ko to kasi baka magkaroon ng unhealthy rivalry.

Aralin ko yung Kodaly, tapos as per makulit na bata.. Gagawa ako ng play what ever you want na session, pag naging super kulit. like.. Okay, for 10 seconds, play whatever you want. Ganun.

ok lang per session kung trip mo yung students mo. ako bilang trip ko magturo sa lone student ko nun, so kahit nakaka 4 hours na kami sige lang kasi nag-iimprove naman sya. pero kung tight ang sched, or it needs to pay the bills, make sure you allot only the paid time. mas makakaigi rin kasi may certain positive pressure yung bata na ma-gets yung lesson for the day.

ok yang kodaly kasi yung eighth notes "ti ti" no kidding  :lol:

Senaryo.. Yung 5 years old ko na interested sa drums.. the past first 4 lessons is okay naman.. pero lately.. mga 2 lessons na nakaraan is sobrang kulit na at di nagcocooperate. What can I do? What would you do if you were on my situation?

I don't know about kids but I'd be stricter. It worked for me, as a young student of six, trying to learn the piano. Drill style learning, then only take breaks if there is no progress.

nkapagturo nako ng 5 year old. i first checked kung kaya na ng understanding nya ksi it will be lugi sa parents' side who will be paying for the lessons if hindi pa kakayanin ng level nya. i suggest na you search kung nasan ung interest nya in a day, then just make it educational. dont give him boring stuffs. just let him enjoy, then ur the one to make the schemes educational.

As a teacher in real profession, iba-iba yung interest ng 5yo na bata:
May batang mahiig sa certain things (ex. musical instruments)
1. Focus dun sa gusto nila at pagaralan mabuti yung interest ng bata;
2. Make a strategic plan or set of lessons na makakapag capture ng attention ng bata;
3. Make a reward system for the kids para mas lalo silang ma.challenge sa ginagawa nila at the same time ay matuto sila.

***with that age, wala pa silang masyadong focus sa isang bagay EXECPT kung gustog-gusto talaga nila.

Pero kung wala silang hilig dun, mahirap silang mapilit.
Maaari kang:
1. Magfocus sa reward system at iwasan ang punishment;
2. Hayaan silang maglaro-laro sa pagaaral niyo as long as you're in control (make your lesson enjoyable);

***basta make your lesson enjoyable and attractive :))

happy teaching. :D
