Here is my short review:
Ang Bagong Dugo Sa Lumang Ugat (Unang Kabanata)
Track list:
Kandila - 4:40 (bass-heavy mid-tempo)
Sandata - 4:33 (roller coaster of fast, mid-tempo beats and soaring guitars)
Ang Bagong Dugo Sa Lumang Ugat - 4:01 (classic Wolfgang theme in the veins of Halik ni Hudas)
Bulag - 5:07 (very Semenelin-esque vibe)
All songs are scorching, hard-hitting and heavy. Basti's vocals is his usual powerful howl and scream. The album is mostly social commentary. Talking about plights of common people, a form of revolution, a new hope. There's a positive vibe on the album (Sandata), Äko ang simula ng pagbabago.... Thing is, since it's election time, it may sound like heavy jingle
(Kasanga mong wagas ngayon hanggang bukas. Kaalyado mong tunay sa tuwid na landas...).
The title track (Ang Bagong Dugo Sa Lumang Ugat) can be summed as same [gooey brown stuff] different day. It talks about manipulation of the masses. Same thing with Bulag, as it discuss frustration of not fulfilling one's dreams and blind guides leading the blind.
Over all, the initial offering is a good primer for a good full album to come. All the elements are there. Classic Wolfgang. Superb musicality. But lyrically? They need a good tagalaog/filipino writer. They are struggling in that department somehow. I can't blame them as , I think, English is their first language:
Ang umalsa ay patagong dakpin (Uhhmm, mag-alsa?)
Di matupad ang panaginip. Nagdidilim ang pag-iisip (panaginip as in dreaming while asleep or is it pangarap as in hopes and dreams?)
I rate this EP as 4/5.
