First Ever Strat Tone Party/Jam
« on: November 21, 2006, 08:19:19 PM »
hey people, anyone willing to join/participate in a strat tone party? it doesn't necessarily mean pang fender strats lang, basta strat, mapa-fender, tokai, graco, aria, or any copy pa man yan.

ano game? isip tayo kung saang place and when.

of course, we'll have snacks. kanya-kanyang dala, ala-pot luck, hehe.

Hey guys!

Good idea, but why not just play music instead?

If I may offer a dissenting opinion, the very notion of a 'tone party' may foster more confusion, angst, insecurity and envy rather than harmony.

I mean, how/ who judges the tones?

Who's standards will you be using?

What do you exactly mean by 'vintage' tone?

We guitar players definitely take pride in our instruments, and I'm sure to our ears (and maybe our eyes), there's a very good reason why why picked the guitars that we have right now.

But to put those guitars in some sort of a 'contest' may seem kind of a pointless - if not futile - exercise.

Why? Simply because all strats sound different. Some may be more 'vintage-y' than others. Some may sound Les Paul-ish even. Some may sound great overdriven while some others excel in clean tones.

Now, can you imagine someone walking away from that tone party shaking his head and saying, 'awwww man ... my strat sucks. It's nothing compared to the big boys' toys.'

There's nothing worse than a bruised ego, right? And what do you nurse it with. Gas? You tell yourself. 'oh, maybe I should change my pickups to ________ (insert brand here), or maybe change my trem block, or have a refret, or ... or get a new strat altogether ...'

And by the law of averages, if there are good strats, I'm sure there will be some bad strats there. Now, tell me, can any of you have the courage to tell someone that his guitar sucks? I'm sure you wouldn't .. :-)

So, there's the rub ..

I'm sorry if I seem to be going against the tide here. I don't mean to ruin any such plans that have nothing but the best intentions for everyone. But I'm just kinda worried about the very notion of a 'contest' where the standards to be used can't be quantified objectively.

All I know is that guitars - Strats, Les Pauls or what have you - were created to make music, and I hope that's what we end up doing in the end..

aha! good point bro! let's make it a jam then! all strats! hehe. then we can have that tone party in smaller scales na lang, siguro.

ok! jamming na 'to. so studio sa makati ang possible venue. bring your strats. strats lang welcome, and shempre bass. kailangan na rin ng drummer ngayon, hehe. then maybe we can play songs na identified with strats like hendrix stuff, SRV, eric johnson (manhattan bro deacon? hehe), even john mayer, hehe.

instead na parang contest ang dating, we can make it a strat appreciation party, hehe. i'd think better yun. tama ka, mahirap na tamaan ng GAS after mo malaman na hindi pala ok strat mo. maging cause of GAS pa tayo, hehe. i, for one, ayoko na rin mag-GAS, hehe. i got my last strat and i hope it stays last, hehehe.

anyway, sige strat jam na lang, hehe. list na tayo ng songs...

1. manhattan? hehe
2.
3.
4.

Sounds better, peewee!

EJ songs definitely! I'm sure anton would more than be willing to take his 'new' strat for a spin.

Shempre, Hendrix stuff like 'Lethal Wing' (?!?!), 'Wind Cries Mary' and the like.

And shempre, may smooch jazz, like Ritenour's 'Early A.M. Attitude' or Carlton's 'Smiles and Smiles To Go' ...

Since it's gonna be raining strats then, I'll take the low end ..  :-)

Game ako dito. I will bring my two strats. Sana Makati or Pasig Area. And for the people who live with commanders, can we make not so late?

Kung studio, we have to look for one with a big room. I can bring my amp (two inputs).

As for songs, sadly, too much law s**t has entered my mind and I don't have a list memorized. Sali na lang ako sa free jam if it's a blues progression.

hahaha, "Lethal Wing", coz it's badly twisted when i play it!

I almost said "gulp!" to the idea of having a strat shoot out, but having a strat summit / jam would be great! do i have to bring mine? coz if mike brings his 70's strat, i'll be glued to that! heheheh!

kewl :) count me in!!!

Walang shootout, no "my lolo's strat is better than your lolo's" and no our tone sucks kind of thing.

Let's have this as fun as it should be. We are all musicians here. Let's meet and greet each, share tips on maintenance and what have you.

I may not be as skilled as the guy above me but I will always be fan of o music, the guitar and the strat.

So, when shall it be? I have to tell my wife na para may prior notice. You know how it is guys.

Dagdag ko sa suggested tunes ng mga classic Strat tones:

Texas Flood/Pride and Joy/Sky is Crying/Mary had a little lamb - SRV
Voodoo Child - Hendrix (pwede ring SRV)
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
I Was Walking Through The Woods - Buddy Guy

damn this tone party's gonna be a knockout.......
madami talaga ang strat boys sa philmusic. cant wait to see Joric's toys.

SRV to go basta strat party. Better start reviewing.......
cant wait to see your strats feefol!

Suggestion ko lng , if we are on a tight budget, might as well coordinate with a forumite that has a studio para less expenses tau, more on the food....baka me booze pa yan....heheheh. kung kelanagn ng addtl amp, i'll be glad to pinch in my Park Amp, the next best thing to a Marshall of course.

Attention: psychic_sushi and BAMF!!!    ;-)
