guys dagdag ko lang. i was suppose to start a new topic about this pero nabasa ko itong thread mukhang di nalalayo yung isusulat ko. hehehe

lately gusto ko magawa yung 16th note sa hihat na isang kamay lang, mabagal lng kasi kaya ko. i got INSPIRED from watching jeff porcaro video on how he played "i keep forgetting by michael mcdonald). i asked mar dizon to suggest some exercises and he told me to try the moeller. tapos naalala ko may topic si dom famularo sa book nya about the moeller stroke. when i open the book, i saw his autograph to me. it says "ENJOY EVERY NOTE YOU PLAY!" ayun i got INSPIRED again na i  should enjoy every note whenever i play. di ba pag feel mo yung kanta parang sarap mo paluan. suggestion lang pag nadedepress ka sa palo mo, try to play along to your favorite song. yung masarap yung groove! then i got INSPIRED again to write this post. yun lang bow! hehehehe

Tama si sir vinci! Actually, tama silang lahat haha.
And when you're thinking of quitting drums, remember the reason that got you to play drums in the first place. Go back to your roots and start again from there.

makes me think about quitting drumming and focus on studies,
anyways,
more than the skills,
it's how you apply it that is more important,
so how do you guys keep yourselves inspired?
Ive been there, when my band broke up..I didn't play for months maybe, but its hard to turn your back against something that you really love doing..I just listen to other genres of music and find some new things to play....drumming is a learning process, as well as life...........

just wanna thank everyone who helped me out during my low times in drumming,

laking 2long nung eb,

pero for sure magagaling kyo!

tska k sir vaisteen2003,
maraming salamat
pinapanood ko yung vid na un lagi
salamat sir!

and k sir chanocreeze naman,
salamat din po,
pero ndi ko naman iniignore si God,
actually,

also,
nagbabasabasa ako sa forum ng gospelchops,
galing ng mga drummers dun!
ganda nung groove nila,
sana makuha ko din yun,

i read through the pages of your thread and i noticed one of your replies which cited that you focus too much on the technicalities...

you know what bro, ive been through that state lately and i sort of got frustrated myself. hell im not a good drummer myself (very newbie material in fact) but i surely wanted to improve my overall drumming so i looked into the technical side of drumming, from the way i held my sticks, various positions of feet on the peds, stricking techniques, dynamics, even note reading...almost the whole lot. i can fairly say that ive improved but i have to be honest i didnt have fun. it was cool learning new stuffs and techniques but at the end of the day i told myself--sure drumming is an endless learning experience and it pays to be technical once in a while but i sort of asked myself rin "where is the fun in that?" i mean "where is the fun in drumming?" the answer to that really varies and depends on the person...so i sort of reflected and asked myself "what makes drumming 'fun' for me and me alone?"

at that point i said: ok tama na muna technical side, back to jamming with friends and music tracks and apply what i learned when i went technical. and indeed my drummin improved a bit, not a whole lot, but better than nothing.

my point is, it pays to look at the technical and learning side of drumming once in while, but i guess, just as anyone else, concentration on training a lot tends to wind people down...you also got to get in there and define what makes drumming fun and enjoyable to you and go do it. training, take a step back, have fun, evaluate, relax...its a fun cycle i guess if you put it that way. kumbaga sa school, pag aral na lang ng aral, di ba nakakatamad and sawa minsan pag di naman na-a-apply.

i say learn, relax, have fun, assess how youre doing, take a breather, and yep it pays to have someone to look up to in various aspects in life.  ako in drumming, i look up to several foreign drummers and a couple of local pinoydrummers. not only do i get inspired by their drumming, i also check out who and what inspires them.

for example: i look up to taylor hawkins of foo fighters, when you dig deep, you can see an obvious similarity of his style with stewart copeland. why? coz he admires, emulates and is a copeland diehard. another, jose pasillas, listen to his creativity, then listen to billy cobham of mahavishnu orchestra. you'd see so much adaptations on there. one more, dave abbruzzese, listen to manu katche and jerry larotta of peter gabriel's plays live and shaking the tree albums and you can probably ascertain where he got his inspirations specially evident in versus and vitalogy albums. not that theyre carbon copies of their idols, each one also brings forward their own unique voice and leaves a 'trademark' in each song they punch in view of their inpirations.

but i also say, in life you gotta choose the right people who will inspire you. and inspire you to do good and your best, they must! not the otherwise. coz the person you will turn out to be depends on them rin.

okidoks, sorry i got carried away. but cheer up, we go through similar drum ruts, it happens to the best of us and is there for a reason...question is, what are you gona do about it?

i guess that's what really put me down,

that's really good that you make a way to improve your skills. i'm not a good drummer myself but i can say i'm improving since i find ways to do it. yung mga technicalities, importante lang for me is to know the fundamentals. kahit tamang paghawak ng sticks, posture...yung iba bahala na...hehe

also, always ask for guidance kay Lord...like what chanocreeze said...i too, went back into drumming because i want to serve JC...i don't sing, i don't know any other instruments but drums...so that's where i am now. i stay focus in glorifying His name, whenever i play. kahit na ndi ako magaling, gumalgaling ako sa harap Nya...ang sarap dba?!

for sound_tech, don't feel bad if some people are criticizing you on how you play...wala namang taong pinanganak na may hawak nang stick, dba?! i mean, lahat talaga dumadaan sa mga ganun...take it as a challenge...

how do you guys deal with frustration?
« Reply #43 on: September 06, 2007, 10:39:02 PM »
napaisip lang ako, kasi right now, i'm getting really pent up with double strokes on my hands. gusto ko kasi talaga bilisan at gawing malinis, pero minsan kasi sumasablay lalo na kapag matagal na ko nag-prapractice, pumapangit and/or hindi ko ma-execute ng tama (like when i do 4 doubles with both hands). don't get me wrong, my doubles have gotten better over the last 2 weeks pero... ewan. nakaka-frustrate lang kasi. ginagawa ko nalang, mag-do-double peds ako ng mabilis kapag nababadtrip na ko just to let off some steam. haha.

any advice?

and... how do you guys deal with frustration when it kicks in with regards to drumming?

pero lahat talaga dumadaan jan...it's part of the cycle that we go through.

how do ideal with it? i try to stay more focus sa ginagawa ko...dahil ako din ang magbi-benefit sa mangyayari...

When it gets to the point I always gets to the point I'm always frustrated I give it 1 or 2 days off... just to cool myself down and listen to as much music as possible where I can hear what I'm trying to learn... as of now my optimistic approach in learning techniques in drumming has helped a lot, I just keep on trying to learn them no matter how long it takes. Nothing can be achieved overnight right? I remember it took me 1 month to learn the whole piece of Rosanna and I'm not saying I got it note for note but I'm happy I can do pretty much something that resembles the real piece. I just try to be patient and keep telling myself "if others can do it, I can!"

oo nga no, i also listen to alot of music whenever i'm not drumming, sayang lang nasira yung zen vision: m ko and i'm trying to get it repaired/replaced so no music on the go for me at the moment.

ayos to, salamat sa mga replies. siguro ma-aapply ko tong mga to. just goes to show you that different people have different ways of "getting over that hump". :D
