What can you say about the new Silverchair?
« on: August 11, 2007, 07:39:41 PM »
from The 40-Year Old Virgin - How do I know you're gay?  You listen to Coldplay....

"Straight Lines" sounds like Metrosexual Rock to me.   Not the angry kids I used to hear 12 years ago...

huh? wth is so metrosexual about the new silverchair?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrosexual

...they've grown musically folks... i don't recall seeing daniel wearing an armani suit once in the video...

if you still want to hear them play dropped-d tunes while sporting flannel shirts and ripped jeans, break out your old frogstomp cd. this is a more mature (non-metrosexual) silverchair... try to get over the fact thay they sport beards now, the new album still rocks.

I have no qualms about the music.  It was brilliantly produced.  It just surprises me that these kids that used to look like Nirvana and sound like Pearl Jam are nowhere near how they sound now.

i totally agree with you on how much they have departed from their original sound... i also agree that their look has changed, but their new look is definitely not metrosexual nor the sound. ....besides, who here still wears the same thing now when they were 15years old anyway? :) gosh i miss my grunge days. hehe.

The bottomline is Silverchair is still Silverchair... If you are going to compare the old albums (Frogstomp, Freakshow, Neon Ballroom)  to the latter ones (Diorama, and the latest) its really different they have matured musically but the lyrics is still excellent.. If you dig the new sound of Silverchair better look for The Dissociatives album. Its also an excellent album.

Hey guys! Silverchair is actually favorite band, been a follower since Frogstomp. I disagree about the "Metrosexual" term, its definitely a wrong word to describe the band.

I love the new stuff, as well as the old stuff. But I gotta say Diorama is still my favorite album, and I find that album to be highly underrated since they weren't able to promote it properly because of Daniel's reactive arthritis a few years back. I gotta admit though, I've been playing Young Modern to my ears since I got a copy of the album back in April.

If you've been a real follower of the band you'd actually appreciate them even more, being dynamic and always stepping up their music to a whole new level. I believe that they should be a good influence to bands who want to continue growing musically.

Anyway, nice to see some discussions about the band here. Grab a copy of Young Modern and see how diverse the album is!

Hey, I'm also hoping to know more fans around here!

IMHO, they sound a hell lot like incubus nowadays. including the posteuring and all. but nonetheless, to me they're still the second best band to come from the land under(next to the living end, of course).

and i agree with dissociative, there's nothing wrong with their new sound and labeling it as something like "metrosexual" is such a capital sin. why can't people accept the fact that some bands don't want to rehash the same old sound they had? why can't they accept the fact that Silverchair doesn't want to be boring? pray tell.

no silverchair album is alike IMHO.  when they used orchestral arrangements in their neon ballroom album, the band was showing signs that they were looking to deviate from their old sound, and with diorama, which is a complete departure from their grunge roots, the boys have indeed grown up. daniel johns did a lot of experimentation during their break as a band while he is recovering from his RA.  the reason maybe for their entirely different sound in the young modern album is the addition of their "fourth" member, electronica artist/keyboardist paul mac who, according to johns, is his musical soulmate. i am not a big fan of their young modern album as much as i used to be with their first three albums, but i have all the respect in the world for this band whose music had grown up like their audiences. peace!

i think they took a big risk while doing Young Modern Station. Pero yun naman ang point nun diba, specially when you've been categorized into a genre and you're well-known for it, nakakasawa pag andun ka lang forever diba. These boys have been playing since they were in highschool, and we can't blame them for experimenting. I think it's brilliant that they have incorporated different styles to their music. Hindi na pare parehong effects ang ginagamit, iba na yung structure nung songs.

Keyword is to innovate one's self. I think they pulled it off. Other bands have done the same thing, why criticize them for doing the same?

That kid Daniel Johns has Natalie Imbruglia for a wife. Damn lucky guy.

Now, I'm curious. I haven't listened to any of their stuff since Freakshow.

very well said!

i believe silverchair found their 'own' music on the diorama album.
songs that when u hear, u know that's silverchair, not another grunge band

still has some of that grunge, heavy, alternative spices but that's who they are.

I'm disappointed.

I prefer the aggression of Frogstomp.  :-D

Freakshow and Neon Ballroom are still ok for me.

But their music/image in the new video plainly S U C K E D!

Sorry for being closed-minded to changes!  :-D
