Ask ko lang bakit ba nilalagyan ng tape yung tinatamaan ng beater sa bass? Ayoko kasi nun kasi nagkakadumi yung beater ko eh.

In general, some drummers put bass drum impact pads on their bass drum heads in order to prolong the durability of their kick batter.  It can also add an extra punch on the bass drum sound.

Instead of buying those commercially-available bass drum impact pads, some drummers improvise with household products like tissue, thin piece of foam, etc...  I even heard of a drummer who uses feminine napkins for this purpose!  They tape those things on their kick batters.

Worried about getting those beaters dirty?  It's just a matter of mounting those pads cleanly, and making sure that the kick batter itself is clean.

Going back to the topic...

I prefer Evans drumheads.  Their drumheads are more consistent and I find them having better tone and much easier to tune.  Eversince the D'Addario Company acquired Evans, the latter's product quality has greatly improved.  And with Evans, I'm able to achieve the quality drum sounds that I prefer.

Remo also makes excellent drumheads, but Evans is my number one choice.  Evans heads may be a little more expensive than Remo heads, but it's worth it.

My current snare drum set-up:

On my 5.5x14" Tama Starclassic Maple:
batter = Evans Genera Dry coated
resonant = Evans Snare Side Glass 500 clear

On my 5x13" Tama Artwood Maple:
batter = Evans G1 coated
resonant = Evans Snare Side Hazy 300 clear

hi, just wondering.. does the type of wood affect the kind of heads you should buy? for example if the wood is maple, should you buy a specific type of head?

Good question!

There are numerous factors involved, so I guess we can't really generalize it.  Not all drums are the same...  For example, there are plenty of brands and models of maple drums available worldwide.  Assuming that we have all of these maple drum models of the same size, they would still sound different from each other.

One maple drum may have a thicker shell, or a shell with more plies, or with different ply thicknesses, or with a different bearing edge, or with suspension mounts, or with different design lugs and hoops, different construction method, etc. etc. and so forth... Gets?  :D

But what we can do is we can become aware of the sound qualities produced by different woods.  Here's some useful wood info from The Drum Tuning Bible...

http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/id14.html

Now that we are familiar with the certain sound qualities produced by certain woods, we can familiarize ourselves with different brands and models of drumheads, and the different sounds that they can produce.

Experimentation, patience, a little research, and a good pair of ears are keys.  I hope these personal opinions of mine are helpful.

Warm - more organic-sounding; fat, meaty, dense, having good low-end.

Bright - more brilliant-sounding; more high-end; usually has more projection for live situations.

Source: Evans Drumheads Website (Sound Spectrum Chart)

The Remo Ambassador is an industry-standard one-ply drumhead for general use.  Its Evans counterpart... the G1 model.

Remo Controlled Sound (CS) drumheads feature a dot in the middle; an extra ply mounted either above or below the drumhead in order to add durability and contribute to a more controlled drum sound.  Its Evans counterpart... the Power Center models.

i'd stay away from the evan heads sold here.  I bought a set, even had it replaced.  The coating of the reverse dot is sticky and wouldn't last 2 weeks.  Dumidikit sa sticks, messes your set.  Heto patunay:

The G2 heads sound quite nice tho.  I also tested remo ambassador and its sounds sweet, pero nasa sayo na din kung anong tunog ang habol mo. kung gusto mo pang rakrakan, pinstripe para punchy ang tunog with minimal resonance.

share ko lang po since this thread is about drumheads..

for me, evans is more durable... yung 16 inch floor tom ng drumset ng school ensemble ko is using Evans Genera G2.. 2 ply.. going around 4 years nah! on its 2nd year from being the drumhead on the floor tom, nagpalit kame ng batter head ng 12 inch tom nmen.. ayun, ngayon, bumigay na.. nagkapunit na sa mei bearing for about an inch.. laging nwawala sa tune.. hav to tune it nanaman mmya sa B flat thou..

sa remo nman po mga sir, is Fyberskyn 3 still available? maganda ren naman yung head na to.. kahit wala kang reso head.. One ply ata to na makapal..

cheers!!!

I bought a 10" coated amb long time ago. Kanina ko lang pinalitan ang reso head, so its G2 clear over coated amb.  Ibang iba ang tunog nya ngayon. Mas-buo sya compared sa stock grestch head.  Nabawasan ang plastic sound nya and its warmer.  So, hindi pala overrated mga nababasa ko na malaki ang influence ng reso head sa sound.
