Gig Photographers

Hello, I don't know if this topic has already been discussed here but are there any gig photographers here who actually get paid? How much do you guys get? Curious lang.

All I get is free entrance and sometimes credit on the musician's pages. Swerte na pag libre beer.

I've been shooting some productions for a while now and lately I felt like some prods are taking me for granted na. Yung tipong iinvite ka kasi masaya daw yung night pero the bands are actually crappy, and then the next day everybody demands for your photos. (Grrrr!) I feel used sometimes. Di bale sana kung petiks lang yung pagkuha ko saka paid ako for my time and equipment depreciation... but no. 

So I'm thinking of charging some shoots, and I'm wondering of the on-going rates (if there are any). Help? Anyone?

underground gig scene? NAH.

however, it's a case to case basis. in our case, when a friend brings an DSLR or an HD cam for us, we treat them out to either food or coffee, with friendship on the side.

i've never heard of a freelance photographer getting paid in the underground gig scene (unless outsourced by companies of course). otherwise i'd take my camera and do that WHILE gigging.

why don't you go the fashion slash model route? there's more money in there, i'm sure.

of course my friends treat me the same way. they don't even have to pay or feed me when i take their photos,.. but it's a different story when a "stranger" invites me to his prod and he expects to get professional service in exchange for free entrance to a gig im not really interested in. i take photos for the whole night and this stranger abuses the favor. then in the end they wouldn't even link back the photos to the photographer. it's just sad when you do it for free..that's why i was wishing there were rates for people like that so i wouldn't feel taken for granted.

why don't you go the fashion slash model route? there's more money in there, i'm sure.

possible naman humingi ng starting fee. let's say, php500 minimum mo for 1 night (mababa pa nga e, dipende sa shots mo pero ang pasok talaga ay parang 1k-2k per night/gig)

magusap kayo ng prod. pakitaan mo ng samples. tapos ganito, yung mga banda mismo, for example may 10 bands dun sa prod. yung prod ngayon pwedeng mag-charge ng php100 sa banda (para makabawi sa 1k TF mo ) kung gusto nilang magkaroon ng copies ng mga pics nila. (of course, kung kami yung banda, apat kami sa isang banda, okay lang naman sakin ang 25 pesos para makakuha ng shots na matitino sa banda ko) in that way, hindi malulugi ang prod sa paghire sayo at maipo-promote pa nila ang prod nila while you get your tf in a decent and fair way. 

lakas ng loob at confidence lang yan saw your shots @ your multiply. magaganda kaya shots mo btw, anong camera gamit mo?

Uy kuya salamat po sa tip!  Mukhang effective strategy mo hehe sige masubukan nga. 1k seems fair enough for a starting fee. Wish me luck when I talk to the prods.

oooh. ako kasi if i will be doing photography for a living di ako uubra sa ganun

kung freelance concert/gig photographer ka, medyo mahirap kumita. mas ok if you tie-up with a magazine or a multimedia-ad company and i-reto mo yung sarili mo to be their photographer.
i know someone who's tied-up (and actually works) with MTV and takes gig photos for them. though his photos are not that good (sorry), he's the grand-spanking official photog for MTV events.
