What's your favorite tone?
« on: August 25, 2008, 02:56:40 AM »
Not sure if I should post this here - maganda sana if all genres can post.

Anyway, what's your top 3 favorite tone? Here's mine:

1.) The tenor saxophone. It's very sexy, and yet not too slutty.
2.) The upright bass. I find it... mysterious.
3.) Of course - the hollow-body guitar. It's fat, yet it moves fast.

I can't play the first two, and the only guitars I have now are 2 acoustic guitars, steel and nylon. My semi-hollow is sick.  :-(What a life...

for guitars.

jazz......flatwound strings na mataba, hollowbody or even just a semi.

blues...srv's strat tone, neck pickup, mataba na strings, tuned down Eb(it really sounds better at Eb)

les paul, 335 or an sg through a marshall....tunog ni clapton with cream

tunog ni robben ford/larry carlton, which he can practically do with any guitar/amp with variations on tone...personified by using 335 style guitar combined with fender twin amp...or the elusive dumble overdrive special(?)

hhhmmm

acoustic piano....bugudoy tone

sax...d ako masyado familiar sa iba...but i like david sanborn

fusion lead type....russ freeman and lee ritenour
guitarist telling the drummer what the intro to laklak was. caught on video.at binilangan pa ang drummer 1-2...1-2-3..lol

Nowadays trip ko ang synthesizers, of course it can sound cheesy in the wrong hands but  zawinul, kinsey, brecker(sax synth), metheny(guitar synth) and the likes did a lot of innovative stuffs without sounding like a computer.

Guitar tone?

Ditto, west coast jazz.
I also like the tone of Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax at ang pinaka paborito ko, Ben Webster (Tenor sax)

George Benson & Wes naman sa guitars.

1. Guitar single coils driven through a tube amp - "molten" leads ala Santana
2. Guitar with MOSFET-based distortion and light delay - ala-SAXOPHONE
3. Fretless bass "mwaaaaah"
4. Boosted bass played ala slap/pop/tap - FUNKehhh
5. Shamisen "twaaanng"
6. Gibson ES335 "lush-organic"
BLAH

anything about music that doesn't sound redundant...

try listening to Mick Taylor's "Slow Blues"....for one...

Eric Johnson's "East Wes"

I like every sax sound there is...it's almost the same as a guitar tone without the attack.

The Santana sound of old was nicer when he used a Gibson SG as in "Treat" which is a jazzy Latin instrumental.

But doing nothing IS!

I prefer a more organic tone and dislike yung mga tone na wala ng dynamic response na marinig, parang nakikinig lang ako ng background sound ng super mario sa familycomputer eh. :-D

Sample players na organic yung tones (for me):
John Scofield, George Benson, Joe Pass Michael Brecker, Scott Henderson, SRV, all the great blues guys, Stan Getz and the likes.

Tama ba yung term na organic? anyway, you all get the idea. :-D
