Title: retro gear - Yamaha PCI soundcards circa 1998
Post by: 3650guy on February 03, 2012, 08:27:34 PM
The DSP factory and SW1000XG were high end soundcards at the end of the 1990's and they were launched with great fanfare and hype for the MAC and Win 95 platform. The DSP music factory (DS2416) and the SW1000XG had great specs at the time (48khz 24bit max) and just as suddenly Yamaha pulled the plug and discontinued it just before winxp was launched but thankfully they managed to squeeze in a winxp asio driver.

So what is this all about? I just got a SW1000XG  from TPC for 1k in mint condition! minus the mini midi cable and the connector to a DSP factory card.  what has it going for it? well it is a recording soundcard, it has built in effects (70 variations) and a full blown XG synth in the form of the guts of a MU100R hardware module. although this is XG/GM territory remarkably the sounds still hold up when I play a couple of midifiles. Of course I had a difficult time installing it and I expected installation and driver hassles, it is still worth it. considering this card cost more than 15k php back in 1999. So what, I cant install the bundled XG gold software there are still other ways to access the patches and navigate around it.  For now I am very happy listening to near realistic midi emulations of "Welcome to Jurassic Park" - using 3 ports (take note three actual midi ports for complex sequencing and playback) and "Satch Boogie".  And the best part is that I can trigger the sound card with a usb midi controller and get an instant response without fiddling around with Asio latency.  Other Pluses on this card are a SPDIF coax out and recording MIDI to AUDIO via loopback recording.

i've been dreaming of acquiring that card before..  all i can afford was the Yamaha WaveForce 192XG to play midifiles in XG/GM.

have you tried installing the card in win7 environment? how was it?

 :)

I havent tried it yet. based on some forums and user groups, reactions are varied. some have it working and some have problems in getting it installed even in xp compatibility mode.

I got the DSP factory complete with the AX44 I/O and it really is a magnificent card. Only problem is that it doesn't have drivers for Win7-x64 so you're stuck with XP and 32-bit operation. I've used it in conjunction with my Emu mostly using the twin REV5 fx processors via spdif, but I really wish they made this card with ADAT so I can fully use it as an 'outboard' processor.

Another problem with the DSP factory is that it doesn't come with its own software. Luckily there are a couple of freeware control panel software though they lack intuitive GUI interfaces. Used in conjunction with the SW1000, it makes for a killer (though outdated) production suite.

the SW1000XG is practically the MU80 sound module. used with the DSP2416, it is a great combi but limited to winXP. I hope you get both working. i'm thinking of letting go of my DSP2416 because it doesn't work in win7 :(

I have 2 dsp2416 with bays the other set is still unused. eto yata reason bakit di na ako umalis ng winxp. kasi kung may sonar 4 ka install mo lang yung plugin, so thru sonar doon ka magseset ng mixer mo and then you can use another program for recording, sabay sila. up to now mahal ko pa rin tong card na to :-\
