Help with regards to frets!!
« on: February 18, 2013, 12:37:46 PM »
Magandang tanghali bayan! Hahaha. Kung maari lamang magtanong:

I have 2 other electric guitars kasi na currently I'm not using. They both sound great naman for me, pero I'm hesitating whether I should spend money to have these guitars fret leveled/refretted kasi they both have fret dents na.

Ito ang aking dalawang katanungan :)

1.) Gaano bang kalala ang malalang fret wear?
2.) Does fret wear affect the intonation of the guitar, and if so, how much does it affect the intonation?

I have read forums na din, pero it would be better if you also post your opinions here! Salamat at magandang araw! :)

Just enough para magcause ng unwanted fretbuzz and dead notes on different areas ng fretboard at kung sobrang baba na talaga.

Not so much, I guess. Fret buzz lang talaga kalaban.

Thing is, when the fretwire gets worn, uneven yan.

Whereas on a uniformly leveled fretwire, pwede mo ibaba yung action to a better playability na walang sabit. Now, this is where intonation gets affected. Pag sobrang taas ng action mo dahil sa pagcompensate sa mga worn fretwires, doon na mag-iiba ang intonation. Yes, it is noticeable pag sintunado.

As for fret level versus refret, depende sa extent ng wear nung worn areas. Pag hindi naman super lalim pero may sabit (fretbuzz) na on certain areas, baka kayang habulin ng level. Pero do note na bababa considerably yung height ng lahat ng fretwires kasi hahabulin yung may pinaka malalim na worn area.

Pag sobrang grabe na ng wear, best is to have it refretted.

1. Malala na ang fretwork If the string is buzzing against the fret wire and only if this is audible sa amp, Owise okay pa yan. Try mo muna I set up ang neck relief at intonation, if you are still uncomfortable bring it to a well experienced luthier. Mas maganda ang gtara kapag pantay at kumikinang ang fret wires.
2.  It will not affect intonation, bridge adjustment affects intonation, i.e. in my opinion Lang.\m/

Thank you, Sir r_chino18!

I'm not much of a shredder din kasi, like what you said, where I play most of the time is where fret wears will appear - which is the first four frets lang and hindi naman din pa gaanong lubog talaga. And I only play guitar for let's say not more than 8 hours a week, sa tingin ko nga sulit na ding buhayin ko ulit itong aking dalawang alaga. Maraming salamat ulit kaibigan!  :)
