RESONANT SIDE Drumheads thread
« on: February 14, 2007, 09:50:32 PM »
PEACE.

Thank you sir. Me natutuhan na naman ako.
How about yung mga ibang toms at bass drum, kung minsan walang resonant head, for music style or genre kaya yon?

toms na walang resonant head tends to be more wet-sounding and walang resonance or hindi "nagbobounce" yung tunog sa loob ng drum.
bass drums without resonant naman, ganun din. wala masyadong boom puro tag or tug lang.

sorry medyo di ko madescribe mabuti yung sound qualities pero i think more or less you get the sound naman.

:-D

From the Drum Tuning Bible website (http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/), under Tuning and Seating.

Resonant Head:

Often underestimated for its contribution to the tone, it is mostly responsible for the pitch, lingering tone and pitch of that created as a result of striking the batter head and resonance of the shell. The resonant head produces “resonance” and aids in sustain, it has a major effect in the overtones and enhances the timbre of the drum. Generally you do not use anything other than single ply on the bottom, but there are exceptions.

try mo ung clear na remo pinstripe(2 ply to ha) or ung mga remo ambassadors
To get your playing more forceful, hit the drums harder.

oo, ung bottom head. We have the same understanding and you were outright corect with your exmple. Snare nga ang best example dun.

Any way, alam ko resonant head sya kasi its function is to resonate the sound vibrations brought about by the batter head. therefore mas mag reresonate sya kung mas manipis sya, since, ung force nung strike ng stick ay nasa batter. Nevertheless, please correct me if im wrong.

Also, may nkatry n ba na equal ang heads top and bottom? How bout thicker bottom?

i have and still do.

i use remo clear pinstripes for batter and remo clear emperor batter for the bottom. although unconventional, i learned this combo from session drummers here in uk, its to equalise the tone, eliminates unwanted overtones or rings straightaway, and junk the need for any sort of muffling aid (moongel, masking tapes, and the like). basically for studio recording applications (my drums are miced so this works for me coz with it i can achieve cleaner amplified tom sounds--good for me but not for my neighbours). but finding the perfect sound ballance is tricky and tedious so to speak. so it is advisable to be patient and spend a considerable amount of time to tune the toms right coz if the resonants are too loose (even slightly loose), one will notice a huge difference in sound, a dull boxy or even dead sound that is.

Um, that is a good Idea. Only that it will cost me more money, which I dont have enough.

Now, for the next problem is to sort out the sound difference, as mentioned before, Im a bit or totally tone deaf. Which leads me to think of a new thread to post....

thanks guys!
im screaming, im shouting...
