Long before Mother Earth became a buzzword for the environment, some college students got together to form the band Mother Earth. Then considered amateurs, musicians Louie Ocampo followed by Willie Rebaņo and Larry Martinez (keyboards), Joey Puyat and Gabe Ascalon on drums, Sam Sen then Colby de la Calzada on bass, Harry Tambuatco on drums, Uly Avante on percussion and a succession of vocalists from Cherry Mapua, Maris Macaraig, Anita Ceidran, and Cynthia Patag.
Mother Earth made its mark by being one of the first bands to play original music as well as that of Chick Corea, Weather Report and other pioneering jazz fusion artists. Winners of the 1975 Battle of Bands contest, they took home First Place in 'Best Original Arrangement" for TREES and tied for First Place with the Band Destiny for 'Best Band'. Not all the members of Mother Earth continued to make music their profession, but this did not diminish their passion for playing music.
This weekend Colby de Ia Caizada, Harry Tambuatco. Joey Puyat and Uly Avante, together with Michael Guevarra (sax) and Butch Saulog (piano) are getting together as Mother Earth to perform some of the songs long forgotten but still well loved by most jazz fusion fans. Special Guest is Ms. Jacqui Magno. Saturday, November 25 at Harris Alabang (Other performances to be announced)
