Playing with "Clicks"
« on: August 25, 2014, 03:33:26 PM »
We just got a new drummer..and noticed he plays with a in ear metronome..

Its a whole new experience for me as Im just used to just rocking the heck out of gigs..

at first..it was uncomfortable...but little by little I get to appreciate this method...especially when listening to the recorder track..the song structure and the beat are very controlled and precise..which is nice to listen...

I remember duringthe rig rundown of  Brian May his tech was saying..he really has to watch his switching as they dont play using those in ear guides..and its just what rock and roll is..

YORTOTS?

I saw this Vic Firth feature (ata) once, di ko kilala yung drummer, but he plays with a click track. Pop band ata yung tinutugtugan nya nun. IEM feed pati yung audio, so rinig mo talaga na yung drumming nya sinasabay sa click. As a result sobrang tight nung performance nung band.

I guess it's good for a couple of things. First, I think it will work well with pop tunes. Pop tunes can only sound better the tighter and more record-like it goes. Super helpful din kung may time-based effects tulad ng delay, para hindi bigla mawawala yung delay effect or yung drummer; or kung may samples/tracks involved, a la UDD.

For rock, personally, di na kailangan ng click, for practice lang. A too-sterile timing really sucks to listen to live, and honestly I tried that before, the timing goes out the window and i just shut it off  Nakaka-steal ng feel pag live kasi yung isip mo partly naktuon sa click kaysa sa bandmates.

I remember the early live records of Dave Matthews Band, sobrang sabog yung timing ni Carter Beauford sa live. So practice and performances with clicks isn't always a bad thing  :)

if you play in a rock band live and you use clicks mawawala yung vibe ng music even in recording uubos yun ng oras makuha lang right tempo
dude, there is a difference between having fun and just being a troll.

For me as a drummer inaalam ko Kung Anu gusto ng papaluan ko.
Tignan mo si portnoy,he could be technical as he want with click pero sa winery dogs
Kalat na kalat ang tempo.  Rock n roll it's more of a feel song rather than precise.
Pop and rnb songs are sometimes played over a loop or a sample so you have
To stick with a click.

You'd have to be super trained with a click to improvise with a click, kasi mataas talaga ang chance na maligaw ka. Tony Royster Jr. level of skill ang kailangan mo nun.

Re: UDD, I saw them play in Ayala Museum, may one or two bars sya na na-miss, nagfflam yung snare nya so ibig sabihin hindi sumabay dun sa sequencer nya yung palo nya. But you gotta hand it to the guy, ang hirap ng ginagawa nya!

It's up to the drummer (or the band) if he can still play with feel kahit naka-clicks. Ang feel naman can be communicated more than subtle shifts in time, like dynamics, arrangement, or how the other band members bend around the beat that is set by the drummer.

+1 especially for straight ahead rock. di sya maririnig as it is, pero mafifeel mo mas solid talaga.

Suggest ko to record your rehearsals, audio and/or video. There's nothing like taking an audience/listener point-of-view to reveal your flaws as a performer/musician.
