If it is getting "sikat", then blame the records companies and not the parents of the "rich" musicians.

The better known bands are better known because of marketing plain and simple. It isn't about skill either. If that were the case, then music teachers should be more famous than their students.

When a record company will see $$ signs from a band, they will sign up the latter and milk them dry. It's just business. Nothing illegal.

If there was any direct relation to popularity and rich parents, I think it would be in that the rich kids, like was what previously mentioned, have the time and resources to improve their skills, pay for a demo tape and can book a club for a gig. In the gig, they don't care if they get paid or not. Then they "pay" an A&R guy to watch them.

Buti na lang, this wasn't about why good looking bands without skill are more famous than others.

There was thuis famous Pinoy hard rock band in the 90s na naka alternat namin sa isang bar not many years ago.

They have all their fans with them. We played first of course before them. Because we know we are in for some challenges, naglabas kami ng mga production pieces namin like medleys, our TOP and Queen stuff. In fairness we did a great set.

Natawa kami kasi yung sikat na banda, puros dapa at subson ang metro. Hindi mo aakalain na may mga album na sila. The drummer tried so hard to imitate Mike Portnoy pero sablay pa rin.

When we got to pack our things, ang daming nagparinig sa amin na mga fans nung banda na yun:
1. Ay look at these losers, they pack their own equipment. Our band has PAs!
2. May Tower Of Power pa kayong nalalaman mga P!@#$% ^&a niyo.
3. So cheap the band no? They have no original material.

At nung matapos ang set nila they did not even bother to put back the amplifiers in the right places para sa amin. The drummer did not return the cymbals. So much for a band that has roadies eh?

Tama nga, maaring sikat sila, di naman sila nirerespeto ng mga real professional working musicians.

Parang sa pulitika yan e. Minsan kahit di nakatapos ng high school, binibigyan ng puwesto kasi may kapit sa loob e.

It's a sad fact na ganiyan na rin sa industriya natin.

dami ka pera madami ka pambili pang gastos pang gimik pan libre meron ka budget para maganda demo cd mo. pero never forget the poet always needs the pain. so poor musicians usually create much deeper songs than the rich dudes, pero i dont think it always follows

Are the Rivermaya and Bamboo blokes 'rich'? because the razorback and wolfgang guys are, socio-economicaly speaking, at least middle class. can't fault them for having crapy music!

Sana lang our country would be  more supportive towards the arts, giving eveyone an equal footing if they want to purse music. a stigma towards musicians exist eh, unless mayaman ka and the family can support you, your equipment, and your not-as-rich bandmates (kung meron). he he. jk!

semi OT: just because galing ateneo, it doesnt mean mayaman ka. at sisikat ka. i came from ateneo, my bandmates came from ateneo. hindi kami mayaman. at hindi rin kami sikat. at hindi lahat ng atenista mayaman. 

back to the topic: i guess its a matter of being in the right place at the right time. but money matters since not many producers are willing to shoulder the whole expense of the production.

Same here. Pero yung mga binanggit na halimbawa na mga Atenista dito e talagang malakas ang connections + mayaman, di tulad natin.

At sa tingin ko exception ang Eraserheads at iba pang mga 90's bands dito dahil band explosion talaga noon, naghahanap ang mga producer/manager ng mga talents talaga. Ngayon kasi baliktad na e, mga banda na ang naghahanap ng hahawak sa kanila. At malamang ang may pera panggawa ng demo at may mga koneksyon para sa referrals ang may advantage.

Malaking factor ang timing, PERO pag wala ka pa ring resources, wala ring opportunity para ma-tap ang tamang panahon na yun.

At huwag natin pag-usapan dito ang idealistic mantra ng "sikat para sa ibang mga musikero" dahil ang context ng "sikat" sa topic na ito ay nakabase sa buong music industry, kaya pera talaga ang umiikot dito.

I wont name names pero ill hide them sa name na Juan and Pedro. BTW this is based sa true story ha.

Juan is very interested sa tunog ng band na kakilala ko. Juan is an Eexecutive Producer sa isang TV Station and a Managing Director ng isang Production House. He then asked me kung may demo cd and profile yung grupo. binigay ko naman kasi para matulungan ko din naman kahit papano yung banda. Balak ni Juan imanage yung grupo dahil sabi nya sobrang may potential. Inilapit ngayon ni Juan kay Pedro yung grupo. Si Pedro naman ay isa sa Mataas na namamahala ng M _ b _ _ _ L_ _ e (fill in the blanks na lang). Sabi ni Pedro nung narinig nya yung demo... "kayang kayang pasikatin yan ng isang buwan lang at sila na ang number 1 sa chart". tanong naman ni Juan kung ano ang gagawin. Sabi ni Pedro "Kailangan ng pera... para sa mga payola sa mga radio stations para sila lagi ang pinapatugtog " "May pera ba yang banda na yan para mag invest ng kasikatan nila?"

Its not really the money that make the artists famous. Its more of the connections.

Come to think of it... 1 lang yung rock radio station sa Pilipinas and kayang kaya nila i-manipulate yung "Pinoy Rock Scene". And yung mga local bands na pinapatugtog nila dun sa station na yun mga friendly friends with each other... hmmm.... is there a "connection"?!?!?!
