Big Kit or Small Kit
« on: August 31, 2016, 01:41:34 AM »
For long time drummers who grow old drumming, which do you prefer nowadays after years and years of drumming?

I've been playing the drums since year 1999, I also experienced both monster and 4pcs kits. Either are fun to play.

But I noticed as I age, I want a simpler kit. So I bought a Ludwig Breakbeats last year. I'm torn wether or not to sell my 6pcs Gretsch Catalina Maple or just keep it.

I also think that the simpler the kit, the better. I'm not saying that playing a small kit means you're more talented, less talented, better, or worse than someone who plays a larger kit. It's just that for me, I think (now that I'm almost 30-ish), smaller kit has less distraction than larger ones. We can focus on one lick, fills, groove, skill, in million different ways with it. Yes, we can apply this with the big ones (with lots of options and freedom) as well. But I think downsizing to a lesser piece bring out the best in our creative mind/skill by making the most out of a small kit. Then what more if we apply it to the big ones?

Hmmm.. Your thoughts? Prefered kit?

Disclaimer: I'm not starting a debate between playing big or small kit. It's just that I want to know if you guys also feel the same like I do as we grow old. Going to a simpler kit. Or is it just me?

Largest kit my drumming talent can accommodate is 4 toms, 1 bass drum (my double bass technique sucks), 1 snare (I don't know what the hell to do with an aux snare), 1 hi hat ( I don't know what the hell to do with an aux hat), 2 crashes, a ride, and maybe a china (yeah I don't know what the hell to do with a splash either, hahaha). I don't know what the hell to do with 8 inch or smaller toms. I may play 20 inch toms, but maybe not often.

When I got older (because I got better at control) I learned to play quiet gigs with a kick+snare+hat+ride setup, and then later a kick+snare+ride setup, and later a kick+snare+brush setup (no cymbals) and snare+brush only setup. All of which sounds better than a kahon, if you ask me.

haha I feel you bro.
Nakakatuwa may monster kit pero its just more of reality sinking in na pag nag gig ka kasi simple setup lang
ang magagamit mo. For me 2 racks and floor sa bahay pero given a chance na smaller kit i would.
and bigger kits are harder to clean. (the matanda speaking) :-D :-D

used to have a 3 rack tom (10/12/13), 2 Floor Tom (14/16) 2 snare (13 Piccolo/14 regular), 20 Bass Drum setup, coupled with 14 Hats, 16/18/20 Crashes, 21 Ride, 18 China, 6/8/10 Splashes and a 12 China Splash

that was during college, panay practice lang sa bahay hahaha tapos napansin ko, pag gig, naiilang akong pumalo kasi nagdecrease ang setup to a 4 piece (2 tom, snare + bass) I downsized my setup as well.

LOL at the "matanda speaking". Hahahaha!

Maganda monster kit talaga.

Hahaha! Oo nga, para sa mga Like-A-Tito-Drummers like me parang mas preferred na yung Monster Kit nasa cabinet na lang at small kit na lang naka setup.

Tsaka oo cute sila tignan pag naka setup. Parang ang neat tignan, ang sarap upuan.

One thing I noticed, mas focused ang learning sa grooves and time keeping pag small setup eh (which is a good thing, kesa puro chops di naman maka-poste). Ika nga, "Less is More". Sarap tuloy mag drums ngayon!

At home I have a 22"double kick set up with a 12" rack and 16" floor along with cheap entry level cymbals since it's only for practice. On gigs that require bringing a kit I just grab my 16" floor tom and convert it to a kick drum then add 10" rack and 13" floor tom then I use my better sounding cymbals. Worked for me the last 5 years. On that note I agree "Jungle" kits can deliver great results as much as a regular sized kit and they do make you look cool too.  8-)

Pero, 4 piece pa din ako. planning a Project 4 piece kit this christmas habang may kuwarta pa  :-D
