It was Noel Mendez who got me into Jazz. He told me to listen to Carlton.

When I met Aya, he told me to check out Martino and Benson. So I bought the album of Benson with "The Greatest Love of all" song. Later, I told Aya it was a pop album, then he told me to get the "Witchcraft Album". And I did..... never looked back.

One day, I asked Aya "What made Benson sound Jazz? Was it his dorian/ rnb double stops? Or was it his Backdoor II-V-I substitution?" ... he slowly turned and said... "It's the Bigote".

Haha, that is so Aya.  :-D

Try watching the Absolutely Live ni Benson, grabe ang Danny Boy niya dun. Danny Boy ba yun? Yung Irish Standard niya? Hehe, galing, thumb picking all the way, monstrous.

From the head down to the tail and then a hard climb upwards...

I think I was reading an article about John Petrucci, sighting his influences which included almost all Al's and Steve's (Holdsworth, Di Meola, SRV, Morse, etc.). From that point on I've been trying to reach down to his influences (wanting to understand how he came about). Al Di Meola, Chick Corea, Miles, and it gets crazier, and then realizing that much of them are residing in the jazz region or often within it. And then looking past behind my own influences, seeking their roots, they have jazz in them as well.

Wanting to enrich my own playing, I turned to it(starting). Jazz is an ever growing tree to pick from and let it grow in me or let my self grow within it, I'll find out which one in time  :-)

Mawalang galang na po ngunit...

I think you meant "citing" not "sighting".  :-)

You have no business playing jazz if you can't play the blues! :x :-P  (no offence, music friends tyo lahat d2)

As far as I know, all musical style were based on the blues. Pop, rock, funk, country, jazz and the likes (except classical). I hope I'm not mistaken.

basically JohnBoy has jazz lodged into his DNA. Yung Dad niya is a musician and jazz fanatic..not to mention, he belongs to a family of musicians.

Very supportive ang Dad niya sa pagiging musician niya, and that's rare I think. :-D

Very Cool Dad you got there bro!!
