3rd party lens. Your thoughts.
« on: November 14, 2012, 04:25:11 PM »
I've always wanted to be loyal to Nikon. As much as possible I want to avoid buying 3rd party lenses and accessories. I was told in a workshop I attended to avoid 3rd party lenses. But Nikkor lenses are just too darn expensive. I recently applied in a company specializing in weddings that are Nikon users and they're asking me if I'm willing to buy an all-around zoom f2.8 lens. Since I'm a DX user, they told me to get the Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8.

I was browsing Facebook a while ago and I came across dbgadgets. They're selling Tamron & Sigma 17-50mm f2.8's and it's a LOT CHEAPER than the Nikkor 17-55. I think it only costs around 18,500 for the Tamron. The Sigma almost the same price. Whereas the Nikkor costs around 57,000 bucks! I'm leaning towards the Tamron because i've been hearing a lot of negative stuff about Sigma. Has anybody tried using that Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC? I wanna get it coz it's cheaper but I'm afraid I might not get quality photos from that lens.

Anybody?

not necessarily. some are good while some are really a bust. but avoiding 3rd party lenses will drain your wallet and limit your potential and creativity as a photographer.

tamron 17-50 is a pretty decent lens. try the non VC one, it's much sharper than the one with VC.

My thoughts. In sharpness, your Nikkor 18-105 f3.5 screwed up my Sigma 70-200 2.8. SRSLY. I won't be trying any more Sigma in the future, but I MIGHT try a Tamron. Or really save up for old Nikkors.

Thanks. I'll try to look into that.

di naman porke brand na ng canon or nikon e the best na. sa camera siguro pero sa lens hindi lahat patok. like for example uwa's. i'd take tokina 11-16 2.8 anytime to nikkor 10-24 or 12-24. that tokina is really really good, abot kaya hindi katulad nung 2 nikkor, mahal na di pa fixed aperture. sulit and irerecommenda ko talaga yang lens na yan.

not all cases din ng 3rd party lenses e magaganda. gaya nung nabili kong sigma 24-70 2.8 ex dg macro. sobrang lugi. what i got was a bad copy ika nga. hindi sharp kahit na anong technique gawin ko. pangit pa kulay. pinacalibrate ko pa sa sigma makati. wala ganun din after. binenta ko na lang. since that i stayed away na sa sigma brand. ung 70-200 nila natest ko hindi din ako ganun kaimpressed compared sa counterpart na nikkor. malayo talaga.

There are only quite a few 3rd party lenses that can give level of IQ against the manufacturer lens. Also there are calibration issues that come with them which has to be corrected by the manufacturer.

Good thing there are a lot of review sites that you could check out which conduct objective testing of there lenses. You can already know how the lenses would perform and would help you decide whether or not the lens will suit you with regards to your expected IQ outputs and budget.

Tokina FTW and there's this another lens that begins with H------. I Dont remember but ive read a lot of reviews about it saying it is sharp. No problem with those 3rd parties perhaps but im definitely staying away from Sigmas.

had a Tokina 50 135mm f2.8 and a Sigma 30mm f1.4

Tokina was ok, Sigma had focusing issues... but if you have the money, buy Nikon. iba pa rin talaga.

why not open your options to vintage lenses? for USD100, you can get 3-4 lenses which, with the right technique, can give you the same results as Canon's / Nikkor's.

What kind of vintage lens would you recommend?

For starters...
Helios 44m-2 or 44m-7
Jupiter-9
SMC Takumar
Rokkor's
Zeiss (expensive)

the Tokina 11-16 is the only choice for Nikon DX users who wants an UWA. Haha!

Never tried a 3rd party on my end. Canon lenses kasi are not that expensive compared to nikon's. Anyways, each has its own edge naman, that's why online reviews are there to back you up before buying an equipment. its better din siguro if you have friend na merong third party lenses so you can have a feel of what it is maybe even better if your friend has the lens you're eyeing for. Just pray for a good copy nalang kasi kahit naman nikon or canon lenses minsan sumasablay rin talaga so you can never be so sure. but all in all it all depends on the composition and eye. sabi nga nung friend ko "your lens is a tool, no matter how expensive it is, if you don't know how to use it right, it's worth nothing."

Uy nice bro. Sana pwede kong ma-try yang lens mo. Phased out na ba yan?
