Has anyone heard of Alphonze Mouzon? I've seen him live here in london and woooooow the guy is possesed. he plays single bass pedal but he can make it sound like double bass like drummer guy from Fear Factory.

The Greatest Drummer for me is Dennis Chambers. His arms multiplies once he sat on his stool. The guy is a GOD!

Let's add Stewart Copeland to the list... 20 years after the last Police album (Synchronicity) his reggaeish rock drumming still inspires a lot of styles today!

Mitch Mitchell

seconded!

I almost forgot!

Mitch's playing is very technical, versatile, athletic, and powerful.  He can be loud and powerful as a train, and soft and light as a feather at the same time.  His adroit stickmanship, fast fills, and innovative rock rhythms are what really catches a listener's ear though. His rhythms were so ahead of his time its incredible. He is able to keep good time, but at the same time, his playing is filled with exciting and creative runs  placed in odd places. His playing is for the most part a lot more intelligent and tasteful.

All in all, he was a drummer who could start a pusating, swinging groove in any song or style, and even shine a bit on his own with some great drum solos.

His greatness can be witnessed in many of the songs he played on with Jimi Hendrix.

Man thanks for recognizing Ringo! ;)  Very few people appreciate what he's done for The Beatles. He allowed the space for the others to enrich. Being a drummer myself and having played a few Beatle tracks, I have to say I really have a tough time trying to get his style..I'm still trying.

He was able to play Latin (I Feel Fine) pop, rock, and various time signatures one after another (All You Need Is Love, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, etc.) which is difficult to do and do well. He has great elements of jazz and the time changing that he had to do with Beatles stuff is far removed from the boring 4 on the floor formatt that so many 'amazing' drummers champion themselves and show off with.

He had great expression without having to do the 'Thunder rolls". Not detracting from the other amazing drummers like Moony, Mitchell and Bonham.

He virtually invented (or perhaps more to the point brought to the fore) the open hi-hat technique that gave a solid wash of cymbals to the backing of a song.  Rocking!

He had a strong back beat (bass drum) that brought that aspect to the fore as well.

He inspired countless, countless people to take up drums, many of whom went on to fame themselves.

Songs of note: Rain (his favorite), A Day In The Life (the fills he did were absolutely perfect, and no one would have ever played them as musically as that), The End (Abbey Road), She Said She Said, and many more.  His inventive yet supportive style and laid back personality was perfect for the Beatles.  No other drummer could have added so much.

Technical ability is nothing without feeling, without empathy and understanding.  And maybe some love.  And he brought all that and more to the group.

The Beatles as a whole band had the art of writing and recording perfectly imperfect!
I think that will make sense to any Beatle lover who really does sleep with headphones on ;)

i agree on a lot of things you posted sir. he made drums swing in a rock and pop context. there are certain drum parts that are quit tough to play unless ayos kang mag-sangag ika nga ng mga pinoy drummers example is this song Act Naturally.
it's a nice a little up-tempo shuffle groove.

Wala akong masyadong kilalang drummer.  Drummer ng Slipknot.  Meron yung video niyang halos magdrums siyang patiwarik (concert.  yung stage mismoang umangat.  nakastrap siya sa upuan niya gamit 5-point harness na pang car-racing).  Subukan nyong i-Limewire.

well, in my experience just play the rosanna beat againts ah death metal/fusion drummer and most of the time they will shut up for good.

I guess kung pure virtuosity on drums, isa lang yan.

Buddy Rich.

Why? Kasi if you ask the top guns, Weckl, Donati, Bozzio,
anybody, even the one's who have stretched the boundaries of drumming to the limit.
Sabi din sa 25th anniversary ng Modern drummer, Buddy rich is the greatest drummer who ever lived as voted by the readers.

Meron akong dvd ni Virgil Donati, drum solo for Ring of Fire band, and yun drum solo nya sa Steve Vai in Astoria. When I first saw it i said , ultimate ito. It's unreal!
Pero i saw a Video of buddy rich doing a drum solo in the 70's, gamit nya yun maliit na four piece nya.
Parang impossible gawin. Then i tried watching the virgil solos again, and they seemed boring, biglang nawalan ng dating.

Vinnie Colaiuta.

This guy can do it all. He plays every style of music, great chops, great time, great groove and feel for music, etc.

Buddy Rich may have the fastest hands and one of the best techniques of all time, but I've never heard him play anything other than jazz-style (bebop, swing, etc.). Vinnie Colaiuta played everything, including heavy metal, prog rock (Frank Zappa), jazz, big band, etc.

Title: Who's the Greatest drummer in your opinion?
Post by: YJMCowboy on November 05, 2005, 02:12:29 AM
Well I'm pretty sure if you ask Vinnie he'd say Buddy....

I think Buddy chose not to play what "modern" drummers
are playing. I don't think he tried to learn to play  "modern" either.
Can't really blame him, his style is part of a certain era.
But IF, IF, IF he chose to, I think he would have been a monster
modern drummer as well, more so if he happened to be born in another era and had the same talent and drive he had.

Also depends on what your definition of greatest is.
If it's the greatest session drummer, Vinnie might
have a fight with Gadd, but Gadd kills him I believe.

My definition is sheer virtuosity. I've seen a long clip
of vinnie soloing, as an avid drum solo fan, I wasn't that
impressed really. I think Dave Weckl has a higher level of skill than Vinnie.

This is all debatable you know. It's just my opinion
as an avid drum fan.

Vinnie is part of that best list for sure but FAR from being the greatest,
I'm sure.
Title: Who's the Greatest drummer in your opinion?
Post by: bugoy_king on November 05, 2005, 08:44:57 AM
If you ask any drummer, they would say Buddy. Heck, ask any pro musician who the best is in his/her instrument and they would probably say Buddy. He was a real virtuoso in his own instrument, really mastered it like no other (I agree with you here).

I think it's Vinnie because he tried out every style out there, and to me that means a lot. Gadd was the pioneer and was also one of Vinnie's influences. However, I haven't seen Gadd do heavy metal (like Megadeth), nor do a lot of polyrhythms and odd time signatures.

With regard to Weckl, I would have to disagree with you. Weckl is really good, he's like a drum machine, however his solos are more technical rather than musical. Vinnie is really deep when it comes to solos, even including a lot of metric modulation in them.
Title: Who's the Greatest drummer in your opinion?
Post by: YJMCowboy on November 06, 2005, 12:47:27 AM
What you've said made perfect sense dude.
You're right.

Regarding Weckl, yes some people do consider him to be a
machine of sorts. I do however enjoy technicality a lot.
That's the only reason i placed him above Vinnie in my book.
It's his technical precision that attracts me as a listener.
As I said it's debatable. Actually Vinnie placed higher than Dave in that 25th nniversary MD issu. He was 9th and Dave was 13 or 14.
So more people might agree with your opinion.

For those reading ,Vinnie Actually was said to have played
the "Black Page", one of Frank Zappa's hardest pieces
with lots of difficult drumming, during his audition for frank,
used Bozzio's Double bass drum kit and passed the audition.

Vinnie's a GREAT drummer!

Peace dude.

(correct me rin if im wrong! ^_^)

si Gene Krupa nga ba nag improve ng use ng hi hats na i-elevate un to body level pra mkapag ostinato ka using it??? dati kasi daw, history ng hi-hats is foot level lng used as pang-"chick" lng.. (ooops! off topic!)

naka show down din ni Buddy rich si gene krupa eh... May nkita kc akong pic thru internet.. black and white pa(xmpre).. tatlo nga sila eh... ksama nila si Mel Torme.. (not so famous ata si Mel..)

2nd to me is Akira Jimbo!!! Grabeh!!! One man band with the use of triggering devices attached at different parts of his kit!!! hirap ng ginagawa niya...

Sa Pinoy drummers nman, si Mr. Haley Alarcon ng P.O.T.!!! galing mgdala ng groove!!! and for over-all si Mr. Jun Regalado and Mr. Koko Bermejo!!!

in an interview once with Matt Cameron who was then playing for some kind of Buddy Rich Memorial Benefit something...as much as he idolizes Buddy so much he couldn't appreciate a record Rich once did that touched on Rock...

Although he cites Rich as an influence, I'd still vote for Vinnie.  Actually, Vinnie's main influence is Tony Williams and Steve Gadd.

For local...

Si Koko Bermejo para sa akin.

Virgil Donati, (Ring of Fire/Stev Vai) his penhold style of drumming, kakabilib!!! (Try watching his drum solo on Steve Vai's live at the Astoria on DVD, the song was "Incantation".)

it's really hard to tell who really is the greatest among them, because drumming has no standards... one's play may change depending on its genre.
but we can consider stick control, speed, creativity, technicality and other stuffs...Solos may also change depending on ones' mood.
My favorites are Jojo Mayer and Steve Gadd.

There's a story that he was reading sheet music from Zappa in 21/16 time signature while playing with one hand because on the other hand was a pair of chopsticks. He was eating sushi while playing the piece!

Foreign:
John "Bonzo" Bonham: Amazing groove check out his shuffle on "Fool In The Rain" then he breaks into a songo in the middle. Groove!

Bernard Purdie: Check out Steely Dan's "Home At Last" and "Babylon Sisters" in the pocket, laid back shuffle grooves! Porcarro's "Rosanna" was a marriage of "Fool In The Rain" and the popular Purdie Shuffle

Steve Gadd: IMHO Gadd kicked both Vinnie's and Dave's asses during the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert when he kicked into his Angry March thing it was all over

Omar Hakim: Check out "Shinjuku Strut" the groove on the song just kills me everytime I hear it and he lets the song breathe with well placed spaces

Local:
Edmon "Bosyo" Fortuno & Pepe Smith: Need I say more?

But my personal number one favorite drummer of all time is Neil Peart.

I dig Danny Carey too! My favorite Carey drum performances are from the Lateralus album, though impressive din ang mga ibang albums nila.  Malalim ang concept nila.  Mahilig din sila sa 5,6 & 11 na time signatures.

Abe Laboriel Jr. is a successful session drummer.  He is currently playing and touring with Sir Paul McCartney.

I love his drumming on Vanessa Carlton's debut album Be Not Nobody (A Thousand Miles, Ordinary Day, etc.).

He is also the son of legendary bass player Abraham Laboriel, Sr.

CARTER BEAUFORD- For innovating a new language in drumming for Rock music.
DAVE WECKLE-For his Sensible and Dynamic use of cymbals.
DAVID GARIBALDI-Very Effective grooves. Tower of Power "Oakland Zone" album
THOMAS LANG-Technically robotic all-limb .....aaaaaahhh!! Can't find the right words to describe this "four-brained" monster drummer!
BILLY KILSON(?) of Dave Holland Quintet,"Prime Directive" album

CARTER BEAUFORD- For innovating a new language in drumming for Rock music.
DAVE WECKLE-For his Sensible and Dynamic use of cymbals.
DAVID GARIBALDI-Very Effective grooves. Tower of Power "Oakland Zone" album
THOMAS LANG-Technically robotic all-limb .....aaaaaahhh!! Can't find the right words to describe this "four-brained" monster drummer!
BILLY KILSON(?) of Dave Holland Quintet,"Prime Directive" album
....madadagdagan pa yan!
MIKE PORTNOY and VINNIE PAUL BABOY naman pang "astig metal"!

cnu si Vinnie Paul Baboy?

Si VINNIE PAUL ng dating Pantera na ngayo'y Damage Plan...sya lang kasi ang matabang drummer  na kilala ko nung payat pa ako eh,...ngayon magka- pugad na kami! he he he!

Kilala nyo ba si Scott Rockenfield?

Yup.  Drummer of prog-rock band Queensryche.  Very musical drummer.  A talented composer as well.

I like his work on Queensryche's Empire and Operation Mindcrime (Part I).

pmack, napanood mo na yung almost 10 minute drum solo sa isang tool concert? it said tomas haake sessioned for tool but it really looked like danny carey. id know cause tomas is a bit fat. and oh yeah, have u heard bout danny's one of a kind sonor kit? his kit was made of one kind of wood that became extinct after getting the trees for his kit... bad danny! oh well, good danny for his work in 10,000 days :-D but honestly, i like haake more. peace pmack! :-D

that was just a joke na sinabi niya sa modern drummer interview niya. as always with the band TOOL, they like to joke around and play pranks especially on their fans during interviews. hindi pa instinct yung puno na yun.

di ko pa napapanood yung particular video na yan and hindi ko pa gaano nare-research si thomas haake. but as far as i know, never pang nag-gig ang tool na may kulang na isang member sa kanilang apat (carey, keenan, jones, chancellor).

i saw them live nung august lang and it was like a dream come true. he did do a mind blowing solo. and ang bilis sobra ng kamay niya, not so much sa mga videos sa youtube pero pag live kitang-kita talaga. maynard was weird as usual. and the stage was all white (walls and floor) tapos may mga projectors sa taas na nagpro-project ng images onto the stage mismo while they play. ayos... i will never forget that day until i die.

he did use the kit that you mentioned sa tour. pero sa studio he uses a Ludwig kit and the specially made kit that Paiste and master drum m aker Jeff Ocheltree made for him. made from melted scrap Paiste cymbals. medyo sakit nga raw sa ulo kung yun ang gagamitin niya sa tour dahil sobrang bigat. kaya ginawan siya ng Sonor ng custom one-off kit for touring.

Well, that's Tool.  The members of Tool are into metaphysics, scientology, occult and all those deep, weird stuff.  These influences are reflected through their brand of music.  When I first listened to Tool's music, I didn't get it.  But I did my little Tool research, and now I understand why they are like that.  Listening to their music is kinda hard to swallow at first; but once you get it, you'll dig it.

Danny Carey is indeed one of the current drumming greats.  In his recent Modern Drummer interview (cover story, July 2006 issue), he mentioned about making an instructional video someday.  Sana matuloy yon.  Ang dami kong napupulot na fresh ideas from him.  For me, he's one of the most creative and technically sound drummers right now.  And I love his sound.

 8-)

there a lot of websites dedicated to the philosophy pf the band tool. their official site: http://www.toolband.com/index_frames.html  is one hotspot. http://toolshed.down.net/  http://toolshed.down.net/links/
search ka lang sa google to find out what the others are.

and also, for a little eye candy, search mo yung artist na si Alex Grey.

Luckily, I got all three Modern Drummer issues where in Danny Carey was the cover artist and feature.  Those are the December 1997, June 2001, and July 2006 issues, in case you wanna know.

And like what bro pmack just posted, yes, those are great Tool references, and I also got to know Tool through those sites.

When I check out artists, I not only check their music.  I try to dig deeper and do some research regarding their works, their philosophies, their insights... those kinds of stuff.  It helps me understand these artists much better.

I'm really digging Tool's Lateralus and 10000 Days albums.  My favorite Danny Carey drumming performances are The Grudge, Schism, Jambi and Rosetta Stoned.

Regarding Tim Alexander...  Oh yeah, he's one of my favorites too!  I think he's the most underrated drummer right now.  This guy can easily rank up with Neil Peart, Simon Phillips and guys of that level or caliber.  I consider him as one of my major influences.  He's one of my top three major influences on double bass technique (the other two are Mike Portnoy and Simon Phillips, in case you wanna know).

Dave Weckl, Mike Portnoy and of course MIKE TERRANA... Dati si Lars but when I saw these guys play, it changed my mind pero Metallica pa rin tugtugan ko, when it comes to heavy metal head baning music, I'll still play Metallica. Also, I saw an article about the worst drummers and Lars was on it. I know I'm not that good but if you compare him to those drummers above, you'll see what I mean... God bless...

sino ang mga drum idols nyo?

Was reading this article (10 new drum heroes you need to hear):
http://www.musicradar.com/news/drums/10-new-drum-heroes-you-need-to-hear-223219

** John Stanier made his name as the powerhouse drummer for alt-metal band Helmet back in the early '90s, garnering widespread acclaim for his endurance and accuracy behind the kit.

astig tong si john stanier, lupit mag live.. and totoo, mataas nga talaga yung crash nya. Lupit ng time and groove. Ibang klase

** David King -- Piano trio The Bad Plus ruffle feathers in the jazz world – and drummer David King is Chief Ruffler.

feature=player_embedded

Panalo rin tong si David King. Galing din mag live. Kita mo sa katawan nya yung groove :-). Ganda din yung album Happy Apple

** KJ Sawka -- The world of Jungle and Drum 'n' Bass grew out of a largely electronic scene in the early '90s – but more recently a small faction of brilliant drummers are bringing live, acoustic playing to the genre.

feature=player_embedded

** Zach Hill  -- To watch Zach Hill is exhausting. To copy him would be suicidal. Topless and slick with perspiration, a cyclone of hair and sinew, fusing berserker power with surgical accuracy, he is the human fill.

Tama nga yung sinabi nyan, he is the human fill. Just listen to the Hella stuff..

feature=player_embedded

** Greg Saunier -- Indie bands tend not to boast the best drummers in the world but San Francisco outfit Deerhoof most certainly has one in founder member Saunier.

Ibang klase, hihat, crash and ride rolled into one :-)

feature=player_embedded

** Chris Corsano -- One for the improv fans out there but don't let that put you off (not that it should) - Corsano completely rocks.

feature=player_embedded

** Logan Kroeber & Meric Long -- At last! Somebody's worked out how to combine the tribal polyrhythms of West African Ewe drumming with the slaughterhouse riffery of heavy metal within an alt-folk context!

feature=player_embedded

** Seb Rochford -- The British jazz scene boasts a fair number of talented sticksman but few have impressed in recent years as much as Seb Rochford: band-leader, composer, dedicated technician, workaholic, two-time Mercury Prize nominee, owner of vast hairdo.

david garibaldi : grooves...kakaiba to lintik na yan!
virgil donati: technicality and independence
gavin harisson: creativity and musicality
dave weckl: musicality and finesse
benny greb...benny groove. haha! he brings latin into a whole different level.
harley alarcon...during his time, he definitely raised the bar of philippine drumming imo.

here's my list...

Neil Peart "the professor" - Grew up listening to RUSH records and for me one of the best rock drummer! He is very creative and musical, lalo na when playing drum solos. You've got to hear him play during the buddy rich memorial concert.

Mike Mangini - speed, precision and endurance at it's finest! Hear him play intricate drum parts in Steve Vai's Fire Garden album. Insane!

Steve Smith - versatility and great technique! Listen to Steve Smith and Buddy's Buddies Live, galing ng mga chops niya.

Mike Portnoy - hands down, one of the most influential prog rock drummers!  :-) Try listening to DT's SFAM.. you can get loads of great stuff that you can use.

Tasty grooves and lots of interesting ideas can be heard from his playing. Listen to the 2 album of Mahavishnu Orchestra, and you will thank him.  :-D

Drumming Idols ko in chronological order:

Nag-start ako kay Lars Ulrich and Paul Bostaph elementary pa ko nun

Then si Tico Torres nung kasikatan ng Bon Jovi nung HS ako

Then nung freshman college ako na-discover ko ang music ng dream theater, dun ako na-addict kay Mike Portnoy.. until now sya main influence sa drumming ko..

But minsan nagsasawa din naging idol ko din ang ibang genre like Charlie Adams of Yanni, Dave Karasoni of The Rippingtons, etc.

But then again... ang drumming ko talaga is mainly influenced by Progressive Metal.
