Title: Gibson Guitar Users Thread
Post by: gainsucker on May 13, 2008, 09:35:34 AM
I already see an Ibanez and Yamaha Users thread, I think it's time to put up this thread.
If your guitar's headstock says GIBSON, post it here. Make it as informative as possible so we can give future Gibson guitar buyers idea on what they're gonna purchase. For discontinued models and original vintage ones, feel free to share your stories on how you acquired your precious Gibsons.
Please try to put the specs of your guitar/guitars. :-D
So i went to a music store with the money i made for the month and scouted for a guitar. I was already eyeing a firebird and an explorer guitar. So i found a beautiful white Gibson explorer and a Firebird V with those mini humbuckers, it took me an hour to decide on what to get. When i was choosing a thought passed by me saying, if i'm 50 years old and bald, an explorer wouldn't look right on me so i opted for the bird instead.
this quote made me laugh :-D

Used to own one, a 2004 Gibson Faded Cherry V-Factor.
Sorry guys but I must say I wasn't impressed with the guitar. I love Flying V's (used to have three now I only have one) and the one I left is an Epi '58 Korina RI. Finish wasn't stunning at all, fretwork and detail was mediocre. Considering it's made in the USA I compared it with my American Deluxe strat or my former American/highway one partscaster and Gibson lost miserably.
I was also shocked to discover that the Epi felt a lot better than the Gibson that's why I sold it to its new happy owner Rabidtongue.
I guess I wouldn't be that hyped with Gibson's anymore...unless they make the '58 Flying V RI haha.

meron ako isang 2002 gibson sg faded cherry na half-moon ang inlays.
second hand namin nakuha sa states naka-emg pickups (81 and 85 ata)...
but the pickups installed is not good for the guitar. (hehe opinion ko lang yan ha)
hanap ko yung gibson pickup sound eh, papalitan ko din yun pag nakahanap na ko ng appropriate gibson pickup for that sg.
i like that sg because it is very light and easy player sha.
tsaka 70's rock look ang sg so this guitar will stay with for a good number of years din siguro not unless makakuha ako ng sg standard na cherry. :-)
but i really hope i can get a gibson les paul...para matigil na din ako sa gastos. hehehe

meron ako LP studio, wine red colored. :-D bigay sakin ng uncle ko, retired guitarist na. hindi daw niya mapamana sa mga anak niya dahil drummer yun isa at walang interest sa music yun isa. nun makuha ko yun LP sobrang nalula ako. i've always been a fan of LPs and i never thought i'd own a gibson. :-o
i've tried playing with it, nagulat ako sa tunog! the chords sounded complete, you could hear the clear resonance of the bass and treble strings. the leads i was doing sounded thick rich and warm. it was orgasmic!
at that time i was a reckless college boy, spending most of my money on cs and dota. i was already playing in small bands then but i settled with an RJ LP since it was the only one i could afford..
moving forward, after acquiring the gibson LP, my musical influences changed, my playing styles improved(?). sobrang laking pasasalamat ko din sa uncle ko. i'll never let go of this LP. ipapamana ko rin ito sa mga magiging anak ko.

[quote author=phoenix_rising link=topic=92916.msg1239382#msg1239382 Honestly, the firebird studio is top heavy and can really get your left hand tired, but the tone is really awesome, much better than my Les Paul. The firebird will remain stock. :-D [/quote]
saludo ako sa firebird mo sir! :-D

Always wanted a LP with active EMGs ala zakk Wylde, just cant justify putting them on a reissue. Hahaha. Its all in my head.

I have a Gibson SG :-D I'll post pics soon, pinapaayos ko cosmetics kay Sir Arie!
It bites! However, I have one major problem with it...
ANY TIPS on how to fix the neck pup? It "see-saws" eh. parang hindi nakafix... I checked it out, there appears to be no problem. Is it a common problem with gibson SGs na may pickguard-mounted pups?

Great looking axe Gainsucker.
Yea, a Strat would definitely complement the Les Paul.
I read somewhere (I think it was in a MacUser forum) that Gibson and Fender are the only the guitars you need and the rest are toys. I suppose PRS will have something to say about that.
Peace.

Question lang mga sir, i noticed most of the Gibson guitars na nakapost eh, pinapalitan ang pick ups, does this mean na di ganun kaganda ang pickups ng gibson?

nice duo you got there! congrats on the R9. :-) my ultimate GAS guitar!
+ 1 on the RS kit. i installed one on my R8 (together with WCR Goodwoods pups) and it made me realize how crappy the stock pots are. the RS kit coupled with a great PAF clone PUP will totally transform an already great guitar into a killer one. i haven't touched my other guitars as of late since i modded my R8. nothing beats a great lester, IMHO.

wag nyo na pansinin yung nasa right. :-D (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL1658/11548146/20477794/335282698.jpg)
But there is one or two actually. And here's a clue to my number 1. :) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v481/miks696/IMG_1135.jpg)
a gustavsson???? (i'll take a stab at your no. 2: a Baker???)
a gustavsson to me is a confused guitar. it doesn't know if it want's to be a telecaster or a les paul.
kidding aside i'm sure it's a great guitar but to me it looks like it's somebody else's version of a les paul. it's a variation of an original design, it might be better but it's still a copy. :-)
to me it's Gibson or bust!
Title: Re: Gibson Guitar Users Thread
Post by: vhunter on September 30, 2008, 09:40:11 AM
Actually, A JG is a Paul Thru and thru. There is nothing telecaster about it other than the shape (which is smaller than a tele and closer to a LP size). The only reason Johann switched the shape was for patent infringement reasons. The purpose of a blues master was to correctly copy a vintage 50's paul. Glues, woods, angles, everything was studied and refined to become the bluesmaster. It's also the only guitar that alot of real burst owners say is closest to a real burst. Everything else is a modern guitar.
Anyhow, hope this helps.
The baker is closer to a PRS than a paul IMHO.

Gustavsson. Its arguably one of the finest guitars in the world.
that's the answer i was expecting... :-)
I'm sure that's just one of the guitars you won't bring in a gig... :-D
Title: Re: Gibson Guitar Users Thread
Post by: vhunter on October 01, 2008, 05:08:34 PM
Ive actually gigged it a few times. Hahaha
But no one ever cares that Im playing it. It's really a guitarists guitar if you know what I mean. Its by ABSOLUTELY NO MEANS A PRACTICAL GUITAR. I find the baker as my most gigable guitar because its built like a rock. The finish is solid (ive gigged it alot at konte palang yung buckle rash). Basically I play the JG for special occasions (like when im trying out a new amp live etc etc or a nice big show), I play the Baker when I want something consistent and I know will perform, I play the pauls when I wanna get a reaction from the audience and sound a little edgier/ raw.
The historics are still IMHO the best value for money pauls around, specially the r7, r8 and G0. Id never recommend for someone to save up for a JG, but Id openly tell guys to save up for r7 and r8's. If you had to be practical.. gibson parin. (no body needs a bugatti veyron right? well be fine with our porshe's Haha)

Thanks sir. I definitely agree with what you just said and i really adore your Gustavsson. If i become a billionnaire, i'll give everyone here a Gustavsson of their choice...
I just hope Gibson guitars would be more affordable so that most of the musicians here in our country can afford one. They are so expensive, it'll take me 2 to 3 years to save up and get one, buti na lang i got one agad as a gift... Despite the fact that they are overpriced, i'd still get one. Iba yung Tone, Feel, and playability. imho
Only a Gibson is good enough... :-D

Havnt posted my new R9. It's an 03, Ive had it for about 4-5 months now and its really a lot of fun. Thanks to Flippo for this one. It's got an RS kit and Sheptones. Killer guitar really. Yup thats a 1 piece maple top. :)
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/mikel.antunez/SN8cZJG1dzI/AAAAAAAAAqI/yVVAApsXhn8/s720/IMG_1704.JPG) Flame on
a gustavsson???? (i'll take a stab at your no. 2: a Baker???)
a gustavsson to me is a confused guitar. it doesn't know if it want's to be a telecaster or a les paul.
kidding aside i'm sure it's a great guitar but to me it looks like it's somebody else's version of a les paul. it's a variation of an original design, it might be better but it's still a copy. :-)
The baker is closer to a PRS than a paul IMHO.
don't get me wrong guys. i don't doubt that Vhunters JG (and Baker for that matter) is an exceptional instrument (or a work of art if you will). I would have appreciated JG's more if he came up with something fresh and innovative. My vanity as a guitarist or someone who works hard to earn dough (and argues hard with the missus for approval) for my toys prevents me from buying an instrument that as Vhunter stated as:
The purpose of a blues master was to correctly copy a vintage 50's paul. Glues, woods, angles, everything was studied and refined to become the bluesmaster. It's also the only guitar that alot of real burst owners say is closest to a real burst.
IMHO, luthiers should create modern classics that people will still strive to copy after 50 years like people have been doing to the 1959 Les Paul Sunburst. Admittedly even the Gibson Historics are nowhere near the 1959 sunburst of old but it’s still one helluva killer sounding and playing instrument and it’s a fraction of a cost of trying to obtain a vintage 50’s Les Paul (or a JG).
If I want a Les Paul I’ll buy it from the guys who first came up with the concept: Gibson.
Of course this may all change when I get the chance to try a JG and for some unexplained reason has more than enough cash laying around.

i own a 1970's Gibson SG (cherry), Binenta sakin ng friend ko un dahil ata sa matinding pangangailangan.(9000-php) and i dont know kung anu un..nagulat nga ko sa price e. so when he told me that he was selling his guitar, wala nang patumpik-tumpik pa, i immediately went to Rizal (Cainta ata un,and I'm from Cavite) to grab the axe and paid 9k (baka magbago pa isip e), and i was stunned when i tried it to his computer speakers. hehe.. the sound, the worn out body paint (I like worn out paint on guitars, it looks very cool), the tone specially. it sings like a woman, so i married my axe that day!. hehe. the problem is i forgot her name.. biigyan ko na cya ng name dati pa hindi ko na maalala dahil sa thesis ko nung college. but anyway, i feel very lucky to own one. Because its not just an ordinary guitar that you can see in every gig, and in every jam, it's a Gibson and it's a 70's!
chadik.. Habol ko nalang mga pics.. Bao!

ser, Nangyari na rin sakin yan before ..share ko lang.(true story of negligence).in my case its a gibson sg '65 orig not reissue with only 6 digits serial (501xxx)on a gator gibson sg flight case pa. The story begins when im on sm bacoor where i have a deal..sell my strat to a person na dun gusto makipagmit..as soon matapos deal namin namasyal muna ako..kasi ngayon lang ako naka punta ng SM bacoor and i want to know if my Perfect Pitch Music Store doon..so,meron nga PPitch wayback 2004 or 2005 yata un..well now CLOSED na yata Pitch dun.. So to continue the story..I met this guy named Gerrold aka bluesboy1216 he is a cashier that time,so i get into the store and shop with my eyes!he.he.hindi naman talaga ako bibili e titingin lang..so he approach me nicely and do his thing..then sbi ko meron ba kayong les paul na gibson?sbi nya wala po e..kasi hindi carry ng pitch dati gibson guitar..then all of a sudden he said that a friend of him was selling a Gibson SG guitar and a bnew marshall avt-275 amp at a very cheap price.. It was price at 22k at first pero sbi ko hindi ko kaya.. kaya ibinaba pa ng 16k w/gator sg hardcase...whoaaaa..i was a very novice..newbie..in easy term "wala pang alam"..but i know that gibsons are mahal talaga.. Tapos pumunta sya sa likod para kunin yung gibson sg..he told me that his friend is very ill and indire need of cash kaya benebebta ng mura mga gamit!as i open the flight hardcase ..in myself there is no feeling of excitement kasi hindi ko pa masyado type nun ang mga sg guitar e!wtf :?!and it was the 1st time na makakahawak ako ng sg guitar... So, i grab the sg a feel a bit weary na bakit ang gaan nito sir sabi ko...?!he.he.for all i know mabigat ang mga gibson kasi..sabi ni gerrold ewan daw nya kung bakit ganun kasi he is a strat user not a lp user..kaya hindi daw nya type yun..in my mind naguguluhan ako..mukha naman kasi orig at malinis ang pagkagawa talaga magaan lang talaga sya.!sabi ko pa nga baka si sir arie h. lang gumawa e .he.he. It has a 2pcs p90s,natural color, mop inlays, and indeed very mint despite its age!very vintage looking.. Before i go i get the serial number 501xxx 6digits..sabi ko kay gerrold ill think about it muna kasi magaan nga sabi ko parang ampaw e.he.he.then will do some research(which hindi ko naman talaga ginawa na i-research un sg kasi hindi ko ugali na mag-internet pa that time but i manage to go gibson serial site kaya nalaman ko 1965 cya ginawa!). Pumunta ulet ako sa sm bacoor with a MIM Fender strat plus a sum of 9thou cash in my pocket,, To do some offers to gerrold na in my mind baka pumayag sya na bilhin nya ang strat ko ng 7k na lang para mabili ko yung gibson sg!Kasi kulang budget ko.. Gerrold inspect my mim strat and he sort of liking it!pero kulang din pera nya 4k lang.waaahh..hindi ko to mai-uuwi ang SG sabi ko sa sarili ko! That day ended like a nightmare on elms street!!!ha.ha. I've started texting sir arie hipolito about the sg na kung magaan nga ba talaga ang mga SG o mabigat din parang LP..then he replied.."no,magaan lang talaga ang mga sg around 2.5 to 3.5kgs. or 6-7pnds lang"....whoaaaaa....at nun ko lang napatunayan sa sarili ko na very much authentic pala ang nahawakan ko '65 SG!!!and by the fate of destiny i call perfect pitch sm bacoor to talk to gerrold para bilhin na ng cash, but he said the SG is SOLD bro!!that day only!!!F@c.! i was shock and feel very cold,.but thats the way it is..its not really for me thou.. gerrold is now one of my close friend dito sa pm pati sa fs .he.he.

to gibson lp standard users:
why do you spend more for the standard if the studio can give you the same tone with a just a few modifications (pickup, tone pot and hardware upgrades?). based on my research, the studio is exactly like the standard, wala lang bling factor. do the higher end flame/plus tops and binding contribute to the tone?
pwede rin naman sa looks, pero yun lang ba yung factor? are there other factors that make the standard more special than the studio? how about the wood used (better quality ba?). hmmm...

hi tres. i think your sg is a copy of the gibson sg custom. lahat kasi ng gibson na galing 70's may serial number na. hmmm.. and the custom split diamond inlay is inverted. it should be the other way around.. and the logo's material should be MOP as far as i know. anyway, regarding its restoration, yes, it can be done. goodluck! :)

well, that figures....
i was kinda thinking if there's someone here who wants to let go of his Gothic Flying V... might as well pass it over to me... hehe :-D
i saw one in eBay just now, however, it's no longer in stock form... he replaced the pickguard and the jackplate with white ones... and the guitar was selling for $278.88, plus $39.00 for shipping within the US...

Hey guys, I'm really keen into getting a Gibson Firebird VII. I am a strat guy and I got sold on the vibrola and 3 mini HB's and 12" radius of the FB VII, I also watched video demos and it can really come close to that strat quack. It comes with a high price tag as well, I need your thoughts if it's worth the damn money, anyone ever tried it? Thanks.

Thanks.
tom has a firebird..i just can't remember if it's a firebird VII..test his guitar so you can have an idea on the feel of the mini HBs of the firebird

Beautiful LP, Borgy. With pictures like these LP lovers like me will always be tempted to look around for more.
Must stop.
Congrats.
Thanks, man. I heard from the Doc Farseer that you got one of his r9. Mine is very far from what you acquired. I have been dreaming to get one r8 or r9. Wala pa rin katuparan. Tumaas kasi US dollars eh.
Juzaen, I admire your LP. That's the best r8 i had ever seen. Kargado pa. The sound of my LP is normal. 490 pickups lang. Baka kargahan ko ng burstbucker or tim. pwede din sigi z90 parang kay blue budha's 90s LP. You guys should keep your Historics. Prices here in North America are sky-rocketing these days. I believe all historics of Dave are not VOS. Panalo yan.

I was really lucky getting an R9 from Doc FarSeer. He takes care of his guitars like they were his children. The historics Juzaen and I purchased from FarSeer are indeed keepers. Also Juzaen did a superb job upgrading the pups. Like I said suerte lang talaga.
Several months back I thought I would not be able to own a historic. Just save (just like Vhunter mentioned in one of his posts). And in the States or Canada (I think that is where you are staying), there are more opportunities where you can acquire used historics at good prices. Hoping you can get one in the near future.

I hope it sounds good. I went thru a bunch of these at Tom Lee and they sounded pretty bad.
thanks sir alex. i've heard a lot of bad stories too. well, mine sounds "okay". it's not a '59 or anything. it sounds "better" in a lot of ways tho compared to the les pauls i've had in the past. this is just "honkier" than my old gibby studio. it's perfect for my music right now anyways. how much are these at tom lee? do you still remember?

Makakasali na din! hehehe
Not really brand new but in like-new condition hehehe I wouldn't really bother getting one of these brand new (mahal eh). NaGAS ako coz of the sound and color. When I got it, I realized, parang Slash model kaya medyo lalo akong natuwa hehe
Short story: I've always been in love with this LP since I first saw it. Owner wasn't really planning on selling it at all. One day my friend told me that the owner's decided to let go of it. Wrong timing wala akong kapera pera but God made a way (seryoso) to bless me with this and it is indeed a testimony of mine na hindi lang needs ang binibigay ni Lord. Pati Wants! Praise God :-D

i went to my local guitar guy the other day, tried to order a vintage RS long shaft 500k (oil-on-paper caps) and he told me that in europe it's hard to get them.. insted he told me he'll make me the same circuit but with his components, i asked him to show me a guitar that had his circuit in it and it sounds good to me, so mabe i'll consider going with his solution (since i trust him and he's a great tech/luthier). anyways sinubukan ko tangalin yung speed knobs, ang hirap pala bro.. parang naka glue yung knobs sa shaft ng pots.. tsk.. sakit sa ulo, ndi ko alam kung pano ko tatangalin yun.. :|

Hi Bro. I noticed that your rosewood fretboard looks a bit pale? Have you tried dabbing it with a little bit of Lemon Oil?

My first Gibson, LP Standard Honey Burst 99 model.. sold off 2 guitars, lots of pedals at kinailangan ng madaming sideline para mabili sya. sarap ng feel ibang iba sa Greco LP copy ko, set-up to .11's, standard tuning. :-) worth every penny at pagtitiis.

cool choice! i think wolftone is right up there with BKP when it comes to humbucker pickups. :-)
Sheptone has been getting good reviews, too. But don't take my word for it 'coz I haven't tried any of those :-P

sheptones are good but i heard a bad review not about his pickups but his commitment. I went to Wolfe instead. I sent him clips of my les paul and told him about my guitar. He said that my guitar must be tamed as it is already bright, which is good. :-D
he recommended the Wolfetone Marshallheads overwound with Alnico 2 magnets for a smokey tone. Even though he's famous for his Dr Vintage and Legends, he chose the Marshallheads as they will balance the guitar's voice.
I chose Zebra covered with raw satin. (para if ever i remove the covers, ok pa rin, I'm a sucker for Zebra pickups :))
by the way, i'm sellin' my burstbuckers (pots and caps included) only for http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,236129.0.html

Ahhh pickups. The tone quest never ends. Good choice on the Wolfetone Mashallheads. I've tried Marshallheads and Legends and I find them very good. Hey, Johan installs a variant of the Legends model in his Bluesmasters.
It's good time to have a Les Paul and try many of the boutique offerings. You can talk to the winders and describe to them what you want and they will wind 'em right for you. Unfortunately, with the many winders out there doing their own take of the PAF tone, it is a very expensive and time consuming process to try each one. In my experience a pickup may sound very good in one guitar but so-so in another. I find that very frustrating but fun, cuz' I get a high experimenting on pickups. Alas, that was many moons ago. I am not made of money and I've narrowed down on a few winders for my axes. Someday when I get to earn more mulah, I will try others. Yep, for me pups are also GAS.

It is news to me that Jeff Shepard of Sheptones has a problem with his commitments. He has wound for me some outstanding Tributes and AB Customs and they have a very unique flavor.
Peace.

@ maxi_musikero - not sure if all stock ito, pero from the looks ng mga hardware niya mukhang di pa napalitan, pati pickups hindi pa din napalitan, yung binago ko lang dyan is yung mga cream na plastics at truss rod cover, everything else is ganun na nung nakuha ko to :) pati wiring neto di ko ginalaw. yung complete set-up and re-fretting were done by sir Jon of elegee.
@ gainsucker - DEFINITELY. di ko to bebenta kahit anong mangyari. thanks bro!

mga bro... i could be wrong but there were no les pauls in the mid 60s... les pauls became SG's in 1961 with the looming divorce of Les and Mary Ford... the les paul design had its first reissue in 1968 - 69 first as a gold top.
Also, the les paul design first came out in 1952 which were all goldtops, woith the original ones having unbound necks.... if it's a 20th year anniv it should at least be a 1972 model...
Let me check my books to be sure, but beautiful guitar nonetheless :) play it in good health bro! :)

As quoted from the book by Tony Bacon "The 50 Years of Gibson Les Paul"
"It occured to Gibson in 1974 that it was 20 years since the Les Paul Custom had appeared (the first les paul custom was made in 1954 with the staple neck pup I believe) so they celebrated by issuing a custom with a twentieth anniversary inlay at the 15th fret..."
Don't let that get you down though! Your guitar looks like it's got mojo and looks like it has tone dripping out of its bindings and that's all that will ever matter IMHO hehe

actually, di naman ako talaga sure kung 60s nga ito, bahala na mga experts mag judge sa kanya, all i know is that the guitar is vintage na.
20th anniv ito, nabura lang sa inlay niya nung niliha ni sir Jon. :)
nahawakan ko na tong gitara nung 14 years old pa lang ako, never actually thought about the value, yung guitar itself is comfortable na para sa akin since then.

Magkakulay yung nut and rings, maybe mabagal mag age, hehe...
I'm aging the tuners, tailpiece and bridge bukas para mag match sa age ng guitar.

Ask ko lang sa mga fellow gibson owners here. Sulit ba ang LP R8 VOS? I'm thinking to let go one of my hobby(photography) para lang makabili nito. Pag mga custom shop na LP ba di nag depreciate yung price? Planning to buy this for the sake of investment and also for GAS.

straight up answer for you ... a basic historic les paul is not an investment ... not even if you just keep it in a glass case its whole life, which would be sad
the closest to the "investment" category would be stuff like limited edition murphy aged Gibbons, Page models etc which are sometimes priced even more expensive than vintage pieces (ridiculous but true)
other than that, the only other way to go would be the vintage direction... lespauls circa 1969

am happy with my r8 and r7. value wise mas mababa n talaga sya kesa sa original price. my advise abang ka 2nd hand. lalo na sa singapore ang mga guitara nila d naman laspag kapag 2nd hand. by the way you can try my guitars para ma sipra mo muna bago ka bumili.

tongski pa try naman ng R8 mo bago ako mag decide. ano mas trip mo between R7 and R8? wala ako masyado makitang 2nd hand dito sa Singapore. may bnew kay BGW pero ridiculous yung price.

it'll definitely go down bro, not unless you become super famous and everything you use becomes valuable.
VOS/HISTORICS are really fun to play. I'd get one again once i get more funds.
If you plan though on getting a really good sounding Paul, i suggest you try them first. There may be an exceptional historic/standard out there and there may be a ridiculously priced turd sounding vintage piece.
Filippo got lucky, really lucky with his conversion.

sure thing kuting!!! pm lang bro. sengkang area ako. always happy show off my stuff. haha. nagsisisi nga ako bumili ako brand new r8. pwede nmn makabili ng 2nd hand mint condition. abang ka lang pre. ako din kasi nag aabang 2nd hand n r9. sure ako may susulpot somewhere. dati mas prefer ko r7. pero after changing stock pups to bkp pgmule mas gsto ko n ung r8. try mo na lang pareho. kaw mGdecide.

Darth,
I agree with Allan and Jay! There are definitely nice historics to be found especially the ones starting in 2007 onwards... parang may nahanap si Gibson na secret stash ng wood bigla noong 2007.. mukhang masmaraming les paul na maganda tumunog starting sa 2007 and up! Subok ka lang ng subok until you find one that sounds like the sound in your head! Agree too to buy second hand... if you buy second, the value should hold (but not increase)... my 2 c's

any permanent change done on a guitar will lower the resale value. Refinishing will make it a challenge to resell.

Hi guys, anybody has an extra gibson style truss rod wrench you could sell to me?
If theres none available whats the wrench diameter I can use (sprocket type)...
How do you adjust your trust rods..I understand its quite different from the regular allen wrench type as gibson style uses compression or something...my neck has a slight bow and I wish to correct it..is my truss rod too tight? should I loosen it up a bit to relax the rod thus straigtening the neck?
Thanks!

nylon ang nakalagay dapat to be vintage accurate. i haven't tried one, maybe someday. i've tried bone though which is a better replacement sa stock which is corian.

oo chainsaw tawag jan, makes sense naman kahit papano hehe.. kay Filippo ko nga lang din nalaman yan kasi I bought mine from him hehe. Parang 70's or 80's mdl ata un akin. kasi may 3 or 4 versions yan, yun mga earlier ones are smaller and the latter ones are bulky daw parang acoustic gtr case ang laki.
sought after by collectors din kasi uber tibay ang pagkagawa, except the locks hahaha.
mabigat nga din, bakal ang yari nya sa loob after the hard plastic or whatchamacallit na materials ginamit sa case...kasi ginawan ko ng makeshift lock un akin para maclose ko. So i drilled screws and push and reglued the foam interior.
does your case fully closes kahit di nakalock? un akin kasi mejo bukas e. natatakot akong ipush harder inside yun gtr baka madali un neck.

Parang 70's or 80's mdl ata un akin. kasi may 3 or 4 versions yan, yun mga earlier ones are smaller and the latter ones are bulky daw parang acoustic gtr case ang laki.
sought after by collectors din kasi uber tibay ang pagkagawa, except the locks hahaha.
mabigat nga din, bakal ang yari nya sa loob after the hard plastic or whatchamacallit na materials ginamit sa case...kasi ginawan ko ng makeshift lock un akin para maclose ko. So i drilled screws and push and reglued the foam interior.
does your case fully closes kahit di nakalock? un akin kasi mejo bukas e. natatakot akong ipush harder inside yun gtr baka madali un neck.

@Van, nice take on the Gold Reflector knobs, man! Is it more of an Amber-Yellow-ish or Amber-Orange-ish on close and personal, first hand look? It's no-brainer tho that the lights sometimes affect the color!
I was aiming for the Slash/Gary Moore look too, I saw a Slash AFD model but I was surprised to see it having poor flames and mediocre top, it looked liked photo-flame from my perspective (a mere veneer would look even better than that guitar I have seen) Well, that's just me.
Anyhow, yours got prominent flames and great 3D effect and I would suggest an amber tip to go with the color. Yours Looks like a Guitar Of the Week or a special run, so I guess they must have place a premium top on it!
Here's my Gibsons. 1995 Les Paul Classic Premium Plus and 1994 Gibson SG Standard (sold already). I owned a few from Gibson LP Studio, to plain top Honeyburst Standard, to 70's Custom and a nighthawk special. But this one will stay as I am a sucker for the flames!

@teleclem and kimhags
Thanks for the appreciation. The premium plus models have insane flames, they are a tad higher than the PLUS models. Plus and Premium Plus tops during this era (early to mid 90's) were far off better than some Reissues.

Hey man, thanks! Honestly, i don't know how to describe the color. It looks orangy/red and sometimes its on yellowish-natural side. Yes, it's a limited edition standard, the finish is called "Santa Fe" if im not mistaken. I just got a new real amber speed knobs and can't wait to put them on. I would like to change the pickups just for the "Slash" look but that's nuts and impractical, we'll see in few months i guess since haven't decided on which tone i should go for, whether to go for classic or modern sound.
Your guitar looks perfect as it is, i would change it to zebras but i really like the les pauls with simple look. What pickups did you go for?

Hey Van, these pickups were stock 496R and 500T open coils. I sold them and it's currently rigged with SD Active Blackouts, unfortunately I left the guitar in P.I.
Now I am considering the Slash SD's or the Jazz JB combo on zebra or a pair of BKP but I wanted a more aggressive tone, so not until I get this ax back in my arms that I will be able to install new ones and perhaps has a decision by then lol. The SD Blackouts makes this guitar growl but looks nasty and un-classy. Or perhaps get it back to stock and find myself another set of 496R and 500T. But that seems too distant of a time...could take me a year to say the least.
Get an amber tip, I look forward to seeing it with the amber knobs.
Btw, what pickups are installed on your guitar?

That sucks! Why would you let yourself LP-less??? I heard that 496 and 500 have more output than my Burstbucker pros. Yes, SD sounds like the "last resort" if you"re looking for that crunch and classier look.
I got the real amber speed knobs! I really like how it look on my guitar, i think it will stay.
Mas maganda yung amber kesa sa gold. haha. The gold knobs made the guitar look cheap. Amber is the way.

Rubbing compound. Follow-up with polishing compound. Automotive product brands will do nicely.

That finish is interesting. Can't say I like the change in knobs when the finish color keeps changing! In the photos, she can't decide if she's amber or orange. (parang babae nga gitara mo, in a "does this dress look ok?".. "how about with this pair of shoes" kind of way)

@Van
You went for the Amber Speed Knobs pala. Amber Bell Knobs will also look good on your LP.
OT: I am currently thinking it over if I will get an LP or a SE245 to cure the LP gas, or perhaps a SG Standard instead as it's really in my wish list after letting go of my SG . But I am also gassing for a ENGL gigmaster head and a Mini Rec 25. So being LP-less for the moment is like in a bad withdrawal stage.

Yup its an r7 Not a historic Makeover. Just some good honest use over the last 8 years. Its a 2004 R7 I bought back in 04 which got sold to a bunch of people and found its way back home to me. It has some checking on it, a lot of dings, and a lot of greening. Its a fantastic sounding instrument. Started out stock and now has parts from i have no idea where and a pair of throbaks. Still sounds amazing. I stand by this guitar saying its really one of the better ones to come out of the custom shop... and for the price it can't be beat. Will take pics of the scars tonight

Bro, sorry for the late reply, just got to backtrack at ngayon ko lang nakita message mo!
Yup that was inside the Fender room sa Swee Lee. I was fortunate to test and play 5 guitars in that room - Les Paul aka "Goldie", a Fender CS Esquire and Tele, a Roadworn tele and Kurt Cobain's signature Jaguar all thru a Fender Deluxe Reverb (that darn DRRI in Swee Lee was such a sweet amp! I thought it sang because of goldie so I requested for MIM's to plug in the amp and turns out even tele and jag sang as well!). The girl(manager?) was the one attending to me and I politely asked if it's ok to take pics and she said she smiled with a "sure". =)
Ok naman bro, in fact I'm actually liking it. It has a milder tone particularly on the neck pickup, as for the bridge it tends to sound brighter compared to the other Gibson 49x pickups
^cool gt. Ok ba yun sheptone compared sa bb? Mas warm? Ayaw ko na ng bbs ang muddy
Yep, the sheptones are good. You can also ask Micsis when we installed and tested it on my tie-dye. On the neck pickup, it made the tone more transparent and clearer. As for the bridge, it sounds a tad brighter but in a good way, and it's not harsh-sounding.

Retained ba yung clarity and still sounding fat and honky? Sheptones do get great reviews, together with wolfetones.
Throbacks are darn expensive :(

oo bro, mas clear and bright compared sa BBs. sa set up ko mas matapang sa bridge, neck is more jazzy. depends pa rin sa tonal adjustment.
thanks for the info. i almost ordered these kaso ang tagal ng wait time 4 weeks then delivery is 2-3 weeks, so i decided to get a a2p slash set, also zebra. mighty fine pickups but not as sweet as mules. :)

I'm finally going to be able to join this thread! Here's my first Gibson ever. It's a 1996 Gibson SG Special (got it from Sir jm the mute). I've always been a Fender guy (Strats, Teles) but I also had the chance to own a nice lawsuit LP copy before. I'm the nth owner but let me just say that this guitar just sings. I really like the fat profile of the neck. I also like the Seymour Duncan SH-1 (neck)/ Gibson Classic 57 (bridge) combo, very warm and vintage sounding pair. The coil split options also give me a variety of tones. This plus a Wampler Plextortion and a Lovepedal Eternity Burst = tone heaven. All in all, I'm a very happy camper and I hope that I get the chance to own more Gibson guitars in the future particularly an LP (this thread is just full of majestic LPs). Cheers!
Nice one! I noticed that the knobs are high. Is that normal? I was thinking my new LP's knobs are too high, but now that I see this I'm beginning to think that it is normal.

Yup, more brutal than my emg 81-7. Love how it sounds on my recto. You should get one of you have a have a chance.
Awesome top, got a VOS vibe on the finish!
Alnico 8 ba yung MHD Asylum mo? I was looking at a pair of double cremes a few days ago pero Alnico 5. How does it sound? I hear great things about the Asylums, how they clean up pretty well.

Im planing to get a Gibson USA LP for me, hopefully before 2013 ends. Searching the net led me to this. http://tinyurl.com/ovb56sr
Interestingly enough, I read some article that there are China made guitars imitating the Gibson brand and even using its name. I think this is one of them.
Sana walang mag paloko.

Hi Gibson Afficionados,
Any advice and opinions on the 2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard? Someone is offering this to me at a fair price..and the burst and color matches up to my liking..and pretty new.. Reading about the new stuff they did to this.like the Neutrik Locking jacks, the chambered body, the assymetrical neck..etc.. Just would like to ask around a bit for tips about this particular model..
I went to one of our local stores and tested a Gibson LP 60s tribute. Unfortunately it was not a good experience with that particular model.
String buzz here and there.
Probably a production defect?
Pano nalang kung sa online mo binili yung guitar then ganun out of the box? Ang gastos kasi ibabalik mo pa (shipping cost).
Good thing you were able to test it out. If you bought online, well... you know how rant threads start.
I felt the same thing about a 50's tribute with humbuckers. Being a stripped down finish, it's amazing how certain flaws can jump out at you. I'm certain I could be holding a sta.mesa guitar with the rough fretboard edges, strings not staying in tune, etc. I'm sure a setup helps, but man there are some dogs.
The next tribute model, on the other hand, I just can't help gushing over. The finish feels much nicer, but I guess it's partly because everything else falls into place. The factory setup was superb as well.
So.. keep looking out for a winner, if these tributes appeal to you. Just be aware that the finishes on the tributes are much thinner compared to standards and studios. You might be better off holding out for a standard or traditional.
@gandy
How much? And can you try it out first? Check out the specs, between 2000 and 2013, the standards' "standard" is all over the place. Check out the FAQ on MLP, just so you know exactly what you're getting into before you buy.

some peeps, including me, fin that callaham hardware can make your guitar sound bright.
maybe to modern sounding guitars, they can do wonders but guitar to guitar basis talaga. as upgrades are always a 2 way street---pwedeng gumanda, pwedeng pumangit ang tunog.

I'll get a Gibson LP this 2015. I have to, want to, need to. grrrr.
agree, if you are talking about vintage Gibsons... but if you are buying a new one, even if you paid US $15k for it, bababa na agad pagkabayad mo pa lang.

1987 Les Paul Custom 1930s Uke-3 2014 Les Paul '58 RI
as to buying new or used, my best LP so far is my 2014 R8, a very close second is the '87 Custom. so you can find good ones new or used. but new ones from the Custom Shop are more consistent IMO.

Man, I gotta have a Gibson. I want to know and feel what the fuzz is all about.
I'm done with other brands,
I just hope it's going to be worth it having/owning one.

hmmm... I think its the subconcious and years of marketing strategy, legendary brand label, and every young boys dream image and favorite artists thats speaking to you..
tama si Gainsucker...
find a good deal, and try it out and inspect it... there are far better and more superior guitars out there for same or less amount of money..
but I agree, its good to have one at least once in your life to get the excitement..especially opening the case for the first time and having a whif of that pleasant vanilla smell..(which isnt nitro, but the glue of the case lining)
one thing good about gibbys is they really retain their value overtime...and are highly desireable pieces..
they really look good x10 during the honeymoon period..hehe
goodluck!

not all gibson guitars retain their value. the ones that retain their value are the vintage one...mostly the 50s-60s era, the ones used by famous musicians and customs and limited runs. regular production gibsons which are produced by the thousands will not. i read someone posted here that after buying a gibson from the store, it will depreciate by 20%. like a car. i agree on that.

I agree.. I mean, on the second hand market... (which is the best place to buy a gibby) on the second hand market you could buy a used one and if you dont bond with it sell it for the same price or if its a highly desirable one with a bit of a profit.. definitely if you buy new..the moment you step out of the store...that 100k gibby will be 80k or less..
so buy a used gibby for 50-80k you can keep that value range if you decide to sell it.. to many folks, guitars with "Gibson" mark on the headstock is still highly prized and desirable..and would still get a good deal buying used.
@Magus tambay ka sa My Les paul forums..to read abouts stories about your dream guitar..hahaha and how they bash even Gibsons CEO and his decisions...how every new year model release is junk.... and the countless GIBSONS QUALITY CONTROL IS CRAP threads, but read at your own risk.. I guess its best to just buy a gibby and get it over with and play the hell out of it...

i have seen 2 gibby trads with floating tailpiece, meaning the studs are not flushed down to the wood. there is a 4mm gap between the studs and the body. you can only see this if you remove the part that holds the studs. there is a noticeable effect on sound. im not sure if all trads are built like this.

Gibson user here! Got a '92 Gibson SG Standard with battle scars enough to show its age though it still sings sweet!
By the way, can someone please enlighten me with my questions:
- What's the difference between SGs with a "batman" style pickguard vs those with small ones? - Seems like I am not experiencing neckdive with my guitar, is this a case-to-case basis or is there a certain year where SGs are really prone to this one? - What are the main differences between a standard and a reissue? - My guitar is already 22 years old and still, the finish hasn't experienced checking yet. Aside from the "razor method" which is way out of my list, what are the ways to get that natural checking on the finish?
Thanks in advance!

I do not have any freezer where my guitar will fit. Plus the fact that it may warp the neck due to the sudden change in temperature, that's why I believe checking really occurs in places where there are four seasons a year.

Both waste of money.
The CS50's - downgraded features than 2013/2014 tapos priced higher pa. True historic - upgraded plastics and pickup covers (may not even be vintage-accurate) at $3k++ mark-up. I'd rather buy a replica from the likes of GY, TB, etc. than a TH.

Korek ka dyan! With inflation and price of historic going up every year, price increase will spill over din sa used...so now is the time to buy while prices are still reasonable. At this point unless Gibson goes back to 50s style nitro and use brazilian rosewood fretboard (both of which malabong gawin ng Gibson), wala na akong nakikitang notable upgrades na pwede pang gawin.
Alert to potential buyers: May mga good deals sa classifieds on used historics. Haha :-D

i saw some brandnew 2013 Gibson SG and LP where the serial number and "Made in USA" are poorly stamped or painted over. is this normal with new guitars or older Gibson's also have the same issue?
issue seems to be more evident with Ebony or dark solid colors. Thanks!

hehe.. the usual gibson production inconsistencies (rushed stamping, or napasobra pintura etc) siguro.. :) no biggie, --but maybe a hassle if one decides sell it pagtagal ..with the folks worried it might be a fake or can be hard to verify..

2007 Gibson Les Paul Studio Premium Plus
*Limited run for a few years. I traded one of my mint condition Vigier Excalibur Special (Red) for this mint Gibson LP Studio PP + Cash from a collector in Angeles City.
Not lately. With the current market you can already get a Mayones, Carvin and a used PRS which has better build and specs than the new Gibsons.
+1
Gibson quality has, sadly, been on the decline for some years now. Unless you go full on Custom-shop, QC is really hit and miss. If you find a good Gibson, it's a keeper.
It's a buyer's market out there in the wild. Excellent choices overall for the money, even to buy slightly used guitars in near-mint to mint condition is a better bargain than buying new.
Go to any used guitar shop in Japan and you'll find an abundance of nice clean gits with very good price. Haggle at your leisure, they're more than likely to accept. Check Ebay , TONS of affordable axes. The only problem is 'how to get it shipped' to PI.

the vintage nut in me says to keep it as it is, which means looking for a replacement pickguard - either for an original one or have one fabricated.
ive scoured ebay and the web for one and found ONE - yes, ONE - which was outrageously priced. Needless to say, I aint going that path. They are notorious for breaking apart over time which explains why there arent many around.
the next best choice is to have one fabbed. however, this is not your typical flat pickguard that can be simply cut out of a piece of plastic.
so on the other hand, im contemplating on converting it into a ES125T with a single P90 on neck. I dont care if it would be missing another F-hole, such as:
will i regret it later on? it will lose its resale value (not that this has enormous sale value). although i plan to have all routing (volume/tone pots, P90) be done where, should i eventually acquire a pickguard and attach it, will cover all of them, as if they werent done.
or someone take* this from me before I commit the unthinakble with it.
*buy it

I recently tested a 2016 Gibson Faded T over sa Crescendo Robinsons Magnolia last night and eto mga observations ko. I will be comparing it on my 2007 Gibson Les Paul Standard with 50s Neck (all stock).
Price: 49,999 Pesos ($799 - $850 US price)
They have 2 colors avaialble (Red and Sunburst). I tested the red one. No case...just gig bag.
Build Quality: First time to try a satin finished guitar. Weight isn't an issue. Magaan sya. The neck feels great. Sabi sa specs its a '59 rounded neck profile. Set-up was ok for me. Not to high and not too low. Pwede na sya gamitin sa gig. Frets were ok but they were not smooth on the edges. My LP have "school bus" frets and smooth edges Knobs feels like PRS SE knobs. Pickup selector switch was ok. First time to try a guitar with a satin finish. Felt weird. :-D
Sounds: Compared to the BB V's (precursor to the BB Pro's) on my LP, Medyo bright sounding pickups yung BB Pro's na naka install. Wala akong pick so i just played aggressive fingerstyle and i think ok sya for country chicken pickin' sounds. Medyo mabilis ang volume drop sa volume knobs and hindi naka "treble bleed". But if you always play with the knobs on 10, this shouldn't be an issue. Wasn't able to play with the tone knobs though. My LP doesn't lose significant high end frequencies pag binawasan yung volume so i guess mine has a stock "treble bleed" wiring.
Overall Impression: Some mods on this guitar could turn it from good to really good. :-)

Lengthy post ahead!
I finally got my Historic Makeovers retrospec inlays and I installed them on my 2005 Gibson Les Paul Classic. The stock yellow green ones always bothered me and here's how I did the inlay change.
Here's a fitted inlay. (http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b288/iske123/Gibson%20Les%20Paul%20Classic%20inlay%20change/IMG_2780_zpsiqerk0px.jpg) (http://s21.photobucket.com/user/iske123/media/Gibson%20Les%20Paul%20Classic%20inlay%20change/IMG_2780_zpsiqerk0px.jpg.html)
I removed the inlays using a heat gun until they were soft enough to be pried from the cavity. Then I cleaned the cavities using a wood chisel.
Created a makeshift 12" radius sanding block and shaped the inlays before fitting them to the guitar. This step saves you a ton of time when getting those inlays flush with the guitar.
I used a razorblade to get the inlays flush with the board coupled with increasing grits of sandpaper. I then drop filled the inlays with super glue. This step is key for that seamless look.
Here's the end result. I'm pretty proud of what I achieved here. I was initially planning on having these babies installed but I figured what the heck and went ahead and installed them myself.
Care to share how you made your 12" radius diy sanding block? TIA
You won't believe this but I used the side of a Human Nature shampoo bottle. The side of the said bottle has an exact radius of 12". :)

Question brods,
As we all know, Gibson LP is one of the most versatile and high-end guitars since it started way back in post WW2 days. Do you, as a Gibson user, most specifically the LP model, still replace the stock pick-ups that comes with it? Or you're satisfied and thinks that there's no need to do so since Gibson pick-ups are already one of the best ones?

Let's wait for the gurus to answer this...
For me, I prefer 50's wiring with stock pickups. But, then again I haven't tried swapping one out.

i have two gibson lp's with 490r/498t and classic 57 respectively. never cared to replace them. the only upgrade I did is to change them to 50's wiring and PIO caps.
IMHO, the subtle difference between aftermarket pickups and stock pickups can be fine tuned by using EQ.

I bought a Gibson 2014 LPJ in Cherry Satin after looking for an SG in all Swee Lee branches in Singapore. It was at the last branch that we visited that I saw this sweet-looking guitar just when I was about to give up. I gave it a try and the rest was history. It's a proper Les Paul without the frills. I really like the 50's profile neck as well (similar to my Fender '52 Vintage Reissue Telecaster neck profile). Best bang for the buck!

Thanks.
Tried it before. It's too modern for a "traditional". The 2017 trads imo are better. With the stock abr1 and all(though with the nashville bushing). needs the poker chip to complete the look though.

Liquid nail i think. The luthier did the repair, I just stained and applied nitro. And some relic'ing to match the age of the finish.

This is whats stopping me from buying a once in a lifetime dream Gibson guitar. That damned neck break.
Im starting to warm up to Epiphone versions.
I have 2 les paul special. The 97 with the break has a thinner headstock compared to my 05 (no break).

This one wont leave me alone. GAS is bubbling. What can you say about the Memphis 2015.
57 pick ups are cool, added wood on the neck angle and can live with indigo blue. Skinny slim profile though, would have loved a meatier one.

So boys and girls...i guess nakita nyo na yung mga NAMM 2019 videos about the revamped line of Gibson guitars. Ano tingin nyo?
I can't wait to try the 50's Les Paul kasi gusto ko malaman kung gaano sya kabigat. Hindi daw chambered body e. And i want to feel the neck kasi sabi '59 rounded neck daw. 50's neck profile yung Les Paul ko pero i don't think it's the 59 rounded. Mid of 2019 daw sya irerelease so i hope when i get to travel again to the US or Japan later this year maka subok ako.
...and that cherry red Gibson SG na may sideways wiggle stick also caught my eye...

The updated 2019 Les Pauls have been released. $2500 for the 50's and 60's Les Paul Standard. Non weight-relieved.
Kinda similar to what Fender did to revamp its AVRI line to American Original (50's and 60's).
