Are there any venues that actually have tube amps?

Perhaps just a few. Still, just because an amp is SS doesn't mean it will suck big time  :-D

For gigging musicians, i think it is important to have an extra distortion or an overdrive pedal just to be prepared to whatever set up your going to have at whatever venue you'll be playing in a gig.

ah right! last month my looper and od pedal malfunction... after that incident, i always bring an extra pedal or 2 in my bag

That's why I use a big muff.

I'm a big fan of low wattage, single channel, class A, all tube amps. Of course, since it is a single channel, you can't step on a footswitch for an overdrive, unless it has a boost, but usually that just increases the volume.

So what I do, is I set my gain to the point where it is just a little bit crunchy. That way, if I am playing something like dirty blues or something Hendrixish, it is perfect for that. If I want to come across clean, I can just back off my volume knob on the guitar a little bit and it cleans up nicely. If I want to have some heavy overdrive, I hit my big muff and it takes me where I need to go.

You can get some pretty good "distortion" out of a big muff, but I use it strictly as an overdrive/sustainer. I'm not really into the kind of music I would need a distortion pedal for.

i use an artec soloist and it works well for my taste muffs are too muffled for my taste + an od8o8/tubezone clone to grit my cleans at times,

3 od's, no dist
and cheap ones too! i just play with the 'colors' when blending different sounding od's. i still have the trusty tube amp when im in the mood for 'disturbing' the neighbors... just crank it halfway and it will 'summon' a security guard.

why and how do we use dirt pedals anyway? do you use it because of the grit, or because of the compression? marami kasi satin love that furry, distorted tone we get from pedals, while some are simply after compression (although there are pedals na may character ng grit without too much compression).
