Title: Gundam Kits and Mods
Post by: matanglawin on December 28, 2008, 11:52:01 AM
started collecting Gundams a few years back with the Wings series. Those kits were flimsy and hollow, and my kids mangled them quick.
I stopped for a while, and restarted with the 00 series. These kits are more detailed, heavier and more articulated with more parts, so my OC hands have a lot to work on, especially with assembly, and later on, panting and modifications.
The Exia (Gundam 00), The Wing (Gundam Wing) and the Red Frame Astray (Gundam Seed Astray)

mechapinoy ata yun. try nyo guys, my brother collects and even "costomize" his gundam,(i dont know the right term basta he paints and even yun nga costomize some parts ng gundam para pogi), tapos sinasali nya sa mga contest.
he also sells gundam pwede kayo umorder sa kanya at it cost less than the price you will see sa stores. he could get i think yung wala dito or mahirap hanapin kung order kayo sa kanya...
singit ko nalng sa negosyo ni utol...text me para masabi ko sa kanya. 09228296830

how much did you invest on your gundams.. ,gaano na kamahal mga gundam ngayon?
Kits come at different sizes and grades, from 500 up. Let's just say I've inverted more time than money on these. I've slowed down on the purchases, and have now began modifications.

I don't like the Revoltech, since they are toys rather than kits, and I need top assemble and tinker with stuff rather than just simply play (else, I would have already gotten me that Daimos).
Since I started modding my Gs, I've joined two G Forums namely ZeroG and Pinoy Gundam, but I'll check Mechapinoy.
Just MGs and NGs. I haven't any PGs yet, since it's too expensive.

Lil's Hobby has a basic set (including a mini compressor methinks) for about 4k-5k, but any art shop (or even national bookstore) has basic sets that has a lower price range.

all i have left is a high grade 1/100 gundam wing with the lousy crest that falls off. hahaha. kawawa naman, nasa aparador na lang ngayon, sa loob ng box. just thought of buying one for the heck of it and for reminiscing the feel of putting the parts together.

pwede by pastels, enamel paint, dry brush, gagasgasan mo yung kit
@matanglawin: ahh akala ko both meron
Nope. I used a weathering market on the Zeta, fyi.
My Astraeas. No modifications. Used red and blue markers to "highlight" some of the parts. But these two will undergo major mods. The white Astraea will become the Omega from my Trinity Project @ PinoyGundam (the Exia is Alpha, the 00 is the Infinity), while the Astraea Type F will get the Ironman color scheme.
started collecting Gundams a few years back with the Wings series. Those kits were flimsy and hollow, and my kids mangled them quick.
I stopped for a while, and restarted with the 00 series. These kits are more detailed, heavier and more articulated with more parts, so my OC hands have a lot to work on, especially with assembly, and later on, panting and modifications.
The Exia (Gundam 00), The Wing (Gundam Wing) and the Red Frame Astray (Gundam Seed Astray)
mga magkano po kaya dun? it's an MG so i'm expecting the price to not be that low. :-(
di ko lang sure, pero alam ko kase medyo bumaba na ang price eh. last i checked nasa 2k to 3k ang range.

inquiries lang mga sir.
i've been thinking of buying the 00 gunplas. (huge 00 fan, ang lupit ng season2! sobra!)
i've been wondering, since i have this feeling na magkakaroon ng MG yung mga 00 kits, should i wait for the MG kits (even though there's no announcement/confirmation yet) or would the NG 1/100 kits out right now be enough? Ang hirap kasi makakuha ng pera ngayon, sobrang paminsan lang ako makabili ng gunplas (college student lang kasi ako, at ang hirap mag-ipon ngayon)
i'm a 1/100 collector, and i really don't buy unless it's an MG (i enjoy the inner skeleton engineering).
bought an NG Strike Freedom before at the peak of the Destiny series show run, grabe, sobrang nakakadisappoint. I bought an MG Strike Freedom some time after to redeem myself, and let's just say, it far exceeded my expectations. :-)
thanks in advance.

I actually restarted my Gundam Collection with the 00 series.
You won't be disappointed with the four s1 00s, namely the Exia, Dynames, Arios and Virtue. Though they are NGs, they are very detailed and almost like MGs in terms of articulation and build, especially the Virtue which actually becomes the Nadleeh when the armor is removed.
You might want to hold off on the s2 00s, though the kits are nice, the articulation and details aren't really that nice, at least for me. But it's actually the 00 that started me on modifications and painting, because of that wretched lack of articulation. A lot of people are speculation that it would be the 00 and the Bushido that will have the MG or PG treatment.
Like you, I was gearing on MG only, but currently I find that getting some of the 1/144 HGUCs is also a treat, if only to pass a little bit of time, so Far, I have 3 HGUCs, and I bought the HG Wing Zero Custom since I was feeling a bit nostalgic aside from the fact that it was on sale.
Bit I do recommend getting the Sinanju. Mine's coming this weekend, at a considerably lower price.

ah talaga? s1 00 gunplas > s2 00 gunplas? yup, I've heard of the lack of articulation on the 00, on the waist right? I heard it was for the 0-Raiser, para macarry and support daw niya. Grabe eh, nung makita ko yung 00-Raiser on a Celestial Being Stand, ang ganda kasi idisplay, I just had to ask for inquiries. Thanks Sir! baka mag hold-off nalang muna ako, maybe if may extra extra cash ako, dun nalang ako bibilli ng NG 00's. :-)

Ayos to sir ah!! scratch built ba tong rx78 or may kit talaga na ganyan?

It's an actual kit using the RX78-2 frame.

That's a pretty rare kit, Char's RX-78. Though the Sazabi and the Sinanju are similar (since they are both piloted by Char), I find the Sinanju more menacing. That doesn't mean that I won't be getting at least an HGUC Sazabi.

It's a different time/storyline based on the Manga. The Pilot's name is Full Frontal, but he is actually Char.
Quote
The dark unicorn is model # 2 (yes they made 2) that is undergoing atmospheric testing on earth. It was revealed early in the 2nd or 3rd chapter of the novel during an interrogation by the Feds on some engineer of the unicorn project. Somehow this was over sighted by a lot of people that read the novel and is not even in the wiki.
Full Frontal is Char, the real Char. The Char we all knew as Char is not actually Char but Casaval son of Zeon Zum Deikun. Read gundam origin manga vol 7 to 11 it talked about Casaval's childhood after his father is murdered by the Zabi family and how he and "Sailor Mars" was smuggled out of side 3 by the aid of Ramba Ral. Casaval's child/teen hood was lived under constant threat of death by the Zabi family. He was later adopted into the Aznable family where they have a son Char Aznable that looks very much like Casaval. To plot his revenge, Casaval tricked Char into switching identity with him (something about being late to catch a plane / space shuttle). The Zabi family thought Char is Casaval and bombed the plane / space shuttle. Casaval toke on the Char Aznable alias and the rest is history. Only the real Char Aznable didn't die from the bombing, and emerged as full frontal in the unicorn story line. Not much else has been revealed yet based on where I'm at the novel.

There's Lil's, Megamall and Park Square, Great Toys at Greenhills and WalterMart Makati. Great Toys offer the best price and often have 5-10 percent all year round, especially if you buy constantly from them and get to know the shopkeepers. I also get "direct" through a guy who orders in bulk online.

Thanks. It depends, actually. It takes me long especially when I do modifications and scratchbuilds because I tend to think more on what to do and how to do it and work slow on the building. Once I start painting, It's only a matter of days. A simple ootb assembly takes a matter of hours to a couple of days.

This particular kit is part of a GroupBuild that will have a Photo Day Meet in March. Maybe then.

There's a couple of Nath's I've come across, and both are quite good. One, I think, won the BAKUC a few years back.

Anu ba alternative na marker para sa panel lines? Yung nadownload kong magazine ng Gundam 00 eh may guide pero japanese, nakita ko pa hinihiwa ng blade yung panel lines.

That's scribing additional panel lines, or rescribing shallow ones or those otherwise became shallow during sanding. Personally, I've used gundam markers and regular fine point art pens, but, I found tech pens and panel wash better alternatives depending on the effect I am after.

matanglawin, i'm planning on buying and putting up a kit. though i'm a noob when it comes to this, i had previous experience with scale models. i used to help my dad back then. he's an architectural scale-model builder; and i got the tools. we used to work with acrylic sheets and build scale models from blank. where do i start? do i buy a 1:144 or mag 1:100 na ako? MG or HG nalang muna? suggest ka na rin ng mga models na maganda. thanks in advance. :-)

Depending on which model you'd want to start on, 1/144 HGUCs are fast becoming at par with certain entry-level MGs. Personally, though, I prefer larger scale MGs, though I do have a few HGUCs, like the Triya. The NG Exia is actually impressive with the detail put into it.
The thing is, regardless of the grade, get what you like most. You can always assess the detail if you go purchase at Great Toys or other stores that allow you to peek into the boxes.

Hmmm. I'm not sure I'll be objective. I'm not much of a Seed fan, hence I don't have those three even though I'm partial to anything RED. The Strike should be a good choice, though (('m planning to get an MG Strike in the Future, and I do have a Strike Noir). The Overflag is too simple for my taste.

they're selling the HG Aile Strike sa toytown for 1.2k. magkano ba aabutin yung MG version? take note that this is my first kit. it's more of a test kung kaya kong bumuo ng kit na maayos - a noob attempt. don't you think i'm getting ahead of myself kung MG agad ang bibilhin ko? :-D

nope, from experience, you'll just regret buying the HG 1/100. Madali lang ibuo yung MG Aile Strike! Mag-eenjoy ka pa sa pagbuo nung skeleton. Trust me on this. after mo siya ibuo, idisplay and ingatan mo muna.
once you feel confident enough, in the future, pag feel mo kaya mo na, that's when you paint, decalize and topcoat your MG Aile Strike. ito na kasi yung mejo advanced. ang kelangan talaga is yung "just do it" attitude sa paggawa nito. :-)

anu ba mas maganda? buuin muna yung kit bago lagyan ng paint? i mean yung mga parts bago icombine?
It's always ideal to snap build it first before making any modifications or painting it. In most cases, seam line removal is essential

There are plenty of tutorials on general Gundam building online, including seamline removal, modifications and painting. I do have some in the forums I go to.
If you want, you can check out http://pinoygundam.proboards.com/index.cgi, http://forum.zerogunz.com and http://plamo.outthere.info/forum/index.php. These three are by far the friendliest forums where they don't grind you too much for being a newbie. I'm known there as MatanglawinX or MatX.

The Tall Geese, afaik, is white. You can always recolor it based on what you like. If you're using spray cans, RJ London flat white instead of Pylox. Flat paints are basically primers. Personally, I use flat black for most of my priming, since it can also serve as base color if I intend to use black. Try to read up on tutorials first before committing to painting since Seamline removal is the most essential and most important basic skill you need to learn first before one even does a paint job. Sometimes, a nicely done ootb already looks good, even without paint.

You can also try http://www.mechapinoy.net/forum. I know MatX has issues with this forum (it's my home forum, since I am a founder of the original Mechapinoy Mailing List that was an offshoot of the original international Gundam Mailing List more than a decade ago), and I agree with him that sometimes, n00bs (different from newbies) do get rough treatment. However, as long as you read the rules of the forum beforehand and spend some time observing the way to properly interact within it, interacting in Mechapinoy can be a pleasant experience.
There are many tutorials in the forum, ranging from spraycan usage, handbrushing and airbrushing to sealing, modifying and scratchbuilding. There are also threads for works in progress, and finished kitbuilds. Some of these are from past winners in national and international competitions, with many of the others being from extremely talented builders (some of them practically professionals).
Mechapinoy also has the monthly MechaMeet, where people can trade or sell kits to each other, socialize and work on kits (and get tips on how to work their kits).
Finally, Mechapinoy is one of the main fan organizations connected officially with Bankee, the official distributor of Bandai (gundam) in the country. As such, if you've seen the Gundams on exhibit in the various malls...those are probably from Mechapinoy members (I'm an exhibitor for most of the events).
We hope to see you in the forums, cheers!

Go to Great Toys Online, they have branches at WalterMart Makati, Alabang Festival Mall, And Greenhills Virra Mall. Aside from having lower prices, they also have 5 percent discount if you ask nicely, and occasional 10-15 per cent discount when the owner has a sale.

If you can wait a bit more, my suggestion is to inquire at http://www.wasabitoys.com/, and no worries, they have a store right next to Greattoys' in Greenhills.
The item pages for what you are looking for are as follows: http://www.wasabitoys.com/product.asp?productcode=1811 http://www.wasabitoys.com/product.asp?productcode=1810
Not sure if these pages are being updated, but apparently, the MG Strike Freedom Full Burst version was included in the shipments for last Feb. 11. Though this is the more expensive version, given Wasabi Toys' general pricing system, it might be well worth it.
You can also contact them at 0927-3294434. Cheers!

There's also Lil's Hobby center, at SM Mega, Trinoma and Park Square, though they have limited slections. There's also Best Toys. Both have slightly higher price points than GT.
Also, if you join the local forums (PunoyGundam, MechaPinoy, GreatToysOnline Forum), look for M1gs in the For sale section. He orders direct at competitive pricing and can get you the launch promo items and rare inclusions (like the PG 00 clear parts) etc. earlier than most stores.

Weathering for Gundams has been a heated topic in some quarters, with some arguing for the armor style of weathering, and for others the aircraft style. Some people base it on how the gundam is used (i.e.: 08thMS team gundams, which are basically land units, get a more tank-ish treatment, but space, flight and fast attack units normally have more of an aircraft feel).
Though you have to register, here are threads that can help you:
You can also try FichtenFoo's forum. He's Michael Fichtenmayer, and he's won quite a few IPMS contests with some of his works. He's got a whole subforum for finishes, decals and weathering: http://fichtenfoo.net/forum/index.php?board=24.0
You can also try the local IPMS forum for works that are proudly pinoy: http://ipmsphilippines.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27&sid=330a96d78feec5ecf5ec00d8016a9eb7

So i thought why not try it out on my V gundam since i just bought a set of Gundam "Weathering Markers" tapos nakita ko rin ung mga custom builds ng mga hobbyists sa exhibits around malls.
I did this around 2003
a reference for those interested in those battle scarred poseable figures.

1/100 kits without grade indicators are simply known as NGs or No-Grades, but they are basically 1/100 HGs, to deliniate them from the older 1/100 HGs (like the older Wing/Endless Waltz Series). These newer version NGs are produced with better molds and often have semi-complete pseudo frames and are in the middle of HGs and MGs in terms of detail and complexity. The HG label are now exclusively used for 1/144 scales.
This is how far I have gone with The Angelus (Sinanju).

The Grand Prize is an MG The O, the First Prize in Individual Categories (Straight build, Modifications, Diorama, Video) is an MG V Dash, and the Runners-Up get an RG RX78-2. Don and I didn't even know we've won. He was told by one of his blog readers, and I found out through his post at MAC Forums. We still haven't received any notifications that we've won, or how to claim our Prizes, but, I'll give it till this week before I follow up.

pretty awesome stuff there!
haha, man I've had zero luck in getting an HG 00 Qan[T]. but then I wondered, maybe I should skip the HG 00Q and wait until the inevitable post-movie upgrade model with new parts XD parang 00 Raiser lang haha. then again I could be wrong.

I like the S1 00 Mechas, including the GN-X, and the Arios. The rest, including the movie versions either look overdone or underdone. I kinda like the Qan[T], but was disappointed how the HG turned out. I was actually building a 1/100 version, but put the project on hold because of the HG. I might restart it, but this time, I'll make the prototype Q[T] or making something different altogether.

I still have an unbuilt exia ignition. I like the working GN drive of this kit + repair mode.

@matanglawin - cool! I've seen a lot of custom 00Q models since, it really is pretty similar to the 00 Raiser.
@gwenmoyk - I thought of buying the regular MG Exia once and just painting the blade parts chrome to make it look like the Ignition Mode set, pero yeah wala lang nga akong GN Drive :P
I heard bandai announced a new Gundam 00 MG for November ah! My gut tells me if it's not an Exia R2 (which would be another really cheap move on Bandai's part), it'll be the 00 Raiser.
Then again they could release a partner to the MG Exia, maybe the Virtue :-D

Yes and no. the prototype Q[T] (right) is a combination of the Exia, 00 and the GnX, while the Final version is a combination of the Exia and the 00. I like the prototype version more.

I built one for the GNX for almost nothing but a few pieces of pla plates, some cement, and elbow grease. Paying for a P1400 set is too impractical.
(http://I heard bandai announced a new Gundam 00 MG for November ah! My gut tells me if it's not an Exia R2 (which would be another really cheap move on Bandai's part), it'll be the 00 Raiser.)
The repair II is actually the same as the original Exia, only fully repaired. I think the only addition there is the GN Sword Kai, which is an improved version of the original GN Sword.

I'm hoping it's the Dynames, if we're to follow Bandai's pattern with the MG Wing and Deathscythe's release. But the virtue would be a nice one to MGfy. It'll be one expensive MG though.

I think sir matanglawin has a led mod tutorial doc. Maybe you can light up the gn drive of a regular exia.

@gwenmoyk - they've done a lot of transformable MS naman ah, the most recent I can think of is V Gundam and Wing Gundam. Heck the next MG after The O, the ReZel is gonna be transformable too.
I'm hoping its the Virtue if they're going for a season 1 MS, pero it'll probably be really expensive.
@matanglawin - ahh, looks like an easy enough led mod, I'll research that out once I get my hands on an Exia. Nice pic of the prototype 00Q

The Zeta Series (Zeta, ZZ, Zeta A1, Zeta C1, FAZZ) are transformable and they all have MG counterparts. There's also the Bawoo, the Epyon and of course, The Wing.

The FAZZ actually means Full Armor ZZ. The Full Armor Gundam is an armored RX78. The ZZ and the FAZZ are not full transformables (they don't have wave rider modes), but they both have corefighters.

Paints have slightly different formulations between brands and might behave/react differently or even have slight tonal differences. So, if this concern is regarding consistency, better use the same brand on a project. Mr Color is a good alternative to Tamiya colors, but not necessarily cheaper.
As for weapons, Kotobukiya has weapon sets that can be used for Gundams. Check out Lil's Hobby at Park Square. They have a few sets available.

There are a few other shops that carry Mr Color and other paint brands. There's JMN's hobby at Harrison Plaza, and STC at Farmers and Greenhills.

That's one way of checking for color accuracy. Manuals also have color indicators, but, again, paint might not be consistent across the board, especially if you mix your own. So, it's always best to mix in batches.
Personally, I prefer cans, despite the limited color choices, because of the convenience.

They're talking about the 90% alchohol which is plastic safe. Industrial thinners are too strong and can melt plastics. Acrylic paints are water soluble so you can use (ideally) distilled water to rehydrate dried paints, enamels are oil based, so you have no choice but to get hobby grade enamel thinners to be on the safe side.

It should be on the label. all brands have both types i suppose.

If you have it already, try. It shouldn't be too much of an incompatibility so as long as your using the appropriate paint type with the appropriate thinner.
But, and this is not a straightforward rule, it's always better to use Tamiya with Tamiya, etc.

Great! thanks sir! I went to your site and sa w a tutorial (multi layered colors) and read that you used some bosny, an acrylic epoxy. I don't use pylox so I can't give you an objective opinion of it. Bosny top coats are actually sufficient (and cheaper) and now preferred by most local modelers I know
Read this regarding the paint type I use: http://mxgs.blogspot.com/2010/07/misconceptions-about-paints.html
These are automotive paints. The epoxy actually gives the paint finish strength and resistance from light scratches and doesn't peel like normal paint. They can actually be left as is without top coat, but we do top coat for that extra protection. (I prefer flat coats mostly nowadays.)
Paint peels overtime when the paint job wasn't done properly, bad paint combination, or if there are residual oils on the surface. The kits I painted with Bosny paints have actually stood well in room temperature and normal humidity.

Stock-wise, the feet and the backpack are blue, the frame is dark gray, and the the "pinkish" color is the psychoframe is supposed to be red. It's dark pink to simulate being lit up. I'll be painting it dark red with a gold buffer, while most of the kit would be painted as is.

As far as I know, there's no 0.8mm. I use 0.3, 0.5 (each at P75 per sheet), and 1.0 (P150). There are thicker plaplates (1.2, 1.5 and 1.7) at P350 per sheet, at lil's hobby.

I hardly use putty to hide gaps or seamline. There's the usual way of applying cement first to adjoining parts then sanding it later on, and there's presanding.

also i came across a cam of Pylox clear coat was wondering if it could replace the tamiya clear coat?
Pylox is lacquer based while Tamiya is acrylic. Don't use lacquer over acrylic cause it will eat into the acrylic base and/or cause cracking.
Ideally, if you use acrylics, then all paints and primers should be acrylic based so you can avoid paint adhesion problems as well as cracking. If you do need to mix paints, it should be lacquer as the lowest coat, enamels over that, and acrylic as topmost coat. It also helps that lacquers and enamels be dried for at least 2 days so that you prevent paint cracking over the topmost coat or clearcoat. Personally, I prefer to use Tamiya primers or Gunze surfacers for the bottom/initial coat so that the later color coats will adhere. One more thing, also wash the plastic with dishwashing soap before painting to remove molding agents. his will ensure proper adhesion of all paint coats.
TIP: A good clear gloss coat is Pledge's Future floor polish which is acrylic based. I was lucky enough to buy a couple of bottles in a hardware store in ATC and these will last you through tens of models, if not a hundred per bottle.
Not a Gundam modeler, unfortunately, but I do WWII German aircraft and jets in scales of 1/48 and above.

Stay away from that esp. if it's the milky colored one. The Future I got (clear colored) is what's usually recommended in FSM and you can airbrush it straight from the bottle. I was searching for this product locally for ages and I got lucky here in ATC - even my sis in NYC never heard of the product. I like how you can dip clear parts into Future and it removes scratches without need for polishing, plus it makes a great clear coat for decals, before and after application (it prevents silvering). Been unsuccessfully using various clear coats like Testors and Tamiya previously, but Future was like a godsend.

My last build was an F-18 but then I discovered the art of scribing, resin parts and adding details. That extended my build time considerably leading to a LOT of suspended builds.
I'm not into contests, but when I finish my B-58 or even the B-1B (a huge kit at 3 feet long), I might seriously consider entering it. Used to be painting and weathering was a major concern, now we got techniques like filtering and preshading and that's gonna add more manhours. :|
I wonder if I can translate my aircraft painting skills into a battered, battle-weary Gundam... tried building one for a nephew once, but it was strictly OOBE. Knowing how I build, I would go all OC trying to hide the seams.

The last plane I built was a F-14 Tomcat and that was way way back in high school, so thats a long time. I think with Gundams, there are a lot of options in terms of details and color but still, i'm no expert, I haven't even built one yet hehehe. Hopefully I can start specially now, I have a lot of spare time but I still have to travel to Manila to start. Hopefully some members can help me on how to paint it hehehe.

I wonder if I can translate my aircraft painting skills into a battered, battle-weary Gundam... tried building one for a nephew once, but it was strictly OOBE. Knowing how I build, I would go all OC trying to hide the seams.
A lot of Gundam modelers do refer to scale modeling techniques, especially with weathering and dio building. I might get into scale modeling again myself.
I like the Gundam Freedom, is it a good start??? Any suggestions???
I don't like the Seed series too much, except for the Red Frame. Kit-wise, the Freedom is as good a kit as any, but The Strike would be a better option.

The Strike??? Why the Strike? I just want an idea why you suggested that specific model. Thanks for the suggestion by the way.

The Strike is deemed to be one of the well-proportioned MS in the Gundam series. I do believe it looks good, objectively speaking, but I don't like it personally for some reason I can't fathom. Don't get me wrong, I do get kits even if I don't like them, like the Unicorn, for example, mainly because I think I can do something else with them.
I'd probably get the Strike for a special build I'm planning.
If not, you can also try getting the MG Exia. It's one of my favorite kits.

I'm a SEED fan! I really liked Gundam SEED, though sobrang walang kwenta yung SEED DESTINY (parang season 2 ng SEED). HAHAHAH!
As such, I have many MGs from the SEED line. (magpopost rin siguro ako ng pics after some time) What I really admire about the SEED series are the proportions. All models from the line were designed by Hajime Katoki, para sakin siya talaga pinakamagaling na mag proportion sa mga MGs, all of the models he designs look sleek and sexy, hindi mukhang square and blocks/chubby. Pagdating sa MG engineering, 2004 pa yung Strike and Freedom, so yung engineering niya is what was best at that time (6 years ago). Regardless, maganda parin talaga yung SEED MGs! I say go for it.
I have the ff: MG Strike MG Freedom MG Strike Freedom MG Infinite Justice
Medyo mahahalata mo yung difference ng inner frame engineering nung mga models dahil sa tagal ng agwat nung pagkarelease ng mga ito. Yung Strike Freedom at Inf. Justice a few years back lang nirelease, sobrang ganda nung pagkakagawa sa kanila, makes you really admire the work done on these kits.
For reviews and all, check this site out www.dalong.net it's in another language pero madali lang intindihin dahil sa pictures. Rinereview niya mga good and bad points nung kits, like mobility, craftsmanship and such. Good luck!

Here are my MGs, all of them painted, panel-lined, decaled and flat topcoated. Puro Seed, as of now kasi, I've stopped from collecting Gunpla, focus muna sa gear.
MG Aile Strike (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/omnicloud7/DSC07109.jpg) (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/omnicloud7/DSC07110.jpg) (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/omnicloud7/DSC07108.jpg) (http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e50/omnicloud7/DSC07112.jpg)
And yeahp, you can guess, I'm a fan of Kira. I like how his suits have all these guns, but they're only used for disabling opponents. He never kills his foe! Got the MG IJ 'cos I also came to like Athrun's character too.

Astig Man!!! Kakainggit hehehe. Hopefully soon I can start with my first Gundam kit.
By the way, I just want to ask if do you sand the parts you will be painting or you can just paint right away? First time painting a kit if ever hehehe...
Another question, is there by any chance that there are stores selling Gundam kits around Alabang area? Thanks...

There's Special Toy Center and Great Toys at Festival Mall and ATC (just not sure which is which). There's also Gundam kits available at Toy Kingdom and Toys R Us.
As for painting, you don't really need to sand too much except the areas where the nubs are, and do prime the surface. Sanding everything though, is a better practice.

Thanks! It's been a really long while since I've acquired a new kit. Namiss ko nga eh when I took those shots, medyo kinailangan ko pa ibrush ng konti yung mga models kasi inaalikabok na. For me, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. After painting the kits, I sand down the joints and connectors. Kumakapal kasi sila, kaya paminsan humihigpit or hindi na sila perfect fit kapag ni-assemble mo na.
All my kits are from Festival Mall! May Great Toys sa Festi sa 2nd floor. Ok na ok dun! Madalas mag discount at mas mura sa kanila kesa sa mga Toy Kingdom/Toys'R'Us/Toy Town.
Sa Festi meron ding Special Toy Center, that's where I get my paints, topcoats(though after a while, I switched to Bosny Topcoats which can be bought at any ACE hardware stores) and panel markers. Nasa Festival talaga lahat ng kailangan mo para magstart mag Gunpla.

Negative, wala ng Gundams in ATC except for Toys'R'Us, which we all know overprices Gunplas. Yung Special Toy Center ng ATC napalitan na ng Aloha Boardshorts for quite some time already.

That would be Great Toys. And yes, the kits are cheaper there than in TK or TRU. We also have someone in the local Gunpla community who gets them online.

It will depend on your taste and skill later on. Hand brushing has its limitations since in most cases consistency is an issue. Spray can painting works for some, like myself, and gives a more consistent color spread, but is limited in terms of color choices. Most prefer to use air brush.

Hmm, tough question there. I guess when it comes to the Gundam itself, I like the Freedom more (of course I like the SF very much too) because of the so many things it has done in the show, also being Kira's longest Gundam used. However, in terms of the model kit, I'd definitely pick the SF, mas maganda yung pagkakagawa sa SF because it was released(2006) I believe two years after MG Freedom(2004).

MGs range from 1.5K to 5K or even more, depending on the complexity of a kit. The Aile/Launcher Strike pack is about 2.5K or so. The Sinanju (my favorite) is about 3.8K. I got another one half built for 2.5K.
PGs technically have more detail and thus more parts, and are bigger. The cheapest go for 6K (older PGs) and the most recent ones go to as much as 15-18K.
@matanglawin: wow you can do it also sa wood pwede ba ko magpagawa sayo combination ng voltron at gundam kits and mods? hehehe
Mahal ako maningil, especially if it's a sculpture. And although I can work with wood, I prefer working on a kit and transforming it to what I want. Wood also takes longer to shape.
Anyways, I don;t accept commission jobs as of yet. I work slow, and have a few projects on my plate.

Pag wla dun ung hanap mo sa best toys naman sa virra mall kaso mahal ng konte dun sa dalawa. Wag ka bibili sa toy kingdom or toys r us. Sobrang laki ng patong, about 500 to 800 pesos. It has what we call a double V-fin, do technically, it has 4 horns (plus, the remaining stub of the Unicorn horn). And yes, it's no longer the Unicorn, but the Chimera.
Check out the build progress at my blog http://mxgs.blogspot.com/
Now that's the kind of weathering that interests me. About time I deviated from aircraft.
Maybe, just maybe...
We have Gunpla modelers who can do that kind of weathering and even battle damage, applying scale modeling techniques.

I get it from a friend who orders it at rainbow10 for 950 smackers. I have an order I still have to claim.
You can contact him directly through http://www.facebook.com/xander.xinger?v=app_2309869772#!/migsnoel. He orders weekly, and depending on the volume, also meets up weekly for the orders.
Or, if you really need it, I can sell you my pending order (the Kosutte is a bit rare, and I won't be needing the new batch).

Bought my very first Gundam today at Great Toys, Festival Mall and all the people there are friendly. I was looking for the Strike Gundam but when I saw the Shin Musha Gundam, it was like calling me and asking me to bring it home hahaha. So, I got the MG Shin Musha Gundam...
I just want to ask, what gold paint should I use? The gold pieces are not really gold, I want it more gold and shine like the chrome sword. Thanks in advance...

I use Flat black as base and primer, then Bosny 351 Gold, then gloss clear to make it shine The result is a bit grainy for others, but is just fine with me.
If you have an Airbrush, you can try the Tamiya or Mr Hobby paints, but I'm not quite sure how shiny they are.
There's also Alclad chrome then transparent yellow + orange to simulate gold.

Flat Black, specifically. In fact, I use Flat Black as a general purpose primer and base, then use gold, silver or aluminum as buffer for the transparent to layer.
Since this is your first kit, I'd suggest you try spray cans (I'm a bit bias since I have been using cans and have "perfected" a technique for it and I'm practically considered as a "spray can expert" by some), but I did hand brush frames before. The drawback of handbrushing is the the unevenness of the strokes and brush marks, so you might want to try that later on after you have had practice. For handbrushing, enamels are the paint of choice.
Spray cans, though convenient, are a bit tricky to use because one cannot adjust the spray area and strength, so it may take a while for you to get used to how it behaves. Also, spray cans change behavior specifically midway as the pressure in the can decreases.
Check out my blog http://mxgs.blogspot.com. I've got a few tutorials there you might be able to use, as well as links to other blogs you might find useful. You might also like to visit out MAC Forum at http://s3.zetaboards.com/MACforums and check out how others do it.

Thanks man, this has been a big help. Good blog by the way. So you use either Bosny or RJ London paints and its an Acrylic Expoxy Lacquer Paints. Got it, very cool. Does Ace hardware sell this paints? Another thing with spray painting, do I still have to use Flat Black as a base or I can just go straight to the main color. Very noob questions hahaha... Thank you very much again Man...

Whoah! Thats what im talking about! Nice haul sir moderator. Told you, its a beautiful kit...
Btw, how much? does it cost you 3k+ ?
Target next the red frame astray.
Thanks. I was actually expecting it to be around 3k+ but the price on the box was 2,880 and since they have a sale, I got it for 2,590. I saw two boxes of Shin Mishu Gundam at the store but they have different prices. So I asked the difference. The expensive one had an additional platform, a background with Japanese Samurai era design and a sword rack but the price was almost double on what I got. So, I took the cheaper one hehehe. I was looking for the Red Astray but they run out of stock. I was also looking at the MG Strike Gundam but I still have to check with the big boss if I could buy it tomorrow hahaha.

I've been using mostly Bosny for most my painting needs and I get them from local hardware stores since they are much cheaper as compared to any mall hardware, and specific RJ London colors (RJ, sad to say, is not carried by local hardware stores). Regular Bosny/RJ colors sell around 150++ per can at malls, with metallics and special blends around 200 and above. Bosny sells at only 90 to 110 at local stores.
I also have a few bottles of Tamiya acrylics and enamels (Lil's Hobby), for highlighting/wash panel lining, and cheap Semco acrylics (available at National) for general purpose use..

In my experience, I'd rather prime it first with Flat black, and I've recently started using grey primer. Certain paint colors don't adhere readily without priming the surface, and you'll get that paint accumulating or flooding nooks and crannies.
With cans, you would have to remind to control your bursts because new cans especially spurt out paint like a man having a premature ejack, pardon the analogy. You will also have to get used to layering and misting at a distance, and you'll need plenty of patience NOT to saturate what you are painting. Spray painting should be gradual, even with an AB. I've learned the hard way when I was just starting when I sprayed parts point blank.
Also, you'll need to get a few tools, like side cutters, knives and such. I also have those at my blog.

Since the quality if the plastic is essential, getting original is still always better. Bootleg kits are made of very low quality plastic, are often brittle, and damage easily, not to mention the alignment of connective parts are often an issue.

I tried researching for the paints I need for my Shin Musha Gundam Project and I found the colors I need, the only downfall was it was expensive at handyman. I'll just check with a hardware store near our place before I go back to Puerto Galera and back to work hahaha...

Two things: You can use a 0.1/0.2/0.3 technical pen instead and/or make the lines deeper (you'll need a scriber) and/or the intermediate method of wash panel lining.
Personally, I've stopped using Gundam Markers for panel lining since the nibs dull and dry out fast.

I use cotton buds moistened with water (or, if painted with acrylic, moistened with enamel thinner). That should remove the excesses, at least in my case.

Any harm on using acetone?
Title: Re: Gundam Kits and Mods
Post by: matanglawin on November 11, 2010, 01:45:10 AM
I haven't tried acetone, but, afaik acetone is a very strong solvent that can melt certain plastics (specifically polystyrene, which is what kit armor is made of) and can definitely melt acrylic paint. You'll be safer with lighter fluid (most people use it for wash as an alternative to enamel thinner).

I've always used Rotring, even during college days, but, that's a personal preference. Objectively Staedler's good too.

Enamel thinner won't affect Bosny paints. In my experience, I've used enamel wash directly over non-topcoated acrylic paint, but it's always safer and "cleaner" when the surface is topcoated. Bosny is Acrylic Epoxy Lacquer which is something sort of "impossible" to some people because they don't believe acrylics and lacquers don't mix.
I posted something related to this at my blog, and I quote myself:
Quote
Misconceptions about Paint (http://mxgs.blogspot.com/2010/07/misconceptions-about-paints.html)
I was posting very frequently in several forums a while back and the most common question I get when it comes to painting is "What paint do you use?" My usual response was "I use Bosny and/or RJ London paints, and they are basically Acrylic Epoxy Lacquer Paints. In the modeling arena, people only know either Lacquer, Enamel, or Acrylic paints, and seeing a paint type like Acrylic Epoxy Lacquer was a bit of a stretch. In one such forum, one even told me to make up my mind if I was using either Lacquer or Acrylic because that person couldn't quite accept having both in the same paint (even after showing the label), and another one even said that "Epoxies" are two part glues that can't be added in spray can paints. One thought that it might just be regional naming conventions because I was living in the Philippines. To quote him verbatim:
"Maybe It has to do with your country's use of english, As the definition of lacquer is a mixture of natural resin and pigment ( modern day we use chemicals). Comes from the Portuguese word lac, and they used it long ago as an alternative to tempera. And I have never seen the term epoxy used like that.
Again I am not trying to tell you your wrong, as it seems like our countries must use the words differently."
The thing is, Bosny and RJ London are European formulas manufactured in Thailand.
Definitions-wise:
"1673, from Fr. lacre "a kind of sealing wax," from Port. lacre, unexplained variant of lacca "resinous substance," from Arabic lakk, from Pers. lak (see lac). The verb meaning "to cover or coat with laqueur" is from 1688."
From Dictionary.com:
–noun 1. a protective coating consisting of a resin, cellulose ester, or both, dissolved in a volatile solvent, sometimes with pigment added. 2. any of various resinous varnishes, esp. a resinous varnish obtained from a Japanese tree, Rhus verniciflua, used to produce a highly polished, lustrous surface on wood or the like.
It's a common misconception that the term "lacquer" corresponds directly to paint (or a paint type). Lacquer is actually a type of varnish (the other type is polyurethane, like Future, and even some acrylic varnishes) that is mixed with paints or pigments (mostly with automotive spray paints) that give finishes their lovely shine.
Epoxy, on the other hand, is mixed with paint (or pigment) to increase its bond, its quick-drying property and overall strength. Epoxy paints are more resistant to light scratches. Hence, these types of paints actually don't need to be top coated unless you want extra protection (or that uber shine). Epoxy is a term often associated with glue, but in itself is a resin-based "hardener." That's why we call those two part glues as "epoxy" glues; one is the binder/glue, the other is the hardener/epoxy. Also, epoxy can't cure sealed under pressure, and only when it get exposed to air or a certain temperature range does it start to harden.
Acrylic, in turn, is a base for pigments, much like how some paints have enamel and latex bases. Acrylic and latex paints are water soluble and therefore can be thinned with plain water. Enamels are not, and require enamel thinners.
So, a Lacquer Acrylic Epoxy paint has 3 components; an acrylic-based pigment, epoxy to harden it, and lacquer to give it shine.

I use Flat black as base and primer, then Bosny 351 Gold, then gloss clear to make it shine The result is a bit grainy for others, but is just fine with me.

No worries. It's always nice to see people make awesome stuff on their first or so tries. I am still considering selling my unbuilt Unicorn, and maybe my VDash and Spiegel, I'm just having a bit of a hard time letting go (considering I didn't really like these three, well, the V-Dash was my Prize for an online contest, but the Unicorn kinda grew on me).
If ever I decide, I'll let you know first. I do have an unbuilt regular (not designer's color) NG 1/100 00 Gundam I'm selling for PhP 1300 with free built 0-Raiser, if you want it. The difference between the regular and designer's color is that aside from having a different hue the latter has the 0-Raiser included, and it comes at around 2600++

Woah never expected na merong Gundam thread dito! Looking for some time now 'til I found this...
Nice kits, Sir Matanglawin. I only have two MG's. ACGUY and Strike I.W.S.P. I'm more into Super Deformed Gundams. Mas madali kasing pinturahan. I just buy the Gundam Markers and those are good to go.
This was my hobby before I became addicted to pedals and such. Never painted my kits though 'cause I find washing, applying primer and coating, and painting too tedious. But of course, doing such is highly recommended as those processes make your kits look more astonishing and less "plastic-y".
Also check this site out. It's in Korean language but Chrome can translate some of it into English.
dalong.net
It contains reviews about Master Grades and Perfect Grades. Downside is, it is in Korean language. However, the pictures taken are quite okay as they cover lots of angles and articulations.

Anyways, here's a test shot of the Chimera, hopefully for G-Shot! I've used a technique to have it in flight mode without mounting it on an action stand, then added Lens Flare for effect.

Wow lumilipad na kit! Joke lang alam kong bawal ang troll dito.
Nice shot anyway! :-D
No worries. I don't consider that remark "trolling..."

Yeah let's keep this thread away from "trolls"! :-D
Anyways, which airbrush would you consider using? Iyung mga "for plastic kits" lang ba like the ones sold by hobby shops? Or pwede rin iyung mga nabibili sa hardware?
How about the mixture percentage of thinner and acrylic?
Thanks in advance! :-D

I'm not sure about "hardware" grade airbrushes; I haven't seen one. Maybe those are spray guns?
The thing about hobby/art grade aibrushes is that they are made specically for one to be able to control the spray burst. Personally, I'm still sticking with Spray cans for the meantime because they are convenient, albeit a bit challenging to use. I might get an AB ONLY if I get commissions.

Oh... Baka nga spray gun. I really don't know the exact term.
Anyways... So sige nga masubukan ngang pinturahan iyung ACGUY ko hehe. Hanap muna ako sa net ng detailed procedures about painting kits.

PG kasi eh tapos sobrang mura compared sa ibang PG. So nagdududa ako baka may "catch" kaya pala mura. I am curious if the experience working on that kit ay "pang-PG" nga. marami rin akong naiiisip na idea para about painting it.

Ah yes. The Special Clear parts come as a separate package offered during the first batch of orders (you also pay for it separately). One of Bandai's (or some distributor's) marketing strategy was to say that if you want to use the clear parts, you'll have to buy a second kit for it because the armor "sticks," making it difficult to remove, but that has disproven.
I'm selling mine because I realized I won;t a need for it. But then again, I can probably build a frame for it and make a statue instead.

That's called a rubber cutting mat. It also comes in blue and red and is available at National Bookstore. I've a green one that I've been using for more than 10 years.

Looks good and it is cheaper than the rest of PGs being sold. I was thinking of getting one but change the colors scheme hehehe...
If you're talking about special clear replacement parts, yes, it's around 2.5K when it was released, but it come as a buy one offer during the first batch of orders of the main kit, making the set the most expensive at 16K (M1Gs Price). The Kit alone (without the special parts) is around 13~15 depending on where you buy.

A friend of mine saw this already. The brand is Eagle. He said that it looks like a small spray gun, a little similar to an airbrush but the paint is placed in a bottle which is connected at the bottom of the spray. He said that the only difference is how you tweek or adjust the sprays burst or something like that. He said that he saw it at Ace Hardware and its around 999.75 pesos only. The only thing I dont know if it will be ok for gundam kits...

Single action. It might be okay for painting areas, but would still be a pain to use for detailing, and shading. It might be slightly better than spray can, since you can control the pressure with an AB regardless.

I don't like these external mix airbrushes. They have a tendency to splatter if not properly adjusted and tuned. Badger makes some inexpensive internal mix airbrushes. Best airbrush I ever had was my old Olympos HP trigger action (which my newer Tamiya HG looks very similar to) - excellent for fine detail work. If I had a choice, I'd try to obtain an Iwata or Paasche. There are some Grex airbrushes over at JMN, I think.

Post the picture first. Can't estimate a price, since what you described is one of the standard box sizes for both HG/NGs and MGs. It might be a bootleg for all we know. There's also a Yen price on the box, which is usually half in Pesos.

Most convertion kits are made by modelers din, ung mga nde makapaghintay ng release ng gusto nilang MS lalo sa MG lines. They call it garage kits afaik, ngrerecast sila ng parts. Mostly chinese and koreans ang manufacturer. May mga bigtime din gaya ng G-sytem.

I started collecting kits again just this March, I got an NG 1/144 Epyon from STC Ali Mall. I got the RX-78-2 2 weeks ago from Greattoysonline. I'm still considering if I'll be painting the two because I have zero experience in doing so. :-D Anyway, I hope to learn more in the following days from this thread and other sources around the web.
I had SD's way way back 1997 or 1998. I miss them so badly, Sazabi and Musha Psyco MK-II. :-(

i think # 6 is the original.
The meaning of the term "Gundam" changes depending on the series. It also even connotes to the alloy that is used to make the armor, which is sometimes "Gundanium" or "Gundarium." The origin of the word Gundam, however, is said to to have come from Gunboy Freedom or some silly origin like so and was later simply called "Gundam," and that is why most Gundam pilots (especially that of the main suits) are teenagers.

I need some help.
If you notice my post above with RX-78, I started panel lining that kit with 0.3 unipin tech pen. Problem is, I thought it was gonna be easy. Well, it was not; at least for me. I smudged the black ink all over the shield and tried to remove it with rubbing alcohol which I think made matters worse. My question is, do I need to just paint over it or there's something I can do to get rid of the smudge? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

@astral: Did you paint the kit before hand? Sometimes, plain warm water and soap can do the trick instead of rubbing alcohol.

@ art_attack16
Yep, yan din yung recommendation nung isa kong friend. Thanks man!
@ Matanglawin
Nope, I didn't paint the kit before panel lining it. My two options right now are sanding the affected parts or just spray can the whole thing. Natatakot lang ako magspray kasi wala pa akong experience.
On a side note: A friend of mine knows you through Gunpla din, IDK if you know him too.

since you're gonna sand it, look up "progressive sanding" to get back the (close to the original) original smoothness of the plastic. It's simply a process of sanding from a lower grit to a higher one.

Get the RX, but, I reco the One Year War version. It's more detailed and has better proportion compared to the 2.0 or the 30th.

any brands /stores na nagbebenta ng mga handy drill? yun mga rechargable para sa plastic?
and alternative to hobby saws? magkano ba ang starter kit na hobby saw?
thanks
ACE Hardware should have some, as for those thin hobby saws, mahirap makahanap, though, you might chance upon a set at lil's hobby or JMN (Harrison).

I've been reading about jeweler's saws. I believe these can be sourced in Raon. Also, dental drill bits can theoretically used for dremel tools... not sure if they fit in the dremel chucks though.

I'll try to source them out. I just hope they are cheaper compared to the hobby grade tools.

Alexan at Megamall has side cutters that cuts clean and is comparable to the expensive Tamiya and other branded versions.
Sakto! How much are those? Meron din kaya ng ganyan sa Deeco?
Deeco doesn't have them. You can get that for the very low price of 110 kesos. Alexan also has toothless pliers which are perfect for my plaplate bending needs.

ml, question lang.
Anong color mas prefer mo for panel lining? Grey or black gundam marker? For me kasi, when I panel-lined my Exia, parang masyadong nagsa-stand out yung black. I'm thinking grey would be subtle enough, but would still show-off the lining.

It depends on the overall color scheme, and your preference. I actually prefer black across the board.

I usually order from GreatToysOnline. Depends upon the "grade" and scale.
1/60 Perfect Grade - 6,000 up 1/100 Master Grade - at least 2,500 1/144 High Grade - at least 900 1/144 First Grade - 300 more or less

In the hands of modelers, they're more than just toys. The Sinanju is my most favorite kit. I'm looking forward to buying from you if you so choose to sell. Your best bet of getting bulk items is Rainbow10 (http://www.rainbowten.co.jp/english/index.html), but there is also HobbyLinkJapan (http://hlj.com), which happens to be one of our sponsors for the biggest online mech competition so far, the 2012 (http://mxgs.blogspot.com/2011/10/mac-is-making-waves.html).

Any upcoming events? I want to see them in real life hehe!
Not at the moment. Our next MAC event is 2012 (http://mxgs.blogspot.com/2011/10/mac-is-making-waves.html), an international online competition. There's a Toycon at SM Megamall this December, and the bigger one is every June. There's also TAGGCOM every April or May, and if Bankee holds it again, a Midyear competition next year.
Then, it's the BAKUC/BMKWC/GBWC every November.
I'd like invite you to join our Gundam/mecha modeler groups, MAC (https://www.facebook.com/groups/128096693885469/) and GMAC (https://www.facebook.com/groups/111097028913245/). I already posted your FB page on our walls.

This is the only non-transformable type Hasegawa VF1 I am aware of http://www.hlj.com/ths09hsghigh.html. It was released in 2009, so I'm not sure of its availability.

I'll look for some. The BD references I know of are for Gundams, though, I'm quite sure Gundam modelers refer to scale modeling techniques when it comes to battle damaged effects.

Some people use denatured alcohol, but there are some who use oven cleaners (like Easy-off), to strip off paint. Using oven cleaners, though, require that you soak the parts or at least saturate them and put them in covered containers, both to keep the cleaner from evaporating, and avoid fumes.

It should. The alcohol will take some time, though. Also, test whatever you plan to use on runners first, just to make sure.
Title: Re: Gundam Kits and Mods
Post by: KitC on December 31, 2011, 10:59:58 AM
I'd defer from using denatured alcohol here since they use acetone as an additive. Acetone with eat the styrene from your gundams like crazy. Oven cleaner is usually the preferred paint stripper, but remember it will also strip away any chrome/metallic plating from the model.
Some other paint removers are engine degreasers and brake fluid - these are rather nasty stuff and you have to clean the plastic thoroughly afterwards. For lacquer- and enamel-based paint, they say kerosene is a great paint stripper. As always, test on some sprues before using on your favorite model. I've seen some plastics literally disintegrate (not melt, mind you) when used with these chemicals. When cleaning the model, thoroughly soak in water with a strong liquid detergent.

The MAC Forums 2012 Mecha Contest is up and running. We had an enormous influx of entries just on the first day, and we expect more entries coming in soon. The competition will run for the next six months, so you'll have plenty of time to build.
The highlight of this contest are the Prizes. Just head on to http://boards.themacforums.com/index/ for more details.
RULES VER 2.5
Definition of "MECHA": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mecha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mecha) If you are unsure on your entry please feel free to pm "KAMM (http://boards.themacforums.com/profile/4095781/)" or "SNEEPER1980 (http://boards.themacforums.com/profile/4107747/)" to clarify if your entry is valid.
1. EVERY entry must be submitted with a photo demonstrating the kit was started after January 1st 2012. Use the "ENTRY PASS POSTER" available here (http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad89/KammGunpla/2012%20Mecha%20Contest/6581097469_4a979a27b9_b.jpg): and (click spoiler for example)
- Kits can be snap fitted but no changes maybe done in the entry photo. - Resin entries must not be completely clean (de-nubbing, sanding must be done after January 1st) although this is relative, exceptions may be made. Please do contact "KAMM" or "SNEEPER1980" to clarify if your entry is valid. - Entry photos are used to verify that the project was not started before Jan 1. Any questions about the validity of the entry will be handled between the judges and the individual, Entries that contain elements started and/or completed before Jan 1 will be disqualified. - If we take issue with your entry picture we will contact you immediately to discuss your entry.
2.Contest will run until July 1st & - You can enter more than one kit. - You can enter a kit in more than one category as longs as your entry adheres to the rules of each category.
3. Any MECH style kit is allowed (if unsure please pm me or sneeper1980) example: Zoids, Ma.k, Gundam, Robotech, Super Robot Wars, FSS, etc.
4. RESIN kits & RESIN conversion kits are accepted - We ask that the kits are not completely cleaned (de-nubbed or sanded) but we will accept projects started close to the starting date. If we take issue with your entry picture we will contact you immediately to discuss your entry.
5. CATEGORIES:
OOB PAINTED
Kits that are UNCHANGED (physically) Such as Modifications or Physical Damage but are solo painted belong in the "OOB PAINTED" Category. - Custom paint jobs are accepted. - Seam line removal is accepted. - Waterslide decals are accepted. - Plastic add on kits may be used. The must follow to these rules: - Must be an official product for the model. Example: Dengeki Hobby kits for Bandai's Gundams, Schneider unit for Zoids Liger Zerro. - Must be plastic. B-club resin accessories will shift entry to the resin category. - Must be used for the proper kit. Example: Can not use Schneider unit for a Great Horn, or Wagtail parts on an Exia. - Panel line filling is accepted. - Panel line scribing is not accepted. - Use of aftermarket watersides is accepted. - Action Bases/Stands (made by Bandai, etc) or Custom Bases (that doesn't qualify as Dioramas) can be used to display an entry's poseability. Organizers/Judges will determine what constitutes as a Diorama and a Custom base and shall be discussed with entrant, as the case may be (see rule 6).
MODIFIED PLASTIC/CUSTOM
Kits that are changed from their original form (physically) such as modifications, physical damage or Kit bashing belong in "MODIFIED PLASTIC" Category.
DIORAMA
Kits that feature diorama setting are to be placed in the "DIORAMA" Category. -Multiple kits may be used. -Resin is accepted in this category. -No size limitations (only we ask you provide evidence of when the diorama was started. See rule 1.) -Non model kits, such as Figurearts, Revoltech may be used as diorama material. The main subject must be built by the modeler. NOTE: The use of unaltered figures is discouraged but allowed. Judges will be judging on the end result and the work put into it. An unaltered figure is not as desired as an custom painted figure, and likewise not as desired as a model or scratch built figure. USE DISCRETION.
RESIN PAINTED/MODIFIED
Resin kits and/or Resin Conversion that are straight painted or have been modified are to be placed into the "RESIN PAINTED/MODIFIED" category.
CONCEPT
When entering the "CONCEPT" category. Entrants must follow the rules below: The intent of this category is to show superior modeling skills, and creativity. This category will test the modelers ability to design something new and unique, using scratch building techniques. Dioramas do not count in this category.
-Kit must NOT already exist in a licensed mechs Franchise universe, having previously been a model kit or not. That means: -No Gundam designs -No FSS designs -No Super Robot Wars designs -No Warhammer 40k designs -No Zoids designs -No Armored core designs …You get the point.
- Kit must be an original design. Entries who receive complaints and/or comments as to there originality will be investigated and/or disqualified. KEEP IT YOURS! - Parts from other kits maybe used but ultimately the build must be scratch built by the builder. - Kits will receive higher marks for the amount of scratch building. Kit bashing will receive fewer points. - Entrants MUST create a WIP thread on the MAC forums giving pictures and description of their build showing the "ENTRY PASS POSTER" (see rule 1) - WIPs are used to verify the level of scratch building used and the validity of the design as unique. - WIPs do not have to be updated with any tracked regularity but come submission time the WIP must contain enough to verify the build. - Use common sense.
6. Stands my be used in any category to display and take photos for submission, but outside the Diorama category they will not be considered in the grading of the entry.
7. When Submitting entries. Please see (example coming...)
8. Entries that do not adhere to the rules will be disqualified.
9. If you have any questions please see the Questions posted below before asking. Thank you

Start small and cheap if you like, with 1/144 and 1/100 HGs. Most of the new HGs are actually good nowadays.
Get an MGs if you want more parts to tinker with.
I get my stuff from Greattoysonline. Michiko is also selling Gundams online.

Just be careful posing the wings too much to often. The articulation mechanism that make the wings fold out gets worn down rather quickly because that color of ABS is softer than the grey or black.

Alrighty, thanks for the tip. :-)

like!! may mura bang gundam na pwedeng kulayan? mga magkano yung ganon?
Meron daw. Yung mga knock off lang. Sa 168 madami daw dun. 400 lang ata. Pero sabi nila hirap daw i-assemble eh. May mga parts na sablay. Mag High Grade ka nalang, mas mura yun pero magandang quality naman.

I discourage buying knockoffs/bootlegs. Sayang lang ang ipinambili mo.
If you want to start small and cheap, try the SD series, or the cheaper HGs. they range from PhP400 up.
Title: Re: Gundam Kits and Mods
Post by: heyman on January 20, 2012, 07:34:07 PM
e bakit both priced at 400 up? dami siguro maloloko sa 168. cge ill try to look for one mukhang ok para malibang libang. addictive ba to as hobby?
Bootleg prices are always about less than half the actual market price. The 400 bootleg is a 1/100 NG kit. The 400 authentic is either an SD or 1/144 HG.
Say an authentic MG that costs 2K will only be around 800 bootleg. A 1K HG, around 250, etc.

Sir matanglawin, just a question. I tried using my 0.1 techpen on the lines and small holes of my gundam. Kaya lang, nabubura sila and sometimes it gets a little messy. What should I use as substitute?
Thanks.

Deepen the panel lines. Or, wait for the ink to dry completely, especially on bare plastic.
There's also the copic markers, and some use 0.5 pencils.

@kurtcobainer oo ng andaming parts and runners eh. i put 10+ hours parehas (nasoundtrip ko na buong discography ng opeth) kaya para kang nagbuo ng "medyo" MG haha! i got both for 2k (i can't really afford those MG's since I'm still in college) pero satisfied naman ako :-D
@gwenmoyk ok yung plastic niya bro, not that up par with bandai's pero imho better than those NG's. i wasn't able to get the Hi-Nu with the "Wings of Light" - limited edition kasi yun and wala na akong makita, pero this one is ok naman and some reviews from the internet rate its details better than the HGUC version. btw, the Nu had an extra set of fin funnels (not pictured), and pwede pa ikabit yun along with the original set. it looks like this: (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5661414556_acfa899e4b.jpg) yes, it also comes with those beam sabers. pwede na rin for a bootleg no?
anyway, here's another recent acquisition: (http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ly9j8oIwzP1qfjgpbo2_500.jpg) an HG aile strike and an ivory white chinese dragon opium pipe i bought on impulse from a shady garage sale to celebrate the chinese new year :-D

ganun din iniisip ko.. parang mas OK yan sa HGs and NGs... ung NU mas balanced tignan kung may extra funnels... sing laki ba sila ng 1/100 ng bandai?
and oh, nice pipe! gratz...

the nu is taller than those 1/144's but shorter than the 100's and the hi-nu is roughly the same height as the 1/100's. bastard scaling eh haha! :-o well, they say you get what you pay for. but these MC model kits have better plastic than those TT Hongli ones. thanks bro! anyway, i'm GAS-ing right now for a legit strike noir and stargazer. might check out greenhills quite soon. :-D

Nice, will this be in your blog? I wanna tune in for the WIP. You did this with plaplates?
The base is a Unicorn display stand, that came as a free collectible with a Dengeki Hobby issue, and later came with limited edition1/144 HGUC Unicorn kits. Same with the Sinanju.
The modified V-fin is a combination of the stock V-fin reversed onto itself, and a secondary pair made with HIPS (or plaplate, as the case may be). The rest of the bust (shoulders, chest) will be made from scratch with plaplates/HIPS for the armor and beams/runners for the framework. It may progress into a full articulated "statue" that will measure around 55cm in height, which is taller than the mega-sized RX78-2.
Check out my blog regularly. I'm currently working on a "secret" project, but I'll be doing this from time to time.

Oh my bad. I didn't know that was the bust the HGUC kit was talking about. I thought it was.. y'know, smaller... 55cm, for a bust.. wow, that's big.
Will do check your blog.

HAH! I didn't notice the "Ronin" before. Silly me... :))
The Ronin will be a meanwhile mainstay on my worktable, so, I guess it'll be on a lot of WIP pictures soon, so as long as the shot angle is concerned.

Been living with the kits for almost 8 months now and na-eenganyo na rin ako magbuo. For some reason, I find the ones with the swords and wings more amazing than the one with a more stout look like the Zaku and Gouf.
Anyway, here's our current stockpile at home. Check my sig for details. :-D
