Guitar Solos that Changed Your Life...

Every six string samurai encounters a solo that permanently realligns the personal musical trajectory. Whats yours?

Here are mine:

1. Jimi's "Star Spangled Banner"- my dad played the woodstock vhs (heheheh, analog era!) when i first picked up the guitar 14 years ago. after "experiencing this, i knew what to do ;)

2. Yngwie's "Blackstar" - from Jimi, I grew into a neoclassical freak. The Swedish meatball was good at capturing the imagination, Bach n' Roll! Hence, my brief stint with neoclassical stuff

3. Vai's "Eugene's Trick bag" - no shredder, and I mean NO shredder could possibly be numb to this clip from the "Crossroads" movie. Hanep eh, further enforced the neoclassical in me :)

4. Larry Carlton's "Kid Charlemagne" solo - marked the end of my shred fascination. fusion na! irresistable bop licks under a great rhythm with cool chords. i want to be sophisticated like mr. 335 :)

5. Danny Gatton's version of "Harlem Nocturne" - country music is cool, you can learn all sorts of weird licks and freaky bends. but when i heard "The Humbler" and this tune, i tore myself a new bung hole and discovered a new hero. he wails, spanks, rips, plays slide with a beer bottle and is fluent with jazz pa. long live redneck jazz!

metallica - one. actually not the solo per se. pero the lead part over the clean rhythm... introduced me to metal and thrash... pati fade to black.

led zeppelin - stairway to heaven. it linked my 80's metal fascination to the 70's classic rock roots. bands like acdc, deep purple, black sabbath, pink floyd etc... and this songs takes dynamics to a whole new level. also became interested in blues.

queen - bohemian rhapsody. ganda ng solo. before queen i was pure metal and classic rock. it opened my mind to a lot of genres like pop, dance etc... it also opened me up to vocal arrangements and such.

paul gilbert - (anything) from here it was everything from mr. big to racerx to his solo work. introduced me to a lot og his influences like the beatles, the who, michael schenker/ufo/msg,jim hendrix, malmsteen, van halen etc...

2) solo sa "through the fire" (short but sweet, hehe)
3) eto rock: solo ni dimebag sa "this love"

the reason why i started to play guitar was when i listened to the Van Halen Best Of Volume 1 album. that was my first time to hear true blue shredding from the king Eddie himself. since then, i've listened to Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Clapton, Hendrix, etc.

here are some solos that really inspired me to play:

1. Judgment Day (Van Halen) - the A7-B7-C7-D7-E7 tap lick is monstrous!

2. Hot For Teacher (Van Halen) - vintage Ed, tapping galore

3. Dreams (Van Halen) - harmonics, whammy bar stuff, every trick in the book

4. All About You (Eric Johnson) - the long solo going to the outro

5. Sunshine Of Your Love (Cream) - introduced me to blues rock

Anything by Van Halen... my first encounter with VH material was the F.U.C.K. album.  From there, bought the older ones.

Gotta be that Foo Fighters song with Brian May song, "Have a Cigar." It was a cover, but the solo was awesome.

Or maybe Die to Live by Vai, hmm.  :?

1. John McLaughlin - I was in high school when I first heard his 'Electric Guitarist' album, and his solo on 'Do You See The Voices That You Left Behind?' just left me (and my guitar-playing friends) scratch my head in disbelief ... it was like 'whoa!' Being young and eager to learn, I thought that speed was the way to go ... but that's not to say that McLaughlin's playing was purely speed-oriented, as I soon found out

2. Al di Meola - with McLaughlin on your mind, how can di Meola not be too far behind? I absorbed his 'Splendido Hotel' and 'Casino' albums like a sponge. It was his fast and clean picking, which he called his 'mutola' technique, that won me over

Fave cuts: 'Dinner Music of the Gods' - fantastic sustain!

3. The Supertrio album - John McLaughlin, Al di Meola, Paco de Lucia

Having heard the two aforementioned heroes, I thought that their styles were heavily dependent on their electric gear.

This album disproved that ...

When I heard it, it was like, 'holy [gooey brown stuff]! That's really how they play! Even if they're stripped off all their gear ...'

4. Pat Metheny - 'James' from the Offramp album

My first exposure to Metheny. This was like a very radical, refreshing change from the furious, manic guitar playing I dug at the time. The 'chorused' sound (which I wasn't aware of yet at the time) contributed a large part to the appeal.

5. Allan Holdsworth - first heard/saw through his Tokyo Dream concert. It gave me a fever on the spot and made me question my guitar sensibilities

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven, It was like being drawn from my conscious being into an oblivious or even an unconscious state. The solo to this song made me decide to devote my life to music. To this day, I still feel that twitch up my chest.

Yngwie Malmsteen - Never Die, Seventh Sign - I was petrified, no other way to describe how I felt. That encounter for me was the realization of speed and the neo-classical style of playing which has influenced me a lot.

Joe Satriani - Down down down, The aching bends were nearly unbearable.

Al Di Meola - Song To The Pharoah Kings (Manhattan Sessions), The first time I heard this song I thought the song sounded so strange (I still do), the timing, various directions taken, I guess that was my first encounter with fusion, its like seeing things from a higher place, enlightenment as it were. I've already heard about his speed (and I thought I was prepared for it until Race with devil on spanish highway), but the intensity and the angularity of the playing and the way the theme was worked on was the thing that got me. Phrasing more than technique.

Danny Gatton - Funhouse, The first time I heard this song, I couldn't get off the chair. The ripping double-stops and chicken picking was just crazy, it made me realize what else could be achieved.

Hmmm what else...

Estranged - Guns n' Roses --- the biggest reason why I idolized Slash back in high school

All I Want Is You - Bryan Adams --- yeah, yeah I know. it's just strange that back in college, when I try to imagine a great emotional guitar solo, I listen to this song after a few days and boom... it's right there in that song.

All I Want Is You - U2 --- hehehe. same title. probably one of the longest solos The Edge has ever played in a studio album.

See You On The Other Side - Ozzy --- deeply personal reasons

Vai - For the Love of God: This song first introduced me to the virtuostic forms of music. As well as the emotional content. This song also affected my faith towards my religion. It made me start another journey - finding GOD thru music, that is. :)

Eric Johnson - Manhattan: This entirely changed my approach for tone. And again, the sate of consiousness that it provides whilst listening to it. This made me further realize one of the essences of music - and that has always been my challenge.

Wes Montgomery - 'Round Midnight: My understanding towards life and jazz.

I'll be Over You - Toto: How simple but substancial music can be. Less is more ika nga.

Allan Holdsworth - City Nights: Taught me how to appreciate music more, that we all have different and unique musicality within us and that there are no absolute rules in music. This song made me a more open-minded person.

Santana - Europa: Taught me the meaning of SOUL. As well as how spiritual music could be.

Mostly pop  tsaka slow rock ang una kong nakagisnan, kaya eto mga naging eye-opener para sa akin nung nagsisimula pa lang ako:

1. I Want to Break Free (Queen) - ang kauna-unahan kong kinapa na lead elibs talaga ako ke Brian May.  Queen ang kauna-unahan kong naging paboritong rock band.
2. Hotel California (Eagles) - matagal na panahon ko din itong ine-air guitar bago ko tuluyan kapain ng seryoso. ayoko kasing kapain at baka mawala yung mystique nya.  galing ni Don Felder at Joe Walsh :)

What convinced me to play the guitar?

Solos:

Eruption - VH
Middle of the Road - The Pretenders
Everyone wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

These may not be the ultimates solos but these ones are soulful and convinced to buy that 1980 "The Strat" from JB Music in Harrison Plaza back in 1985. I still have that guitar (along with a 1987 MIJ Squier Strat and a 2000 MIM Standard Telecaster plugged into a Fender Princeton 65 looped with a Digitech RP3).
