i add a lot of passing notes especially when soloing over modal tunes. useful din chromaticism in giving a sense of anticipation. about playing fluently... know the tune by heart. play the notes of the melody every now and then. hum your improv then translate it into guitar notes. practice technical exercises... ang fluent na guitar playing mo jazhombie ha.  :-) i myself play sloppy sometimes lalo na pag di pa warmed up or antok na. he he
the thing is bro, pag napapakinggan ko si scott hnderson or let say pat metheny, they seem to play things naturally without thinking this and that--it just comes out naturally.. tnx sa tips.. may be i have to tke things by heart.. :-D

from hanging out and watching jano in the past...

i learnt that a strong, steady rhythmic motif can make an interavllic shape fluid, regardless of any key.

what a bastard! hahahahah  :-D

really, methinks that the focus on rhythm, as in putting it in the drivers seat, and leaving harmony and melody at the trunk, makes outside lines-patterns-shapes-intervals.... fit! as i heard him also state- there are no wrong notes, only wrong resolutions.

as for me playing outside...

... only when it's not raining, and when the neighbors are not asleep  :-D

Think of Thelonious Monk... :-D

outside playing boarders beyond theory kasi, by theory its not supposed to fit...

"You know, anybody can play a composition and use far-out chords and make

it sound wrong. It’s making it sound right that’s not easy."

--Thelonious Monk, 1961

I have also watched Scott Henderson's video lesson melodic phrasing a hundred times...

Tha man really hits the spot!

Try to find a copy and i hope it opens doors for you... 8-)

shapes is important too... i think, similar to sushi's, i come up with same shapes then do 'side stepping' to go out...

but still, cant do thing's fluetly.. kelngan cguro, religious practice sa phrasing..

niwey, i'll try to purchase scott's 'phrasing lesson'...hmmm.. tnx 'nice music'..

is it true about that jazz cat who played "out" always and so fluently that one time he heard a really 'weird' chord and he was dumbfounded how to play it?

... it was simple major chord.

But yeah, Thelonious nails it.  Any fool can play "out", but only geniuses like Monk and Powell can make it "feel" like it wasn't.

ahhhh...

The Loneliest Monk  :-D

lemme assess my sched, jam tayo lahat sana, or meet up at an EB. Jazz take over!!!  :-)

patterns and shapes are great, as long as you don't live by them. I dig the expansiveness of quartals, and warping them in and out, and messing with wider intervals  I dont even wanna touch on holdsworth, he scares the living daylights out of me. Garsed and Jim Muller are more digestable.

Jano = Gambale  :wink:

I is I who is working on being Garsed! (wannabe!)  Hahahahahah  :-D

i'm that fool

i hit a lot of "out" notes but usually not on purpose. madalas ,when i'm not looking at what my hands are doing and they get knocked half a step off (usually in the wrong direction). minsan, i get cocky and start placing chromatics in the wrong places. also, when i lose track of where the music is and i fail to move with it.

tama kayo, Monk rightly exemplifies this type of (out) playing.

others who typify this side-stepping of notes are:

steve coleman, kenny garrett and greg osby.
