What i got was the body, an 18-70 dx lens, a kenko filter, tamrac velocity bag and 4 months to pay for a value of......

Saved up and bought a 85mm 1.4.

First shot while in the shop.

Toying around at home.

At the moment it doesnt deliver but hopefully in time at with more practice it would live up to its magical reputation.

What i dont like is...
-manual and autofocus switch is a pain and it feels CHEAP.....gasp :-o
-the plastic depth scale cover rattles around and does not look durable. For the price that i paid it should feel a bit more stable.
-it doesnt perform 10 times better against the second hand 50mm 1.4 MF.

Sinnerman where you gonna run too....... :-D

...and i bought the 85 1.4 for the autofocus to keep up with my boy.

I WAS WRONG.   It was still slow......INDOORS.

The only shot of him that i was happy with

Here is my favorite spot at second na paborito na still subject.

ISO640...wide open.
Not much difference with the 50 1.4MF. above, maybe just a tad slower sa shutter but still not a big gap.

I have a lot of learning to do.

Any tips?

85 f1.4 wow. hanggang panagarap lang maafford ko ang prime na yan. anyhow prime user ako sa d80 ko(50 1.8). primes are the fastet lens you can get. ito usually ginagamit ko pag ndi well lit yung room:

set mo to aperture priority. tapos lagay mo iso ng mga 1000 to 1250, since naka prime ka naman ndi ganong kalala noise niya lalo na at f1.4. then set your pop up flash to manual then select mo yung pinaka mahinang power(1/128).

pag gusto mo ng full control talaga:
set to manual mode. basta make sure na ang shutter mo ay ndi baba sa 1/focal lentgh so sa iyo 1/85 pero since wala namang 1/85, at least nasa 1/80 or 1/100 ka and sure na sharp yan(assuming you have normal steady arms)

ano ba yung slow? yung pag autofocus ng 85mm?

Yes and a bit no.

I can do shots wherein fast shutter and sharp ang kuha pero under exposed and vice versa.

Also the autofocus together sa d80 tsaka sa lens is a bit slow compared to my
18-70mm dx lens.

Haayy upgraded the lens NOW feeling like dapat upgrade rin ang katawan.

Alam ko itong feeling na ito all too well

imo, grabe soft ng mga images mo. which is weird, dapat tact sharp sila. brandnew niyo po ba nabili?
try using AF-A, madedetermince naman ng cam kung anong af dapat gamitin.

try niyo po mag shoot ng maliwanag, try shooting at f1.4 to f4.  primes should be really sharp lalo na at f4.

Yup bago pre.

I think ako lang ang may learning curve. Its still a joy to use and im still on my 1.4-2.8 phase. Basta di gumagalaw yung subject sharp sya even wide open and when you frame the subject at the center of the frame.

Those uploaded pics look a lot better before i upload them so maybe its the conversion or compressing thats happening. What do you call that anyway.
They look much better on my hard drive.

Yung 50 1.4 manual focus had the same problem but maybe dahil sa focal length nya mas mabilis pa rin sya. I was just disappointed sa autofocus nya....mabagal pa rin for a toddler running around.

I bought it for that reason in the first place...i can blame the d80 for this i guess.

hmm things you can do, kung under warranty pa yung lens, have it calibrated with your body. ganito ginawa ko sa kit lens ko dati and ganda ng naging result, faster focusing, sharper images.

mabilis na talaga dapat ang prime pero kung hindi ka pa rin satisfied, sell your 85mm and get a sigma 24-70 hsm or 70-200hsm. ang bilis na nung motor niyan or dagdag ka pa ng konti and get those fast nikkors with vr and motors.

try to use  a tripod and focus on something, timplahin mong maigi yung settings para ma-achieve mo yung gusto mong makuha. or better use a flash, para hindi maunder expose or maover expose ang subject.

Yeah i was thinking of the calibrating thing pero i just had it for a week so ill just soldier along for now.

Was thinking of those lenses youve mentioned but i really fell in love with the 85 1.4.

Hopefully in the near future with lots of trial and error.....will open itself up :-D

i struggled with my 35mm prime too but i found out that i get the sharpest images using the lowest ISO setting possible and i've turned the auto-ISO off too.

i never needed to go higher than 800 and im at 200 90% of the time. d40 lang pala gamit ko. im using shutter priority kapag madilim yung lugar tapos P mode kung mabilisan

my 2 cents...

You may wana check your distance from you subject. 85mm is really created for portraits. it would have difficulty to focus its near.

Sir you my wanna try to set  your focus point manually, metering indoors use Spot then Aperture priority keep iso below 800. Be aware of the focus distance of you lens.

85mm 1.4 is an awesome lens..

Yeah bro. Its pretty awesome when shooting static subjects.

Im pretty aware that it is a short telephoto lens with the d80 and its small depth of field wide open.

Ive had success using the built-in flash though.

Its all good......at the moment.

Pag indoors tsaka di sila gumagalaw ok sya. But indoors with a kid and just trying to catch the moment...mahirap. Bump the iso or pop flash.

But if outdoors the lens is a rockstar.

At sb900 pinag-isipan kayang maigi....guitar gas or photo gas?

The SB900 won tsaka at least natuwa si kumander nung kinunan ko sya ng mga off flash portraits.
There is a very steep learning curve though coz wala akong alam sa flash photography.

The fun never ends. Thanks sa comments.

if i may add mga sirs..

f/1.4 has a very narrow DOF (around 1 inch on a subject 6 feet away (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html)) so sobrang daling mawala sa focus plane yung subject (like slight movements ng subject or kahit ng camera).. as for the focus tracking, i've had successes in shooting running pirates (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ihopethisnamecounts/3985665273) using the 85mm f/1.4 so i don't think slow sya (i have a d90 though but i think d80 is not that far off)..

IMHO, the cause of the "soft focus" in most of the pics is the slow shutter speed and not the focus.. yan din kasi napansin ko sa mga soft-focused shots ko, kadalasan mabagal ang shutter speed.. i agree dun sa rule of thumb na 1/focal length, actually the higher the better.. may mga noise reduction softwares naman e in case na-crank up masyado yung ISO..  :-D

also, you may be seeing more successes with the 50mm kasi 1/50 ang lumalabas na minimum shutter speed, compared to the 1/85 ng 85mm..

BTW, nice shots and congrats sa sb900! :)

f/1.4 has a very narrow DOF (around 1 inch on a subject 6 feet away (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html)) so sobrang daling mawala sa focus plane yung subject (like slight movements ng subject or kahit ng camera).. as for the focus tracking, i've had successes in shooting running pirates (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ihopethisnamecounts/3985665273) using the 85mm f/1.4 so i don't think slow sya (i have a d90 though but i think d80 is not that far off)..

The lens mabilis sya pag outdoors at sufficient light. Mrs. on a joyride sa swing no problem only if i hadnt had my 2 year old jr. locked on my feet i would have had a better shot.

meron rin akong manual 50mm 1.4. now that is a joy to use pero masisiraan ka rin ng ulo pag 2 year old kinukunan mo.

Here are some shots with the 50.

^paps, if you have an 85mm f1.4 auto-focusing on a D80, then you have THE perfect setup for low-light photography. i gotta be honest, that duo is my dream setup.
these are my tips for lowlight photography, based on your setup:

1. set your D80 to shutter speed priority mode.
2. set it to ISO 800.
3. set the shutter speed to 1/125. this will automatically set your lens to a wider aperture. if it does not get as wide as f1.4, then set the shutter speed faster. this way, you have less or almost no chance of getting a blurred shot. mabilis eh.
4. kung medyo madilim naman ang 1/125 na speed, you may slow down the shutter by a step until you get ample light on your shot.

D80 focus isnt that fast. Mas mabilis pa focus motor drive ng nikon f90X.

With that said ill try your pointers bro.

i think may mga umbrella mounts na angled yung slots to align with the flash.. try mo sir isaksak from the other side.. kung hindi man, what you could do is place the umbrella as farther away from the flash head as possible. then set the flash zoom to it's widest setting.. if your flash is mounted on a receiver via the hotshoe, you might consider attaching it via other means instead (like yung mga ports sa gilid ng flash) para di masyado mataas yung flash from the mount, although usually di naman ganun kalaki ang difference..

as for the flash placement, maraming pwedeng gawin depende sa gusto mong shot.. pwedeng on-camera or malapit sa camera for fill light.. or sa mejo likod/gilid ng subject for rim light.. or you could light the background (the wall or the counter or both).. or aim it at the ceiling to give a good spread of light in the whole scene..

bro, you can try putting a simple reflector sa opposite side nung flash para kahit papaano mag-cross-light na rin. you'd probably be able to put highlight on the elements on the RIGHT SIDE of the picture like the side of the nostrils, the jaw-line, the ears and the hair. use the white side of an illustration board or a styrofoam sheet.

Its the most expensive thing i bought personally for myself to date.

Thomas the tank engine silver plated VINTAGE 1968 :-o

.......kidding

Still cant believe i bought it. My head is still spinning as im typing.

La akong DSLR ngayon so wag nyo akong kulitin sa pics at review for now.
I was torn between getting a d700 and this but the lens won hands down.

As usual the shop i bought it badtrip. La ka man lang konting pamigay at medyo
suplado kasi siguro di nila masyadong alam english.
But i demanded to see two units at least pinagbigyan nila ako.

Oh and there is no return policy :|......100k wasted :x

^bro everyone knows that this lens is one of the superiors of all nikkor line-up. so congratulations on your purchase. though mahal nga talaga, but you'll never go wrong with this glass. pero nasaan na yung D80 mo? did you sell it to purchase this?

kung ako siguro may 100k for camera equipment, i would've gotten the D700 and just get a 50mm or an 85mm; or 5D mkII + 55mm/85mm. but that's just me.

tol, if you have time you could visit me here at work or maybe sa bahay. ill let you use my nikon body para ma-test mo yan. alam kong gusto mo nang ma-unleash ang lupit ng lenteng yan.  8-)

Im plotting to get a d90 to go with my lens system.

Para sa akin mas madali bumili ng DSLR cam than awesome glass thats why the lens won coz no way im gonna spend that much again just for me in the near future.
( maybe a 14-24 nikkor in 5 years time )

Im more of a lens guy really.......I CANT WAIT TO GET A BODY ON THIS :x :-D

Good investment. Invest first sa glass rather than sa body. If you're shooting events(general) or sports, zooms are better. Pero if you're shooting portraits go for primes. Those zooms are made to perform like prime lenses with the added zoom capability. If may review dyan na nagsasabi na mas sharp talaga ang primes, yes totoo pero come to think of it it's not that big naman. Good buy bro! What filter are you using? I think yan ung cause ng flares mo.

Im using a HOYA filter kasi ang mahal nung nikon eh.
Oo nga no pag gamit di nano coated transferable din siguro yun.

Siguro nasa 135 and below.

AutoWB lagi.

The subjects are most times shot as it is under streetlights at night or in darkness.
Daytime and indoor daytime again as it is, the photos do look a bit too vivid
but didnt change any settings....just the lens.

Can you please specify where it is most obvious.

bro,

try shooting with cloudy WB, try lang, to warm things a bit...

or boost contrast and saturation..

here are some of my old nikon photos, no PP

Im not a fan of vivid setting on the picture control.
I like tweaking them sa PP.

I also cannot tell the diffrence just by looking at the photos if it was shot with a nikon or canon.

Yes the cloudy WB setting to warm things up, yes good trick but i usually forget to put it back when i meant to not use it so i stick with auto mostly.
I dont like warming up the whole scene when i just wanted warm skin tones, night i havent tried it under man made light.

It usually works most times.
Maybe time to get a spyder for the monitor.

Off the cam with the tele lens.

like jc , i also like shooting in Vivid settings. i apply WB depending on the light source.

pallas, i suggest shooting in RAW. then adjust it in PS. see whats the best WB for your pics.

Nikon DOtsoDies

Ive waited and thought about it and waited some more....till they got the bugs sorted out.
Im on a clean slate to start over. No PC or laptop to upgrade hence the decision. The plan is to dump the NEF files on the CF card onto an external HD and deal with it some other time then just enjoy the jpegs on the ipad....torture them some more with PP if that's my thing.
Checked the serial number, the shutter count...crossing my fingers on the thermal heat issues but ive got a week to return it so ill fire up some videos to check it out. Coming from the Nikon D700 which was an awesome camera this one SITS on my grip just right. The grip is deeper and feels more like a tummy cut on a souped up Telecaster.

The shutter feels and sounds like a finger slapping on buttah!! Smooth I tell ya!!
The D700 felt like a small pistol was unloading inside, on slow shutter speeds it felt like it affected hand held shots.

Got a credit card JUST for it too....24  months no interest close 5K a month.........sahwweeettt!!!
The said card has been shredded and been used only for this purchase.

Though I know some SAME Fuxxxing sweet deals on Parsons!! Im itching for a Gibson 335......Good Lord Almighty!!!!
