as i understand its censorship eh, parang ang dating eh.. magkakaroon ng isang internet organization that will apply the law of SOPA to control everything thats on the internet.. in some its like freedom, parang freedom of the press daw.. for me kasi what the point..

eto lang yan eh.. Reputasyon.

That's your only reason? Wikipedia provides a lot of help to students. Pft.

tell that to scholars who don't have access to internet. to your parents who didnt have computers back then. hindi mahirap maghagilap ng libro. may mga library kung di mo kaya bumili.

Yeah? And how updated are those books? At least in wikipedia, you could check the sources. Thesis? Look it up on wikipedia, check the sources, and go get the source. It gives you a headstart. Everything is moving towards convenience, why go against it?

I say sopa is just another move by the government to control everything.

Learning and absorbing everything using the internet or online is good, but I also prefer old-school, hardcore book reading. Majority of people nowadays, mostly the younger generation, DO NOT READ books anymore with the advent of technology...and yet sometimes, not even if there's the convenience of it. They would even laugh at you for having read a thick book, mind you. Believe me, I've been laughed at before because I read the original book version of The Bourne Identity and not its movie adaptation.

But let it be known to all that I am definitely NOT in favor of SOPA and PIPA.

FYI, it's not Wikipedia alone that's going down when this bill goes through. Even posting a cover of copyrighted songs on YouTube and other things like that will become illegal.

That includes downloading hard-to-find, sought-after songs that you can play in your iPod. You need to have a credit card to buy music that you can't find here in the Philippines. That sounds very ominous.

More gigs, more exhibits, less bedroom artists. Siguro mababawasan na rin ang crap artists.

pero ayoko parin maipasa yung bill.

Note: Wikipedia IS NOT a good source of reliable information.

so the topic forks into a debate on whether or not wikipedia is a reliable information source or not? i dont think the sopas tackles that. there is a lot of unreliable information floating around the internet. like the time na nagoyo tayo ni maria ozawa na magpapa audition dito sa pinas. depende na lang sa nagbabasa kung magpapaloko or hindi.

Ooops, guess what?
This is pretty serious, guys. It may drastically change the internet as we know it.

Supalpalin ang SOPA!!! Yes to freedom! Hindi kasalanan ng mga bata na magturn to wikipedia for homeworks or even thesis. Me i learn from wiki most of the time but i screen the ones that are real and important. Parents who are always not around for their kids and goes straighlty to the internet when they arrive at home and doesn't have the time to guide their kids are the ones responsible for wikithesis. We had a library at the university but i'm not that lazy to check them books out even if i know i could use the internet. wikithesis is not studying that is crap.

Please do understand that this law mainly goes after the P2P sharing system, preventing torrent sites to share copyrighted material.  It doesn't hamper one's "freedom" but prevents people from committing piracy.  There are a lot of people who claim using  torrents are not stealing, but merely sharing information.

The main problem if this law passes, is it's a blanket law.  You won't be able to "reference" other photos and put them on your websites/blogs.  You won't be able to do "covers" for your favorite songs like (ugh) Baby, Baby and (uck) Poker Face.

You will no longer be able to get lyrics online, or even discuss anything that requires referencing other material, because anything that's copyrighted is off-limits.

Copyright, or the fancy way of saying it, Intellectual Property, is automatic.  Copyright is by virtue of creation.  Now, instead of the actual authors running after you, whether they like it or not, the government to which the author's copyright originate will.

It's like swatting Jack Sparrow and his crew whose ship is docked in a heavily populated area with a 10 kiloton nuke.

SOPA and PIPA are very selfish laws, made by selfish people for the selfish people.

The bill clearly states that the judgements and orders rendered by a US court shall be automatically enforeceable against any server, computer, or any transmitting device wherever located. IT WILL NOT RESPECT THE LIMITATION OF JURISDICTION. They will shut em down with DoS and brute force attacks, that I am sure of. They need not file for an action to enforce foreign judgment. THEY WILL ENFORCE IT, not to sound flip but, WITH GREAT FORCE.

The law will in effect create a legal and government sactioned hacking and cracking of computer systems. THE VERY SAME THING THAT THEY WANTED TO FIGHT DURING THE 80s, 90s and early 2000.

chances are that if your computer is running on a pirated or downloaded version of windows or any other OS and is connected to the internet, YOU ARE NEXT.

Have you ever wondered how they tracked the guy who "wrote" the <I love you> virus?

It's not just the OS.  Most software nowadays have a background "call home" script.

TBH, No. I don't have the time to go Google and Wiki this (and sound smart after copy-pasting links) but I'm guessing that it took them lots of time (and money?) to track those.

Bigla ko lang naisip kasi yung possible course of action at yung pwedeng effect nito sa mga powerless at inosenteng internet users na baka mapagbintangan ng power tripping gov't body na mamintang na lang without respecting the due process (which is similar to a forum mod banning one member's ip add na nadamay pati yung ip add ng iba)

Should've mentioned "go freeware" (most softwares running on Ubuntu are free).

This is like putting a price tag on every Ones and Zeros generated by your computer. If it aint paid for, you aint getting it. Every single digital signature, watermark or any identifying code embedded in a particular "information" has a price, and if you want it, you must pay for it. Otherwise, they will shut you down. I can only imagine that the US will find labor and cost saving devices in order to fully enforce the law, of course they will not send agents across countries, why do that when they can send packets.. tons and tons of it, until the server fails and is rendered "down"

The horrific aspect of the law is the enforcement. Imagine a scenario where both the SOPA and IPA are passed and enforced. A forumer of philmusic quotes something from a website like Encarta Encyclopedia (assuming free wikipedia.org is already down) or an interview of an artist from some music website, Philmusic will automatically get the boot for facilitating piracy and unauthorized use of Intellectual property. Even if Philmusic servers are here in the Philippines, a US judge may summarily order to shut down philmusic without prior notice and hearing, plus the action is In Rem which means that it is enforeceable against "the whole world" no need for personal service of summons, summons may be done by mere PUBLICATION.

With the deep packet inspection feature of the law, the "user" who had committed the said infringement is put to the mercy of the FBI and US COURTS.

SOPA and IPA if passed will definitely change that way we use the internet, and now I can almost hear big brother breathing from the otherside of my telephone..

Section 102(a)(2) permits the attorney general to take action against foreign sites (i.e., sites that do not fall under U.S. jurisdiction) if “the owner or operator of such Internet site is facilitating the commission of [copyright infringement].”

Ooops, guess what?
This is pretty serious, guys. It may drastically change the internet as we know it.

I agree to this...damn..what if this bill would lead to the extinction of the internet?? lol :|

The most effective and supposedly "failproof" way of enforcing SOPA and PIPA is already proposed. They came up with the use of AI, like large numbers of daemons/admins to monitor internet queries. They thought of placing digital watermarks in a big cache which will be counter checked by a daemon or a program acting as an admin. They already agreed with the use of Deep Packet Inspections which will expedite the whole process. Should the watermark tally with a query then voila. A red flag.

I guess it's hackers vs. bots and white hats..

virtual civil war anyone?

(modified it's "deep packet inspection")

very unlikely. The process of counter checking and tallying can be done by the program itself and the whole process will be in the nature of a criminal investigation by the FBI. I am not sure if such function is delegable to a private corporation.  :-(

For now SOPA and PIPA hearings in the US congress has been postponed. Plus the point that Obama is with the internet public on this issue. FACT: Not everyone who uses Megaupload, Rapidshare and other filesharing websites are pirates.  Some do use it for ACTUAL sharing of large files, between client and supplier.

FACT: SOPA is a blanket law.  It is indiscriminate.  So as long as a website is allegedly violating the Copyright law, it's a target.

FACT: Everyone who has used the internet has violated Copyright at least one time, knowingly or unknowingly.

I share other opinions that even though measures like this might and would be implemented, i don't think that 'file sharing' or 'piracy' can be stopped. It may be minimized for now but people will find another way to do it.  Just look at what happened to Kazaa and Limewire, they may be gone but Torrent replaced them more effectively. It seems that technology evolves much faster than laws and regulation does.

The creative industry should think of new ideas of providing better services and access for their products instead of lobbying for controversial and resentful laws.
