Who's your ultimate 90's foreign rock icon?
« on: September 25, 2007, 08:56:31 PM »
Rank the following.. or make your own list. (Artists that cemented their status in the 90's. While I'd like to mention the likes of Morissey, Bono of U2 or Frank Black of The Pixies - both acts are considerably 80's discoveries.)

1. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (always the legend)
2. Thom Yorke of Radiohead (he who introduced the brilliance of alienation)
3. The Gallagher brothers of Oasis (sensitive warfreaks)
4. Bjork (weird, not geeky is the new genius)
5. Stephen Malkmus of Pavement (introducing Indie rock 101)
6. Eddie Veder of Pearl Jam (the grunge daddy)
7. Damon Albarn of Blur (Oasis' long-lost brothers)
8. Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins (bald and great)
9. Rivers Cuomo of Weezer (when early emo's still cool)
10. Jeff Buckley (although arguably, he only produced one album - Grace -- considered to be the best album that spawned in the 90's, his impact is nevertheless felt.)
All these accidents,
That happen,
Follow the dot, Coincidence, Makes sense, Only with you, You don't have to speak, I feel.

I agree with most of your list. I'd put in Chris Cornell for his work with Soundgarden and replace that Pavement dude.

I agree with most of this, though I'd probably replace Stephen Malkmus as well
Others who could be considered:

1. Marilyn Manson
2. Chris Cornell
3. Scott Weiland
4. Courtney Love
5. Trent Reznor
6. Zach dela Rocha (or the entire band)
7. Alanis Morisette
8. Fiona Apple
9. Daniel Johns
10. Red hot chili peppers (it's hard to pick one)

Zach Dela Rocha is definitely one of the best talents the 90's has ever produced. His socio-political sentiments will always be remembered as well as his triumph to make rap-rock/rap-metal in the mainstream pedestal..

Anthony Kiedes too. And the grunge fellas, Scott Weiland, Chris Cornell and the rest.. But of course when grunge music rings to the ear "Kurt" and "Eddie" would always be the names to that you'd fondly recall since both are more than just icons -- they are legends.

COurtney Love, Daniel Johns of Silverchair, Marilyn Manson -- produced minor 90's hit, generate a strong following but nonetheless wane in comparison when we talk about "iconic status" and "creative appeal."

Trent's definitely a good choice. And if ever I'd redo my top10 list again, I'd definitely consider him to be a part of it.

Fiona Apple.. I don't have doubts with her creativity as an artist. But compared to Bjork, Kate Bush, Tori Amos even -- She's way too bland.

Alanis Morisette, also an ok choice. She introduced that Janis Joplin vibe, with more of teenage angst and I-hate-my-ex moments. But of course not enough to make on my list.

Of course it's all subjective.
