vincher already tried that.

biggest problem dyan e hindi properly cured yung mga kahoy. hindi sila stable, malaking possibility na mag warp sya (go out of round) or tuluyang mag crack.

not true...wood is wood <--- too harsh  :-D

what i meant to say is that being "shock proof, crack proof weather proof" has nothing to do with drum shells

anyway, nung huling bagyo, may mga bumagsak kaming puno ng manga. na cut na nila yung mga punong tumumba at pumunta ako agad ng province that weekend. pinili ko yung parts na wide enough for snare shells. nakatabi ngayon yung 8 blocks ng mango tree sa min. give it 10 or 20 years bago ko gawing drums  :-D

marupok ang manga wood, after a year durog na sya, kaya hindi ginagawang furniture ang kahoy na yan. mahogany woog nagiging color black habang tumatagal.

hardness is not the issue...tone is  :-D

mango is a much better tone wood than mahogany. besides phil mahogany is only called mahogany just because it looks like african mahogany. african mahogany is a great tone wood, good for furniture and drums.

what may be good furniture wood may not be good for drums, vice versa. anyway if you want to use mahogany why not? just use properly dried blocks, preferably felled many years ago.

Definitely.  Having the proper tools and machineries can greatly help.  Plus, a good knowledge in woodworking and science (construction, physics, acoustics, etc.), an eye for design and detail, etc etc.

Fantasy ko rin kasi ang makagawa ng sariling drums.  I was a design student back in college, and we had these shop courses, where in we made stuff out of wood and other materials.  Kaya kahit paano, I can relate with crasftsmen.  At kaya taas kamay ako sa mga craftsmen gaya ni Paolo/peeves.

I highly appreciate drums that are made by real drummers.

yup korek, sa tornohan. minsan gusto ko i try yung sangkalan na kahoy. dami nun sa laguna e. ano kaya tunog nun hmmm

other materials, there's fiber glass/kevlar/carbon fiber and mr. tito marquez has covered that part pretty well. acrylic is too expensive.

there is a possibility of building steel shell drums. if you know a cold rolling facility here in manila its worth a try. basically, they use a plain sheet of steel and roll it to your desired diameter. easy as 123. since the sheet is thin enough, no need to cut bearing edges.

biggest issue here i think is warping ng wood, it must be properly dried in and out.

14%? too scientific bro  :-D how the heck do they know its 14% dry anyway hehehe

if you only you can kiln dried wood blocks for a project like this...

14% and below is the standard moisture content para sa wood na acceptable sa construction industry para di na ito mag warp.  me tester na gamit para dito, usually me 2 needle ito na depende ang haba, itutusok sa wood  para mapenetrate nya pati loob.

sir peeves, i should have said, torno muna na me allowance sa thickness ng wood, kiln dry it, then torno uli sa desired thickness and diameter ng drum shell.

^^^ malamang di rin possible yun. when it warps...it warps good then quite possibly crack

i think i gave more than my 2 pesos worth in this thread already so please forgive my skepticism. after spending money on hopeful projects such as these, the chinese/taiwanese will still make the cheapest quality drums. having to build pinoy-made drum is a thing to be proud of but i just cant put the words "cheap, quality, philippines" in one sentence. building shells is not cheap whether conventional ply, stave and almost had a solid shell, that i know from experience. buying taiwanese parts is cheaper here than in the US (as i bought from both places). snare parts alone cost less than 3k.

here's something to drool on and maybe inspire somebody to build a 100% pinoy drum (coz i know now it wont be me)

joyous lake snare drum, its not solid shell, its a stave shell with all wood lugs and throw off. couldnt find his older works with wood hoops too where the only metals parts are the snare wires and tension rods. all hand made by the way
