Interesting stuff about the Sultans. You know those earth-colored bands of unlathed metal? It looks brown coz the finishing process "baked-in" the dirt that comes with hand hammering cymbals. In reality, it can range from black, tothe same golden bronze color, or pink!

Check out these pics of my Sultan hi hats. I cleaned them both with soap and water, then I treated half of the cymbal with the half slice of lemon plus salt scrub cleaning technique. It revealed the true colors of the cymbals! The top hat's unlathed portion had a light brown color with black hammer marks, while the bottom hat had pink metal with brown and black hammer marks.

Interesting! And a fair warning to those who would want to try the lemon+salt, ketchup, or vinegar cleaning techniques. Save those for the fully-lathed models  :) It's also a nice experiment for those with Sultans and Turks who want an even more exotic finish for their pies  :-D If anyone can explain the science of this pink metal phenomenon, thats cool too!  8-)

first encounter was by accident  I was cleaning my Stagg SH splash and china, tapos sabi ko, "wow ok effective pala yung lemon plus salt scrub nagiging shiny ulit sya, pati sa B8 nawawala yung tarnish. siguro ok na kahit once or twice a year tapos periodic cleaning to keep the sheen."

Sound wise, para syang naging HH to HHX or something  I like the effect on the ride, sa hats di ko pa napapansin. I actually like my ride even better

salt and lemon are both corrosive, if you love your pies, stop cleaning them hehehe (personal opinion lang po)

I guess it's a matter of personal preference. Some like their cymbals shiny and clean while some leave them as they are...I was almost bent on cleaning my cymbals, bumili na nga ako ng cymbal cleaner around 2 years ago...but for some reason it's still unopened. After reading threads about cymbal cleaning, I just decided to leave my istanbuls alone, ngayon may patina na ang hats, tingin ko di ko na sila ibebenta parang one of a kind na e.

I still love them though! I don't think I'll sell my ride ever  :)

Kahit sa daliri itest pumapaling eh, as tested by Lazer staff himself.

I've been lookin for a dark ride of the unlathed kind. I found two which i liked: namely the Origin dark ride VS. Turk jazz ride. Now i'm curious as to which is the higher spec cymbal. They sound very similar, except that the origin has more "wash" whereas the turk is drier. Pero they almost feel like the same cymbal. Which is the better cymbal? Pros & cons? I know i should use my ears, but they sound the same the more i hit em. Maybe the experts have more experience, cause i sure as hell can barely distinguish.

Been googling to no avail so i'm postin the question here in case. Kahit yun staff sa lazer actually have no idea when i asked. Nag-google din sila pero wala rin info. Maybe anyone can enlighten me? Which is the higher end?

Thanks mga istanbul experts!

Sir the best people to ask are those from istanbul mehmet. Try sending an email to Mr. Bulent Akbay,Product Specialist & Artist Relations Manager. His email address- artrep@istanbulmehmet.com. He has helped me before.

Offhand the origin is more expensive sa net, so based on the price it may be the higher end cymbal.

I did send a message direct through the istanbul site. No reply as yet. Sige email ko na din. Thanks for the email sir!

Slightly prefer the origin cause it produces a sweet overtone vs the turk na dry. Pero it could be my noob ear. I do notice that seasoned drummers more often than not prefer dark cymbals whereas noobs like myself go for brighter trashier stuff.  Will listen with a fresh pair of ears soon.

Get the origin. in a live setting, the turk will be overpowered lalo na kung hindi mellow genre ang tugtugan mo. you would need that overtone from the origin sa mga bigger venue.

Thanks! Pero how is the consistency of the hand hammered stuff? Isa lang usually ang models so hindi makakapili among the same models. Pero i also compared the origin vs turk in a different lazer branch naman, parang pareho lang sa pandinig ko yun differences & characteristics ng dalawa. My question is should i be choosing between the origin dark in different branches?  I mean meron bang mas maganda or negligible yun? Too much google is bad for you!
