@hazel - i'm serious (hehe). don't even bring a cd of your works... nyahahaha!

well, your opinion on martin is going to change once you use an avalon 737 and an akgc12. haha.

i wont bring a cd i promise but i INSIST on bringing my mp3 player.

i still think the big divide lies in their respective FM curves.

but yes an avalon and a c12 are super expensive tools so yeah that could work.  they are serious tools for serious musicians.

haha.

Awww. c'mon Marvin! That's baiting. We don't have to go that low.

Personally, I'm curious over the other 87 or so forums that alroyT mentioned. Still haven't joined HC yet... I'm so scared....

Here's something I have against loud amps -- they hurt our ears. They damage our hearing. And our ears are supposed to be our best assets in our music-making.

I agree to the nth degree. This is what keeps me away from Purple Haze, sayang oozing pa naman with talents, pero I just can't stand the volume where you can't distinguish one instrument from another.

there is an XT brotherhood? I am partial to the idea of exclusive usage of simulators like the POD for everything. But, I am curious, what unbiased/ biased comments are you referring to? From what I have read so far, people are as open to the idea of using PODs as they are to using amps. The only real limitation that people have are: how loud they can reasonably mic their amps without pissing the neighbors off and what amps they have access to at their studios. One has to face the fact that space - proper studio space - is a premium in the Phils and setting up a proper tracking space costs money to design, build and treat for proper sound. So, naturally, anyone beset with space and financial limitations would end up using a POD because it is as close as you can get to a real amp without toying with the prospect of being evicted for violations of "Disturbing the Peace."

Eric Johnson might prefer amps but it doesn't make him any more creative or credible than Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) who is quite popular for only using DI guitar recordings in his music. Both men look for different sounds in their music which require the usage of particular pieces of gear - i think THAT should be the basis of looking at this amp vs amp sim debate.

nakoooooo...lumabas na naman ang pagka babaero ano? Then again, I like those EQ "curves" as much as "riding" the faders on a sleek console and "tweaking" the knobs on a sweet piece of outboard gear.

Wake up, skunkyfunk. There are biased comments there as much as anywhere else.

besides, what would be an unbiased comment? one that supports the campaign against ampsims, or the pod in particular? i don't think it can get any more unbiased than, "hey man, whatever works".

(*) hey, i just realized, this isn't the f-m thread part 2, this is the pod thread, PART THREE!:-)

AFAIK Trent amped his guitar on a couple of songs from the Downward Spiral BUT processed the signal using the Fairlight computer. The result was a raspy in yer face, get yer lola out of the house buzz tone.

To put an end to this "issue", let's look at Abyss' old post:

"But seriously, if the job of an engineer is to provide options and you have options to do the providing then, what is the problem? Have the guy pick an amp, a guitar, a chair, mic your amp, monitor, repeat tweaking if necessary. The way I see it, the problem should focus on the actual usage of the stuff you DO have access to instead of doing a rhetorical analysis of whether or not it is subjectively sound to say a tube amp is better than a ss digital amp. Got both? Use em. Don't got 'em? use what you got. Tubes aren't going anywhere and neither are digital amps because someone, somewhere is going to use them for some song in some record. In fact, I don't really think using one over the other makes a mountain of a difference if the result rocks, sells records and gets a happy client in the end."

Just one question for you all experienced folks... How often do you use amp sims vs. amps to make a valid observation that amps sims are just as good/better/worse than amps?  90% amp, 10% POD?  80-20? 70-30? 60-40? 0-100?

I remember chuck_sabbath saying there are far more experienced people here than me.  I am not that stupid not to know that.  Pero kung may iidolohin rin lang ako, bakit hindi ko pa idolohin ang mga gumawa ng super recordings such as Brendan O Biren, Andy Wallace and JJ puig? If I had to consider my true heroes in recording, I would bet my ass off that majority of them use, and will surely prefer amps to amp sims in the studio.  Don't believe me?  Go to any recording forum and ask the old farts there and ask what gives the best results.  For all I care, I have been open to the idea of amp sims way before Line 6 came into existence. Heck, I even used my Mesa Boogie DC2's line out (and killed the speaker out) to record guitar and it sounded like arse.  Wala pa ang Line 6 sa Yupangco marami na akong nadownload na soundclips, and I am quite educated (and for you , biased) to say that there are other ways to achieve better tones in a serious recording project.

Chuck_sabbath even bothered to post some of my HC threads to prove his points, but he is very careful in sidelining the fact that more artists prefer the "real things" than emulations.  And for everyone's benefit, here is the list of my threads...

http://acapella.harmony-central.com/search.php?searchid=1555627

I remember alroyt saying "it is my lack of sleep that makes me hear those digital hisses in guitar softsynths like amplitube and guitar rig.  Chuck_sabbath even bothered to post that HC thread in the FM thread.  But why is he conveniently hiding the fact that 11 out of 14 persons answered YES to the poll question "Am I hallucinating when I say I HEAR DIGITAL HISSING WITH GUITAR RIG HIGH GAIN SOUNDS"  ?  Kayo ba, hindi niyo naririnig? Kung hindi, good for you.  Ignorance is bliss.

===========
Regarding the ASH soul sig, that was more of my satiric response to the "XT Brotherhood" sig (in red text colors).  Majority of these folks say the XT slays all amps...

to be continued...

again, i don't remember anybody dismissing the amp as merely for preprod or a not-so-serious tool for music production. as far as i can remember, you're the one who made the harsh generalization that the pod isn't for serious music-making, and those sentences that begin with "nothing beats..."

"there are other ways to achieve better tones in a serious recording project?" you don't need to tell us that. whether you use an amp or an ampsim, that statement remains true. and it is not the same as saying miking an amp is better than using the pod. there are situations where one is going to be better than the other. and i'm educated too, with a few feathers on my cap, and having had hundreds of my work on records and on the air has made me an indirect target of your criticism of recordings of pinoy music.

may i invite you therefore to put your money where your mouth is, and improve OPM with your recording and production skills. at this point in time, i'm already trying my best, and so are most of my colleagues, so if you have better ideas, well, let's hear them, hopefully in music form, and not in long paragraphs.
