I asked Otep Concepcion kung ano pinakaimportante in being a session drummer, note-reading or versatility. He said note-reading.

Its like being so fluent in the English language but not knowing how to read.

if you can play the music properly, reading is not that important. it just makes you learn the music faster. dennis chambers, buddy rich they dont read music. teddy campbell of american idol doesn't read music at first, but he have great ears to play the music properly. and the musical director(riccky miner i think) didnt mind. si bagets hindi din ata nagbabasa, pero grabe mga areglo in jay sa souhtborder. at the end its the music thats important, not whether you can read or not. steve gadd said that in his video

yes, ako rin hinahalo ko lang yung mga beats na nakikita ko, then I can make my own beatings.
sa notes mas madali kang gagawa then just follow the staff positions,
pero sir sabihin ko lang po,
wala pong musician na b.o.b.o. paano po tayo nakakatugtog kung ganun tayo.  :-D :-D

Well... ako ay technical [grape] pero creative genius!  :-D kasi left-handed ako. Mga left-handed persons daw are more developed ang right side of the brain which is the creative side... Medyo mahina ako sa logic eh kaya yung mga musical notes/tempos I consider them logical items/technical things na waterloo ko. Mahina din ako sa MATH!!! AMP!!! hehe  :-o

true, mgandang software yung guitar pro for note reading sa drums, i too learned from it. kasi realtime mo masasabayan yung tugtog, yung 5 ako, mabagal yung 6 hehe, and considering there are lots of guitar pro'ed song out there., in my case i started sa mga simple notes, like AC/DC's songs, ayun if you want to make learning note reading fast, this will be a big help.

Korek.... Musicality, Versatility and Intuition parin ang pinaka importante when playing, although mas ok kung nakakabasa ka ng nota para mas malawak yung range ng pwede mo tugtugin lalo na kung session ka. Ok din ang note reading pag may project kayo na software based eh kaya mong lapatan ng drums yung tugtugan nyo... Another important thing in knowing how to read is when teaching your kid how to drum... I don't know about you guys but I love teaching my kids how to drum and the basics are always from reading notes...

Just let your music fill the empty spaces in you. It's all you have so take advantage of it. It's a gift!

mga braders na marunong mag layout ng notes tulong naman..
sino ba gumagamit dito ng guitarpro tabs?
meron kasi kami acoustic performance sa office namin this coming May..
at wala kaming drummer, pa help naman mag program ni drum beats sa guitarpro
ang setup kasi namin is 1 vocalist, 2 guitarist, and Bass..
then gagamit kami ng guitarpro to simulate the drums.. then kakabit sa mixer/speakers..
lahat ng songs namin meron ng drumbeats courtesy of ultimateguitartabs..
peru ung isa namin kanta wala pa.. forevermore ng side A.. wala kong mahanap na forevermore na merong drums eh..
i tried doing it myself mejo tricky pala gawin..
mahirap tlaga siguro kung di ka naman na natural na drummer.. hahaha
anyway meron bang makakatulong sakin dito na iprogram ung mga notes sa guitarpro??  salamat ng marami!  :)

Ako pre marunong kaso kung ikaw mismo lalapat mejo mahihirapan ka kung di ka masyadong gamay sa nota... pero may tab naman yun kaso mahirap ilapat yung mga rest and dotted notes... lalo na ang mga triplets and sixplets **tama ba?** my advise is for you to get someone na marunong mag plot then or paturo ka ng basics ng drum notes then ikaw na sumipra then lapat mo na... one good thing about it kung ikaw lalapat is matututo ka na and sa mga next line up nyo ikaw na mismo maglalagay... hehe

Share ko lang...

First time ko nag-aral ng drums was way back nung 1st year high school ako.  Tinuruan ako ng pastor  namin dati ng 2 Saturdays sa church namin dati tapos nun tugtog na.  I learned everything sa widow lang.  Noong una kong nakakita ng mga notes about drums (photocopy ng isang lesson from Modern Drummer) sabi ko sa sarili ko "Di ko kailangan ito, pwede ko naman siprahin nalang thru ear."  As the years go by, binalikan ko uli yung mga photocopy sinubukan kong aralin, madali lang pala (compared to other instruments), hehe.  I was amazed na yung mga dati kong di matugtog madali lang pala although I have to practice it slowly at first.  From hand/kit exercises to drum fills and transcription inaral ko siya kahit mabagal, doon ko narealize kung gaano kaimportante ang note reading sa drums at sa iba pang instruments.

For me, we all first learn thru widow and develop from there.  But learning note reading makes our vocabulary wider and maximize our own potential as a musician.  Tsaka ewan ko lang kung ganito rin kayo, mas lalo nadevelop yung tenga/widow ko nung natuto ako ng note reading, mas mabilis kong nasisipra yung tugtog.

note reading will help you understand how rhythym works and how music is arranged hence
the more you know about it the more you can do stuff to it.
Vinnie Coliuata (if ever tama spelling ko), Dave weckl, Virgil DOnati and ll these techy drummers, kaya nila napapalalim palo
dahil alam nila bituka nito hehe.

Tsaka it will help you cover all the basics really well.

Buddy Rich doesn't read music or even drum notes but he was
totally gifted. Kahit tayo may gift din kaso makapal pagkabalot nung gift natin kailang bagbagin lahat
nung balot bago mo makuha and yet we'll get there.

haha totally agree!
for the drum beginners here...
if you're really serious about drumming take drums lessons that will teach you the basic of
drum and music notations...di naman kailangan maging bihasang fast sight reader (unless gusto mo sumabay sa mga orchestra/marching band tlga and seasoned studio musicians) pero napakalaking tulong tlga sa drummer kapag alam mo yung pinaka theory nya na basically it's all about subdivisions. take piano or guitar lessons as well para mas maging all rounded musician kana tlga. remember sight reading won't make you a better drummer over all but it will help you know where the notes are supposed to be played and the more you play the better you become.

yup! madami
merong madaming ways sa pagbabasa ng drum notations at session tugtog sa labas

transcribing is one yung ginagawa ko sa student ko for study materials in the class,so they learn to read notes while playing,
chart reading is one na nakalagay lang yung groove like play samba tapos ilang bara lang nakalagay dun at groove then may mga hits
na bagsakan.
meron naman iba ikaw gagawa ng chart mo one the spot sa rehearsal
meron naman bibigyan ka ng fakebook mostly jazz standards to nangyayari
at meron naman bibigyan ka ng piano part or guitar parts at sasabihin lang sayo feel ng song,
hehe. ganun siya.

as for professional drummer e meron dyan di note readers pero they know thier way to the kit using the ears and lots of experience
pero yung totong session na sa tugtog mismo lalatag yung notes sa isang tugtog sa isang show e ibang field din pero professional way din siya at yun ang nakakatakot.
lahat ng genre pwede from metal to reggae to jazz to rock to classical to polka to novelty.

Note reading might not be a requirement pero this will be a very useful skill for a drummer. Madaming skills ang pwedeng ma-improve kung marunong ka magbasa at posible pati ang bulsa mo  . It will make you a more versatile and a better drummer than the previous you.
