Title: Guthrie Govan appreciation thread
Post by: progressive_pilipinas on November 05, 2009, 07:17:36 PM
When i heard guthrie in 2007, I was so impressed by his technical and melodic skill. He made me want to improve and inspired me to focus on making melodic solos. Right now i am still trying to get out of the scalar/technical rut but i am beginning to improve as i learned to think how guthrie would have done it over the progression.
Melodies - sweeeeet melodies.
Below is a promotion of blues jam tracks with guthrie soloing over the backing tracks.
guthrie---not really a fan but he does have AWESOME dynamics and versatility!
agree. :-)

I've been worshipping guthrie for two or three years now, and never did he disappoint. I can't wait for his follow-up album. Or what if he makes a collaboration with Alex Hutchings? or what if they recorded the Greg Howe-Guthrie Govan-Richie Kotzen masterclass they had last year, that would be insane!
I know he's all over youtube, but check out one of his newer videos: 10 blues licks
Insane!

Guthrie's insane, no doubt. Hands down to this wonderful player who's got great taste and imagination. Erotic Cakes is my favorite album. I love his technical ability and proficiency in various styles from his blues-rock/jazz and fusion shred style. He has varied picking patterns, has an interesting "vocabulary" of lines. His time is solid, very nice phrasing to my ears.
thanks to iamweird for sending me a copy of Erotic Cakes (http://smileyicons.net/s/682.gif)
simula nun, walang mintis... araw araw kong pinapakinggan! (http://smileyicons.net/s/682.gif)(http://smileyicons.net/s/682.gif)(http://smileyicons.net/s/682.gif)

Guthrie has been around the guitar/music scene longer than what most of us know. He turned pro in '91 and he's been active since. Erotic Cakes is his debut album. Some of his early recordings were either a collaboration with other artists or with a band.
FYI, he used to be Asia's guitar player from 2001-2006.

I think Guthrie is far more better than Howe, IMO. He has this unique style of both combination of shredding and blues licks. ibang iba talaga, he's like the modern blues/jazz rock icon thing.

i think it was either guitar world or premier guitar that guthrie showing his new suhr beater guitar all mahogany (http://www.online-discussion.com/GuthrieGovan/Photos/GG_Sig_SN_1.jpg) (http://www.online-discussion.com/GuthrieGovan/Photos/GG_Sig_SN_2.jpg)
This GG model won't have the Flame Maple top, so that'll be different as well to a degree. We really won't know how it exactly sounds until it's finished. It's going to have very focused mids that will cut through like a red-hot knife through butter but still sound warm. - Ed Yoon

lol knew you'd like it..saving up for a sterling or ebmm?
we can change..too bad..some of us would rather climb trees and fling shi.t to others..(personality wise)
Hmmm..still thinkin' about it..though given a chance, i'd definitely go for the EBMM..but I'm actually still happy with my EBMM copy (MIJ), so I don't know, we'll see..hehe..
Yes, we can change, change is inevitable anyway, but I guess it'll take an awfully lot of time before we pinoys accept or elevate that kind of genre to mainstream.

'eto chief share ko lang..sa lahat ng tricks/licks ni Guthrie, 'eto lang halos ang madalas kong ginagawa, ginagamit ko din 'to for warm-up..'eto yung "slippery lick" sa "wonderful slippery thing"..practicin mo 'to araw-araw kahit sa "slow" mode. pag nakuha mo na 'to, magiging madali na s'yo yung mga tapping/ string skipping/ legato with tap style ni Guthrie. Enjoy bro.
Ang dami kong natutunana sa kanya regarding the other shapes of pentatonic major & minor. As of now, modes naman ang binabasa ko. Orig ba?

ive learned a lot from guthries kind of playing, and it helped me finding the right tone..not the tone from gears or guitar, but from the "magical tone" factor from every guitarist fingers.. im talking about calluses, how hard you press the strings, and finding the sweet spot on your fingerboard :-D

First time I heard his song "waves" I was like: "what the? How is this guy doing the main riff?" Until I heard the whole song which is beautiful, especially the melody of the outro. It made me listen to the whole album & I didn't get disappointed. He is a genius.
Same w/ Eric Johnson, Greg Howe & other versatile players, Guthrie thinks outside the box. He's a genius. When you see & hear him play, he'll inspire you to go further in your playing.
Guthrie is one of those guitarists I'll tell my friends, my children & grandchildren about. :-)

**I also find this a little bit ironic. Guthrie, in one of his interviews mentioned that he really wouldn't recommend practicing with a metronome to his students.
Here's an excerpt from that interview:
"Sitting in a room with a metronome, punishing yourself, playing arpeggios like they’re Hail Marys – that’s not going to make you love the instrument, or yourself. Some of that’s good, if the music you hear in your head requires that you have great technique, you have to work at great technique. But try to enjoy it. Remember that great technique is often about trying to make something feel easy. If you play something slowly lots of times, and pretend it’s easy, you get to the point where you can play it effortlessly for hours on end without tiring yourself out. And then one day, if you need to do it a little quicker, you find that you can. If something feels easy, that means you’re doing it right.
The problem with the race against the metronome I think is that everyone tenses up, because they think they’re doing something difficult. That’s how you learn bad habits, and give yourself tendonitis and all of that bad stuff. So take it easy, try and make it sound good – sound is really important, and do something with your playing. Do some demos, write music, join a band, join five bands… have fun, sound good, be in time – obvious things."

Govan's move to Charvel is most likely due to financial reasons. The GG signature model is probably Suhr's best-selling signature guitar, and if I were to speculate, I wouldn't be surprised if Fender/Charvel found out about this statistic and invited him to lead the Charvel revival for more endorsement money than what Suhr gives him. He ain't exactly earning millions of dollars per YouTube demo he uploads, so I guess it's a good money move for him.
I'm not too excited about his upcoming Charvel sig, though.

GG was never really a prime reason for purchasing a suhr. People bought them because they were great instruments. I guess theres a small part of the population that buys signature... but suhr quality just keeps getting better year by year. I personally love my GG sig.. coz its speced out perfectly.
The rasmus guitars are just as great!

If he's getting some serious coin out of it that's good, he deserves it. Suhr definitely had an exposure boost by endorsing players like Govan, Henderson and Landau. They're great instruments no doubt, but so are instruments by other luthiers in that price range. I'm sure Guthrie will have no problem adjusting, it's all in the player anyway.

That notion is imo is built from hype from forums and branding/marketing. Sure these boutique builders have the knowledge and experience but don't forget that most of them cut their teeth working for the big corporations ie. Fender who has several master builders of equal skill. Can Fender/Charvel rival Suhr's guitars? Absolutely, no doubt about it however for the same type of guitar it will run you about $1K or more since they have a much bigger overhead. Good thing about John is his guitars are reasonably priced for what you are getting. For just a bit over $2K you get to spec your own guitar, even down to approximate weight. Having a product from a boutique company doesn't mean it's better than the rest too. Like anything else, mix and match lang, may binabagayan din. I know two of Suhr's endorsee who doesn't use the guitars at least on a regular basis. I asked them why and coincidentally they have the same answer, "too clean, almost too perfect". I saw Landau last month and he's using old Strats. I was a bit taken a back when I heard it thinking there's a million guys who would love to own a Suhr much more be endorsed by the company and these guys couldn't care less. Then again these guys eat, breathe and [gooey brown stuff] guitars 24/7 and they hear things we don't.

I didn't say he has a bad tone, he has a good tone but it's not something that is admired by the big leagues much like Beck or Landau's tone. Don't know about his amp but if I were to guess whatever costs less to him and offer him support wherever he go. One thing I notice on these players is that they already have their tone inside their head so whatever gear they plug into they already know what to boost, cut or pedal to add to achieve it or at least close enough kaya most of the time they sound the same regardless of gear. If one is into mass produced gear does it mean they don't care for their tone? Vince Gill mostly uses Boss pedals and he has a great tone. Jeff Beck isn't into boutique stuff but his tone is revered by many pros. A lot of times you see boutique stuff used by pros because they got them for free or cheaper than the mass produced stuff.

He did stress that out while talking to the fans. Pero, I guess nasa adjustment period pa naman sila ng Charvel and am pretty sure maaayos din nila yan. Agree. Medyo mataas ang "lemon" production rate ng Peavey at that time. Even my Peavey Wolfgang which I absolutely love is just a so-so guitar. It's not really bad, but it sounds ordinary. Nothing special (great on distortion, medyo olats sa cleans) kahit pinalitan ko na ng Bare Knuckle VH II yung bridge pickup at Fernandes FSK-101 yung neck pickup (I love those overextended feedbacking notes in "A Year To The Day" :) ). MM Axis guitars sound great. They're very versatile and very playable. May lemons pa rin, of course, but definitely less than Peavey Wolfgangs.

Yeah, i'm waiting for the specs nga. I remember when EVH moved from MM to Peavey. MM was better, even the Axis after he left mas maganda pa rin compared sa lumabas na Peavey.
Yup, kahit ako mas gusto ko yung EBMM compared to Peavey Wolfgang.

I've tried an EVH-era EBMM before, dude. Grabe ang ganda ng tunog. Boutique-level sya from my assessment. It was on consignment at Cowtown Guitars in Las Vegas, NV. Purple quilt maple top ang finish. Almost $2,600 +7.2% sales tax ang asking price nila, though. Hassle!
But going back to Govan's new signature, I wonder what the pickups are. Wala na rin yung blower switch. It's a pretty useful tool, actually. I'm also a bit concerned about the possible tuning problems that GG experienced in the Frankfurt concert video.

Same here, mate!
The one he used in Frankfurt, as far as I know, is still a prototype. So, am pretty sure marami pang adjustments ang gagawin diyan. Just like what EVH did to his new EVH Wolfgang guitars. Ni-roadtest niya muna nung 2007-2008 reunion tour nila which, was still unbranded at the time.

Good so he can address the tuning problems. Pero his tuners look like it has the locking pegs at the back.

It's sounds more than a vintage strat than the modern Suhr that we got used to hear. I can hear a little choke on his bends with this new guitar, though it looks like it has a flat-ish radius. Maybe he's aiming for a more raw woody tone, rather than an almost perfectly versatile tone (aka the John Suhr formula) on his Suhr Signatures.

BOING, We’ll Do It Live! The Aristocrats At Alvas Showroom Release Date Set For DECEMBER 10!
Hey all. BB here, writing from Athens, Greece as we wrap up our European tour. I’ve got some exciting news…
We are proud to finally announce that BOING, We’ll Do It Live! The Aristocrats At Alvas Showroom will be released on Monday, December 10! And pre-sales will begin sometime in the second half of November. I’m thinking 11/20, give or take a day or two. Not far away, right? When that’s ready to fly, we’ll make a big old noise about it. For now, we just wanted to get the word out that, yes, it’s done, it’s being manufactured as I type, and Marco, Guthrie and I can’t wait to share it with you.
And might I add, this fine collection of Aristocratic music and video will make a great holiday gift, IYKWIMAITYD. (Google it if you’re confused.)
If you want to know more, here’s the press release we’re sending out over the next 24 hours. You can also expect a YouTube preview in the coming days. As they say, watch this space!
And thank you again for being on this list and being interested in what we're up to. We know many of you have been waiting for this live release for a long time. We worked our butts off on it and we promise you won't be disappointed. :-)

ROCK/FUSION POWER TRIO THE ARISTOCRATS TO RELEASE FIRST LIVE CD/DVD BOING, WE’LL DO IT LIVE! ON DECEMBER 10 Guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann are captured live at Alvas Showroom in San Pedro, CA
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 8, 2012) – The rock/fusion power trio The Aristocrats – featuring Guthrie Govan on guitar, Bryan Beller on bass, and Marco Minnemann on drums – will release BOING, We’ll Do It Live! The Aristocrats At Alvas Showroom onDecember 10, 2012. The release will be in two formats: A standard-edition, 14-track, 2CD album, and a Deluxe EditionDVD + 2CD package featuring two additional bonus tracks, bonus audio from soundcheck, additional candid show footage, and bonus interviews with each band member. The 6-camera video was shot in high definition, and the 5.1 surround audio mix was done by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. A 2-channel stereo mix is also available.
Formed practically by demand after a single raucously received set at the Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA in January of 2011, the trio tracked their debut album The Aristocrats [BOING!] just four months later, and released it that September to universal acclaim. But the core energy of the band from the start was their preternatural live chemistry, which became even more explosive during a year’s worth of worldwide touring.
“We’re all definitely proud of the studio album,” says bassist Beller, “but we were just getting to know each other when we cut it. Now that we’ve traveled the world together, we really get each other musically and personally. Honestly, we spend a lot of time making each other laugh to the point of tears. I think that really comes through live, the sense that we’re friends walking a high wire together musically, but also that, sometimes, we just choose to be extremely silly. Somehow it all works.”
BOING, We’ll Do It Live! was captured over two nights in June of 2012 at Alvas Showroom in San Pedro,CA, and features the entire Aristocrats repertoire, plus select material from the trio’s individual back catalogs, and a brand new, previously unreleased song, “Dance Of The Aristocrats.”

DISC ONE 1. Bad Asteroid 2. Greasy Wheel 3. Boing!…I’m In The Back 4. Flatlands 5. I Want A Parrot 6. Blues [strawberry]/Drum Solo 7. Waves

Suhr Badger 30 (or 35) pa rin yung gamit nya dun sa Frankfurt Jazz Festival video na pinost mo the other week, e.

Same as Reb Beach's Suhr body.

Minimal gears lang daw dinala niya. Kaya not even a backup guitar. Ironically he still sounds great with the Marshall.

The marshall was the amp from the event. As we all know (and also stated in the interview), he's a simple straight up guitar guy. he wouldn't wanna dig into a 4-8 or a dozen channel marshall. haha

Well, Marshall amps aren't the best but they still generally sound good. I think the amp in the video is a JVM, which is a really, really good and versatile amp. So ampwise, there's no reason for him not to sound good.
His Charvel looks like a bionic Suhr of sorts. A Strat-esque headstock, a 24-fret Modern-esque neck bolted onto a Standard-esque body. Notice how the neck is bolted onto the body: almost no space between the neck and the neck pickup (for larger wood contact area). GG used a Suhr Standard for quite a while prior to Suhr issuing him a signature Modern, so he should be right at home with his Charvel prototype.

Yes, JVM is a great versatile Marshall amp. That's just one of the few Marshalls today that still has that signature Marshall "punch." But changing amps every now and then won't really bother Guthrie that much. May it be Cornford, Suhr or Marshall, his tone is still as distinctive as a primary color.

"Purple Monkey Dishwasher" is just a comical phrase that formally translates to the distortion of facts when passed from person to person. 'Eto yung for example, may 20 persons, yung first person, may sinabing fact and then yung second person ni-relay naman sa third person and so on hanggang sa pag dating na sa 20th person, iba na yung sinabi nung first person.

Title: Re: Guthrie's new Charvel prototype
Post by: throwinshapes on March 01, 2013, 02:22:51 PM
@gunslinger13 'Beys' is wrong, I suppose. Though basswood is commonly associated with building musical instruments, the 'bass' part doesn't necessarily refer to the musical term of the same name (as in, the vocal quality/pitch). That, and various Internet sources insist on the 'bas' pronounciation as the only way.
@spetsnaz1123 I think that's the first Charvel prototype, which has a koa body instead of basswood/maple.

Let's see if Charvel can reproduce equally resonant guitars once production starts. Prototypes are usually built with more detail since there's always a lot of experimentation involved prior to and during production of a test model.

Prototype, bale, it's an experiment guitar pa. If ever di satisfied yung artist, then usually, the builder makes another improved prototype keenly observing sa mga flaws ng previous prototype. Or maybe totally starting another idea na naman.
Kung satisfied na yung artist, then they will make it an official signature guitar na. Mass production na.

Yup. I think there's something wrong with his patch cables that's why he sounds muddy. But anything after the restoration, ala na, bumawi na si GG. This was taken after his shot daw with guitar mag on his demo of his second guitar.

Not liking the bridge at all :-( Maybe an Ibanez SynchroniZR bridge would look good on his Charvel.
They look fine on that particular Charvel. GG was after the classic or generation one Floyd Rose, thus, the bridge. I, too, love Ibanez's SynchroniZR. But, for me, a real Floyd still has quite the upper-hand when it comes to stability and sturdiness. The Wilkinson VS100 would also be a great substitute, though. :)

Definitely the Floyd is more stable. Hopefully the Charvel is closer to the guitar he has always envisioned and heard in his head. Suhr most likely had limitations so as to keep things uniform. Specifically the gotoh bridges. Since Guthrie obviously had the freedom and time to experiment with all his proto's, I am sure we are gonna get a great sounding and versatile guitar. I will get one when I come into terms with that Floyd bridge. I do have his Suhr sig and I can definitely say that the 510 bridge is not perfectly stable. So I'm sure that's the reason he opted for a truly more stable bridge. I guess I just don't want to see old school appointments on a modern guitar. But hey, we do know the design has never changed because it does work :)

True. Guthrie, actually, had pointed that out quite a few times in some of his live performances. John Suhr should've just slapped-in a VS100 on GG's signature 'coz in my oipinion, the Wilkinson VS100 is waaayyy stable and better than the 510s.

True. Guthrie, actually, had pointed that out quite a few times in some of his live performances. John Suhr should've just slapped-in a VS100 on GG's signature 'coz in my oipinion, the Wilkinson VS100 is waaayyy stable and better than the 510s.
ya agree. The Wilkinson would have been a better choice :)
