TEN O2 BAR
« on: June 24, 2008, 07:39:51 AM »
Taken from Pinoyjazz forum, from Johnny A.
for June 27, Ten O2 Bar  - I understand there are no fees
required:

Surprises! Surprises!

First: This will be a reunion jam between me and Robin Rivera. Most
people know Robin these days as the legendary producer of the
much-lauded Eraserheads, perhaps the most record-breaking rock band to
date in the history of OPM. But it's not much known that Robin was one
of the two original drummers of the U.P. Jazz Ensemble (organized by
Prof. Fred Robles). Ignacio Moran ("Eggie") played in the
medium-to-small ensembles, and Robin played for the Big Band. I was
fortunate to have been in both configurations of the Ensemble. And
before the U.P. Jazz Ensemble was christened as we know it today,
there was an earlier group (organized by Prof. Eliseo Clamor) called
the U.P. Big Band, in which Robin was also the drummer. So Robin and I
go that far back. Well, I called the guy and he agreed to play with me
at TEN-02, so here we are! My last gig with Robin was at the U.P.
Theatre in a benefit concert for Phi Kappa Mu in 1980. This will be an
interesting reunion jam on Friday.

Second: For the purpose of building a "critical mass" for the night, I
decided to invite two other groups to join AFFINITY in the production.
Namely:
--MIKE'S APARTMENT (featuring drummer Jobit Arguelles, who is a member
of this Pinoyjazz list);
--and also, a new band called HELEN (featuring drummer Mikah Azurin,
who is also a list member here.) So, hey, this is going to be a fun
evening, both for the jazz and jazzy. Take your picks!

Third: The good and gracious Ms.Skarlet (still endearingly "Myra" to
me, who used to sing for us in JRCOBB --remember that old band?), had
convinced me to --tadaaa!-- conduct a clinic. Folks, I rarely do this.
Kaya, heto na, pagsamantalahan na ninyo itong clinic na ito kasi
marami akong ishe-share na mga practical applications sa
pag-improvise. We can call this session, "A Practical Approach to
Improv", or "Improv Without The Highfallutin' BS", or "Improvisation
Without Tears". I'll be there around 8PM and if we get enough of a
quorum, we can start right away. The gig starts at 10PM so we have
roughly two hours to woodshed. This will not be instrument-specific, I
will discuss concepts that everybody (no matter what instrument or
genre) can apply right away! Lalo na yung mga rockers na gustong
matuto ng jazz, punta kayo sa TEN-02.

Mabuhay ang Pinoyjazz,
Johnny A.
