Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika
« on: October 18, 2003, 03:22:59 PM »
Anyone out there interested with the OPM from the seventies to the early eighties? I'm looking for info on the beginnings of the Metro Pop festival. Also interested in tracking down some songs and singers. For starters, anyone familiar with the song "Lagi Na Lang"? The lyrics goes something like "...Lagi na lang, ako'y may alinlangan, may pangamba sa 'yong pagmamahal, lagi na lang di ko maunawaan ang pagsintang alay mo...hindi dapat maligalig sa taghoy ng pag-ibig at ang pusoy naglalangit sa tamis ng 'yogn halik, psuo't diwa'y magkasanib sa isa't-isa, o aking sinta..." Does anybody know the original artist(s) who poularized the song? Years ago, it was revived by Panjee Gonzales featuring Joey Genoroso.

"bulag, pipi at bingi" and "anak" by Freddie Aguilar,,,"bulag, pipi, at bingi" won..I think the second song that he entered was "Anak"  it didn't woi any prizes but it was the one that became more popular than the winner's song, gained radio airplay and went intertionally...That is according to my erpatz..hehehe

song finalists at the first metro pop festival 1979

1. Ngumiti, tumawa, magsaya, kumanta - Cynthia Garcia and the Kabataan
2. Minsan Pa - Janet Basco
3. Anak - Freddie Aguilar
4. Ang Dampa Sa Gulod - Imelda Papin
5. Kay Ganda Ng Ating Musika - Hajji Alejandro
6. Pagdating Mo - Celeste Legaspi
7. Saan Ako Patutungo - Nannette Inventor
8. Narito Ako Umiibig - Maricris Bermont
9. Pangako - Rex Demavivas
10.Tayo’y Mga Pinoy - Judas
11.Mahal - Lejan Lopez
12.Suwerte Suwerte Lang - Joel Navarro
13.Pag-Ibig Ako Na Nga Ba - Nick Gonzales
14.Ibig Kong Ibigin Ka - Anthony Castelo

of course "Kay Ganda ng ating musika" was slated to win first prize... the arrangements and lyrics were really for a songfest.... sa intro pa lang eh panalo na.... very slick... but my favorite is Joel Navarro's "Swerte Swerte lang".... talagang dark horse but great song and arrangement...

it would be really worth your while to listen to the songs... it shows you the state of the pinoy music scene back in the 70's...

Yes sir. During that time, it was the usual tandem of Roger Herrera bass and Jun Regalado on drums dominating the session scene.

Notice the tightness of the two in the two songs you mentioned.

Thanks sa info. It's got that tightness and 70s 'likot' lines reminiscent of Chicago Transit lines. Jun Regalado, of course. Yung palo, crisp.

Now forwarding to the 80s, it wasn't a really bad decade after all. The clean chorused guitars and the pop hits were less pretentious (in my humble opinion though), than today's unplugged trend.

How many of us can get away with a song title like "P.S. i Love You"? Not much man...

During that time (o ayan, nabuko na edad ko) what blew me off was another Metropop entry entitled "Aawitin Ko Na Lang" - performed by that great voiced Bong Gabriel.  Sorry, nakalimutan ko yung pangilang Metropop.

If you do listen to bass and drum interplay, this song will strike a nerve.  By the way, I had no idea this song is a Gary Granada classic.  Iba kasi e.

PM mo email mo and i'll send you an mp3.

Bong Gabriel was the voice beyond 'Awitin kong Ito'? Tama ba ung title?

any serious musician wll find Mr. Granada's chords and substitutions a treasure trove. Ang galing talaga. If you remember the guy guested on the defunct 'Ryan Ryan Musikahan' meron silang interplay as huli ng isang song with Gary playing the ukelele. But as far as I can remember, his lines were reminiscent of George Benson (totoo!) sa uke.

I'd also like to bring up another wonderfully arranged and written song: the New Minstrel's SMILE. Perhaps Regalado on durms again..

No.  We're referring to the same song.  Yung ibang kinanta ni Bong was a very nice cover of "Save The Last Dance for Me" and that other song he co-wrote with Egay Guerrero (yungmay lalalala sa chorus na ni-revive ng Side A).

Promise ko pa rin yung mp3. Kukunin ko lang file sa office tapos bato ko sa iyo dito sa haus.  Hindi dsl sa office e at saka may nagmomonitor sa server.

I have heard people talking about it though I admit I haven't tuned in.  You'll be surprised how many of our musicians are actually aware of the program and actually listen regularly.

As one musiko claims, ang sarap din daw pagtripan.

Maybe we should all try having this kundiman dose.

I think there's also Bravo Filipino (Philippine classical music and performances) an hour before that on 98.7.

On TV, they had "Concert at the Park" and years ago, "Aawitan Kita."
