Home Studio Buzz
« on: December 24, 2015, 04:28:58 PM »
Hi po so 2 days ago I went to JB and buy a Scarlett Studio + others to complete my basic home recording studio, which now has

- Laptop
- Scarlett 2i2
- Scarlett CM25 mic
- Scarlett HP60 headphones
- a Baby Taylor installed Elliot Lemi Pickups
- 2 audio speakers with subwoofer (not studio monitors, I connect them from a USB/Karaoke/DVD-ish Player, then the Player's Aux input to the 2i2's output)

Everything's good except for when I plug in my charger, and the Player. I've tried to record in different rooms but also the same buzz occurs when I plug my charger and connect the output speakers which are also powered by electricity.

One problem is also my TRS to TRS cable that is used to connect my guitar to the Audio Interface also having static/buzz sounds, I've switched from 3 cables (one is even new)

Should I go buy an expensive cable to solve my guitar to AI problem? and should I go get a new laptop charger plus also a studio monitor? Thanks.

Maingay talaga laptop when plugged, try recording na battery powered lang.

The worst case scenario is you have a grounding problem in your home electrical system. Or there may be an appliance (like an old refrigerator or aircon) or florescent lighting fixture that is causing it. Finally, your guitar, and not the TRS cable may be noisy.

Process of elimination ang gawin mo.

Sorry for the late reply, I was home sa province and there was no network connection there.

I'm trying to figure it out po, at the moment i'm still waiting for my Electrician to figure out the problem and see. As for the Guitar and TRS, I found out that it's not the problem lol but rather really, grounding problems.

What if kung PC na ang gamit ko, will it still be the same po ba? I'm planning to get an iMac or something stronger since malakas kumain ang recording softwares + video editing softwares.

I also agree that there may be a grounding problem, but generally, sa home studio setups halos lagi Meron yan, lalo na dito sa pinas na uso ang two prong na plugs at walang ground pin.

Regarding sa ground problem, ang tanong muna ay affected ba yung recorded signal? Kung hindi, gamit ka na lang ng magandang earphones pang monitor.

Kung affected naman yung recorded signal, ergo, narerecord pati yung buzz, getting a PC will not help. Mas prone sa interference yun tower type PCs, and in my experience, yun mismo ang cause ng buzz. In addition, kung sa laptop pa lang may problema ka na, ganun din pag iMac kasi ang internals ng mga bagong Apple computers parang laptop din yan pero walang battery, so practically pareho lang.

Hmm includes the recording signal. So ayon I had my friend check my room up, and sabi nya grounding issues talaga. Probably next weekend he'll be fixing things and hopefully it'll be good after. Sadly true nga po na bihira ang mga ground pin plugs dito sa Pilipinas compared sa ibang bansa.

buzzing can come from ambient noise (RF) or using improperly grounded outlets or insufficient shielding of cables. Your outlet should have a 3 prongs and this would help. If you are close to any motors, transformers - these can cause buzzing too.

salamat group!

had this same problem dati... i bought a grounding rod sa electrical hardware... binaon ko sa lupa na malapit sa music room ko... replaced all outlets with the the three pronged one and attached the wire na nakakabit sa grounding rod to the earth ground sa socket... also made sure na lahat ng nasa recording setup ko ay naka 3 prong na power cable.. pati po yung mga power strip.. also much better if you buy a power conditioner.. and a DI box para mawala ground loop specially when recording guitars.. tama sabi ng mga masters.. bihira lang talaga dito sa pinas ang may earth ground.. also read from somewhere na di nag function ng matino ang mga appliances if walang earth ground.. at mas madali daw masira.. mas matindi yung sa UK na power cable/plug... kasi may fuse yun sa loob (thats why its so big) so mas safe mga equipment...
