Request for opinion on Drumkit
« on: March 12, 2009, 02:32:35 AM »
Me and my team have been experimenting on certain drum things and while we have our opinions already, we'd like to ask for yours.

1st Question : what do you think of the drums that produced this soundclip ?
2nd Question: Can you venture a guess what drumkit made this soundclip ?

Your opinions will be highly appreciated. :)

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7415304

BTW YMMV depending on your audio reproduction equipment. Thanks.

Thanks intake. Ang tutoo kasi nyan, I'm not a drummer. I wouldn't know a good kit from a bad one apart from the adage "if it sounds good, it sounds good" although I don't have any real criteria for saying so :-D .

So I ventured that maybe drummers can tell. Kasi kaming gitarista, we can venture relatively reliable  guesses if a guitar playing is a Les Paul or a Strat, solid body or archtop just by the tone and sometimes timbre of a guitar. Baka mga drummer ganun din (I wouldn't know talaga).

Thanks.

IMO

This is a Pearl Export Series 12 & 13 Rack toms, and 16 floor tom
The snare is definitely a metal Snare. Either 14x6 or 6.5inch deep.

As for the cymbals. It's Entry level Set. Either ZBT or 90s Planet Z/Scimitar.

PM me the Answers! hehehe :-D

Ayaw magplay ng high quality audio :(

Anyways...

1st Question : Snare is a wood snare (probably mahogany or poplar) tuned high. Bass drum has no front head (or sobrang loose). All heads are all clear (muffled single ply?). Cymbals... agree ako kay Sandy, add lang ng B8 (somehow it doesn't sound like it's B20).

2nd Question: Can't tell. (hahaha)

Thanks so much guys.

Okay here are the answers.

It's an SX drumkit with inner shells treated with a special fluid I've developed (mga gitarista...alam nyo na siguro kung ano yun :-D ).

Snare is wooden, it's the one that came with the SX kit. Slightly upgraded with a better tensioner and "fat cat"-like snare springs.  Only one tom, the smaller one is installed.

Inigo...galeng grabe. The resonating head of the bass drum was removed. Bubutasin sana namin but sammy wanted to just completely remove it. All heads except the snare are Remo Emperor (yun ba ang single ply?). Snare is wearing a Remo Ambassador head. And yes I bought the donuts for them (mufflers ba tawag dun?) the clear mylar thingies you put on top of the heads. Cymbals are Sabian B8 Student series vintage 1994. Grabe!  Very hot on the trail !

Herbertski: nope it's not the Sonor set hehehe. Di namin masikmura tong kit na to nuon kaya when the Sonor kit came, na-relegate eto to storage. And I gambled either my experiment will fix it (or ruin it all the more) or I'll need to go out and buy a new kit. Apparently, sulit yung sugal tho.

Anyway, I amped the waveform up and re-encoded the file to fixed bitrate mp3 and re-uploaded, just in case you want to hear it again. The high-quality works fine now.

Thanks so much for the comments. It tells me...I gotta go get some better cymbals :-D. Or let the recording drummer bring their own hehehe.

Astig. Hehehe. I kinda studied na (deeply?) the sound want my drums to sound like on record and how to achieve it. I guess may nilaga na ang aking tyaga. :)

I couldn't tell kung ano yung wood ng toms, so I couldn't tell kung hi/mid/low end siya. Probably because of the muffled heads and that the toms were close-miked. I can probably hear the kit's wood more if you use unmuffled heads and if you used room miking. La lang :)

By the way... I think B8 cymbals are only "student" cymbals because they're relatively cheap. I think it's pro-grade, for certain purposes, whatever everyone else thinks. :)

:D . Back in the '90's there really was a B8 Student model set. It was really cheap, we got it for something like 5 thousand for a set of 4 pieces (hi-hats, ride and crash). Then there was the B8 Pro which was on the higher end and that cost about 8 thousand or a little more for the entire set :-D . Maybe they got rid of the Student series, it cannibalized all the other series because it was cheap and sounded good.

haba pa ba pasensya nyo guys ?

I found out that my overheads were phase-reversed with respect to other waveforms of the recording, kaya pala tunog manipis sa mixdown kahit maganda sa project file.

Since I already spilled the beans, baka you guys might want to bear (as in bear) another listen, kasi ako lang pumalo neto and I suck. But it's the sound sana that I want to submit for your reviews :-D . Eto corrected na phasing neto and even on the tinny speaker of my asus eeepc, at least all the cymbals sound good. :-D

1. hiss, masyado malakas
2. naglagay ka ng artificial reverb? pati yung hiss nagkaron ng reverb at dinig na dinig yung nasty trail nya pagpalo sa snare
3. the kit doesnt sound 'together'. the toms are way too low compared sa tuning ng bass at snare at di rin nagcomplement yung cymbals
4. sobrang ingay ng bass drum pedal mo  :-D

Ey thanks Peeves
1. -> I raised the overhead mike gain to +30dB. Baka nga I should reduce it to +19dB. These are the only 2 mike gain settings for the direct mike in ng Delta 1010LT :D.
2. Sa alam ko, patay lahat ng DAW processing neto. Even the DAW EQ is off.
3. Thanks. I have to educate myself on this as in zero ako. I wouldnt know if a kit is "together" or not. As in.

4. Honga hahehehe. Konting WD40 kelangan neto. Pero its a testament to the sensitivity of the mikes ano ? :D

Thanks thanks :D

Sige sige. The room characteristics can change kasi I have 3 large movable gobos inside my room. The wetness or dryness of the room can be adjusted.

Tom or Tue I'll do that.

Eyy diadem. I did as you said. And I did a little something more for the kick drum. I wanna know what you guys think as well. :-D . No the reso head was not put back. I hope it sounds as good in mp3 as it was on the DAW software.

Well...the whole thing is kinda whacked, if only because it's so new. This is a special variant of the acoustic scalarizer which is practically "painted" into the entire interior of the drum shell. I'm testing the results nga e (this thread). Prior to the treatment, we could not stand this SX kit to be committed to record.

Yes this is an acoustic SX drumkit.
