All about Asthma
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:40:36 AM »
Hi guys!

Anyone who has the same condition I have? My asthma started when I was in 2nd year highschool. It stopped for 2 years then re-surfaced again. I then tried swimming to condition my lungs and steer away from medications but when I got back to school, I stopped.

I take Montelukast twice a day for maintenance and I always have my Ventolin inhaler handy for attacks. I take it as needed. My asthma attacks when the weather changes: rain to shine and vice versa. Also when I laugh and cry too much. I can't last long in enclosed spaces like elevators and over crowded vehicles. Also due to prolonged singing.

Have any of you undergone Pulmonary Function Test? How was it? I'm planning to have one by next month.

And no, I haven't tried eating a lizard yet. And I don't believe that.

Share yours.  :-)

Lizard.. Has no effect.

I didn't undergo a Pulmonary Function Test. A quicker and cheaper way is to try the Peak Flow Meter, it only takes you one strong blow to determine if you have asthma (though it is not 100% accurate).

Our medications are different - I use Seretide (Salmeterol + Fluticasone). I also acquired Asthma when I was in 2nd year HS when I had to boil leaves in Zonrox to achieve the skeletonized effect for our Biology project. My mom, who helped me boil it, also acquired Asthma. We stopped taking our medications for more than 2 years now and we haven't had another exacerbation. Remission as always. :)

Hi! I have asthma, pero di na kasing active nung bata ako. Worst experience was nung around 7 years old pa ako.

Naging best friend ko Nebulizer and Ventolin inhalers. Buti ngayon di na masyadong lumalabas.

Your asthma is obviously stress-induced/psychosomatic if it re-occurs that way.  Try imagining yourself relaxing/swimming in a pool when you feel an attack is imminent.

hi michiko. i used to experience frequent asthma attacks when i was in my pre-teens, yet i cannot remember what meds my mom made me take, or if was taking any at all. i remember using a nebulizer but only once. but i am pretty sure i was just resting in case of attacks.

as i grew older, the attacks were less frequent. and pag may attacks ako, i never took any kind of medication. rest lang. and nasanay na ako on regular exercises - weekly basketball games, jogging. last attack ko almost 10 years ago na ata, and never had an attack again. ngayon kahit less frequent na ung exercise ko (pero i make sure meron pa din kahit minsan), still no attacks so far.

i'm no doctor, but if i'm sure what worked for me may work for you, i'd say stop the meds to avoid dependencies on them and don't stop swimming. but i ain't sure :)

Been active for the past month because of the Biggest Loser challenge here in the office. I play badminton thrice a week and jog on weekends. I am swimming too!

Attacks are less frequent but I'm not sure if it's because of the maintenance inhaler or because I am more active now. Matanglawin, I tried what you said but I am scared of turning blue again if I don't take any medications. I can't stand asthma attacks by staying calm, i feel like dying. Gasping for air is a very hard feeling.

Good thing i'm off steroids but still under maintenance. Thank you for sharing!

You might want to try some food supplements. My friend's been using one, so far ok naman ang results  :-)

If you want to try, PM me, I'll get in touch with her

A a very good friend of mine died from asthma last January 2010. Severe asthma resulting to cardiac arrest daw yung findings. Ang nag-trigger daw most probably eh yung mga usok from the fireworks nung new year.

I always smoke, like a pack in 4 or 5 days. I can't help it, kahit inuubo ako in the past 2 weeks.
Ilang beses na rin ako inatake ng asthma a few years ago, siguro ngayon aatakihin ako, or baka asthma na nga to,

I share your sentiments TS, though my asthma is not that severe.
Yung attacks ko is pag may sipon, maalikabok, mainit.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think hindi nawawala yung asthma? Nagbabago lang yung degree ng attacks as we aged.
Ako ang meds ko is ventolin rotahaler (oldschool right :-D) Then pag feel ko na magka asthma, lalo pag sinisipon nag nebulize na ko sa bahay.

i've had asthma since childhood. been in and out with several hospitals since the 1970's. last hospitalization was 2008. from asthmador (its a dark green stinky powder that you lightup and inhale the fumes to to free up the congestion that is limiting the air passages), to marax to asmasolon etc. now I'm on nuelin, ventolin rotacaps and have a nebulizer at the house. I have been brought into the e.r as "status asmaticus" and somehow managed to pull through. I have never been intubated either as a final measure to ventilate the lungs. all I can say is that prevention or knowing when to go to the hospital or calling the doctor, is really important. all of us have different trigger mechanisms in asthma. its just a matter of being constantly alert. i sometimes play in a band and if there is a fog machine then I just have it moved away from my side etc. we alone know if an impending attack is about to happen and i guess we are at the best position to do something about it. always focus and pray/meditate if you are having an attack. be positive always. lame i know. but is works for me.

Ako me inborn ashtma. Perfume nagcologne ako:D smoke i smoked weeds and cig :D dont try this mga bata:D and pet fur nag alaga ako aso. What im trying to say is familiarize your body to what trigger your attack.Eventually, your body will build immunity to this allergens. And fresh oregano leave extract helped me expel excess mucous.I limit myself from taking medicines since i felt it doesnt help me at all during attacks. Once a year or two nalang ngayon. And nagawa ko na yung mga di ko magawa before like having a pet or using a perfume.
Â and by the way kahit ano pang infos at tips mabasa mo sa net. Wala pading tatalo sa body instinct mo at professional's help.:-)

I had severe and frequent asthma attacks as far as I can remember until my college days when I went into sport of swimming. Theres not a week that passed by when I dont have an attack, it was so serious that my limbs look like banana sticks and my ribs protrude from my chest. All of these attacks became fewer and less severe when I exercised regularly at the college pool. Then I added road cycling to my routine and join competitive one-day races from Manila to Batangas (it was lung busting for me but I did it many times). These days I run 5kms daily, play airsoft combat games or take a swim on a weekend and never had any asthma attack for many many years (honestly 2 decades free from attack). I dont even catch cold or cough perhaps because I don't smoke and avoid smokers like a plague. My kids did not inherit the asthma genes from me and I'm so thankful for that yet I encourage them to be physically active and make it a lifestyle. Just remembering those days when you feel youre like dying from the attack evokes strong emotions, I think my battle with asthma is over and I won bigtime and God healed me completely.

sports and exercise bro.. relying on inhalers alone wont solve anything, thus it will just make you depend on it.

Right now ive stopped using inhalers, right now I frequently work out at the gym and do martial arts

my asthma started around when i was 4 yrs old, nakuha ko daw sa balahahibo ng mga aso namen and sa feathers ng mga kalapati namen. hated the feeling, lalo yun labas pasok sa hospital and a really horrible experience on nurses putting a suction apparatus sa baga mo plus i was scared of nebulizers back then, ngyon hinahanap hanap ko yun amoy haha. (thats hard for a child haha).

my parents got me into swimming para maexercise yun lungs ko, plus that ernie baron method of "bawang and honey", plus nebulizers. anyways hindi na bumalik asthma ko simula 13 yrs old ako. kahit papano thankful ko na hindi na siya bumalik.

PS. started smoking when i was in 3rd yrs high school, so much for abusing my asthma free state :)
