Title: Cymbals: To clean/Not to clean
Post by: omnicloud7 on April 10, 2010, 09:47:48 PM
Saw this in other forums, Na-intriga ako sa topic! They say that the patina's what makes the cymbal age, giving it a new tone and sound. Napapansin ko nga rin talaga na a cymbal does sound much more darker and richer as it ages, some prefer this, siguro mostly Jazz drummers, kasi mas nagbleblend na talaga yung tunog nung cymbal. Plus we should never underestimate the power of the stick, nagmemellow yung cymbal dahil lumalambot kahit papaano yung alloy nung cymbals over time due to hitting, ano sa tingin niyo?

After cleaning cymbals, I also do notice that it begins to sound brighter again, siguro kasi yung mga dirt na nastuck sa mga grooves nung cymbal nawala na? so mas madami ng vibrations and attack. Bumabalik yung shimmer! Mas loud na siya ulet.

I always hated that "new cymbal" sound, mas prefer ko yung "aged/darker" sound it produces after time. Just wanted to get your insights mga sir. Let's make this a fun and interesting topic. Thanks!  :-)

same here, i dont personally go for the NEW cymbal sound kasi malakas tlga, but in the other end hindi ko rin nmn gusto na masyadong dark ung sound niya, so i clean it lightly hehehe so that it would sound somewhere in between.

Sa akin naman,I dont clean the traditionally made cymbals, like the K's but for the Brilliant, nililinis ko talaga, kasi mawawala ang character ng pagiging clear and bright and tunog ng brilliant cymbals.

i don't clean mine. i don't care how my cymbals look, just how they sound, and some cymbals do sound better when left to build up a nice patina. there are some, though, that don't really sound all that different whether clean or not--my 18" AAXplosion, for one. at dahil as good if not better ang tunog pag madumi ang cymbal, di ko na sila nililinis.

well since nasa cleaning thread na rin tayo, do you think soaking the cymbal in coke will remove the dirt?

Yung isang sikat na drummer daw for 2-3 years ata binabaon. grabe.

Pero in time, I realized, WTH, stick with the program and let it age.

The dark sounding cymbals, After using I just use a cotton cloth to get the moisture and maybe sweat after playing.

For the Brilliant finish cymbals - I use a cymbals cleaner, To get that bright cutting sound.

I really depends on you. Hahaha.

Wala naman rules sa drums eh.  :-D

I was lucky enough to own one of sir Boy's cymbals. I bought his 70's Avedis 21" Medium Ride.
Pero binenta ko na rin kay herbiboy.
I might reconsider buying it back.

I prefer uncleaned cymbals. I am a fan of dirty cymbals with patina especially the hammering of the rides. I just wipe all my pies from time to time; it's a great way to preserve their logos as well.

Due to the uncertanties of finding the "appropriate" cleaning method/technique, my cymbals ended up as uncleaned. I'm starting to like the aged look... :)

Gunk = changes tone.
Cleaning gunk = changes tone (for better or worse; depends on your ears)

may kakilala akong may nagmamay-ari ng k dark custom set na zidjian. ung medium ride nya eh hindi niya nililinis because may gusto niya yung dark and heavy sound for jazz musics pero yung hats and crash niya lang yung nililinis (not totally bright). It's a very nice combination for that set. sa ngayon, nagpalit siya ng hats, ginawa niyang A custom para may lighter sound.
