What do you prefer? analog or digital recording?
« on: January 24, 2013, 02:46:37 AM »

Analog o Digital??? at bakit?? :?

It depends on to what extent of analog / digital you are refering.
Most people these days use analog preamps/ effects fed to a digital recording set up.
But if you are referring to pure analog recording as in tapes... for my opinion still the best in terms of wholeness of the sound. But not the best in terms of details of the sound. Plus the wear and tear factor in the equipment.

Digital also has several extent of "digitalness". Nandyan ang digital tapes such as adats and dats. Or the most common set up today: hard disk.

Technically it also depends on to what sound you really want to achieve in your music. So its not really a question of digital or analog.

Still we have to take in mind, however digital we go, we still have to bring it back to analog in order to hear it. In fact the sound started as an analog thing.

Tapos i-play back natin yung album sa mga digital devices natin.  :-D

For capturing/recording mas okey talaga analog, then editing/mixing on digital domain and ect... my 2 cents is just fuse the two to get a better outcome.

Ibig kong sabihin sir yung sa Recorder mismo. yung reel to reel tape.  :-D.
At why

btw, if 100% analog devices pa din gagamitin ngayon, masyadong mahal..

hope it helps  :-D

So how did you listen to the album? Via CD or mp3?

Vinyl is nice but is a bear to clean esp. when it gets dirty. We used to have a sort of hollow brush that I would load with water and have it track the vinyl at the same groove as the needle - kept dust to a minimum. Scratches and skips, however, that's another story.

Thing about records is that you have to be particular about the type of needle and tracking weight, etc, etc. but pair it with a good amp (ours was a Sansui 5000A) and some good 3-way speakers (dad built some huge folded horn baffles and loaded it with Pioneers)... sounded awesome.

With tape, esp. open reel, you had to be particular about the type of tape, head alighment and tracking speeds. Faster ips meant better highs but less songs to squeeze into a standard 7" reel, and those 1800 feet tapes could be prone to breaking and stretching. For cassettes, I always loved chrome or metal formulations. Rewinding from the end of a open reel was always a chore.

All in all, I miss those times. Editing, however is another story.

I don't miss splicing tape, be they 1/4" half-track or  2" 24-track.
