Guys, question... who owns here a mac smith copy of an sg and an rj sg copy? between the two copies, which of them would you choose? when i back read this thread, i found out that mac smith  altered some measurements with the guitar for them not to be sued by Gibson and i also saw some rj sgs here that are quite promising. all i knew about these guitars is just mac smiths are made in indonesia and rj are manufactured in korea. i just can't decide which copies would i get... thanks in advance for those sg lovers out there!

hey xinxie, i think RJ sgs are china made. im not sure though but the ones that i saw were MIC. between the two, i think its a matter of trying it out and playing. choose which is the best in terms of playability (feel) and sound. check the hardwares too.

you might want to check out used SG's like greco, burny, tokai.. their low end models are priced around php8k-10k (mint/used). which is way better than mac smith and RJ.

i don't think it's neckthrough bro.. rather, it's a set-neck.. google it for the difference and you'll know what i mean..  :-)

bodywood is also kinda conflicting.. yung nasa site, sabi mahogany daw.. pero nasa specs niya on the same page, alder.. hehe..

friends,

can anyone help me about describing an SG's neck feel as compared to a strat's neck feel? i have a 54 strat with a soft V neck shape?? I don't have any friends with Gibson or Epi SG's and there aren't any guitar shops here that carry Gibby's or Epi's so i don't have any access to try any SG's.. But I want one!!! I'm just curious on what the neck feels like.

if we are talking about 2000-2003 philmusic era, where prices were really cheap haha, then i would agree with dantuts. i used to own the greco sg owned by toybits and was able to sell it for 13k in 03, with gator hardcase and dry Z pups hehe...

but still the MIJ lowend models could be priced as mentioned elsewhere, but not in philmusic where everyone jumps on the bandwagon to profit and stuff. hell, pier used to sell these MIJ even hi-ends at 8-10k during those times...

anyhow, once in a while, some guitars just pop out at good prices where you can never say no..here's my burny sg custom btw:

KABOOOOM..... the best bro..... just need to calibrate the pickups medyo mababa kasi nung nabili ko but now..... its better than before..... the tone..... heavy dude.... you can do slow rock here with good solos..... mid are good but the lows are very good indeed..... the highs siguro kapag nakabisado ko na siya adjust ko na lang pickup ko..... but all in all

TORINO 4         9/10.....    bro try mo..... libre naman try.... ok lang kung tarayan ka... basta matry mo yan oks na yun..... use their quality amp..... nung nagtry kasi ako nung first pinagamit sakin yung sira yung tone knobs pati level... kaya hindi ko malaman kung yung gitara ang may problema.....  try it bro....

medyo chunky ang neck ng SG. more like D shape to me. if you're used to playing with thin neck profile. maninibago ka for sure. i think its more close to a LP actually imho.

it's actually a tricky question if you'd ask me.

i could say it ranges from slim-taper to mid chunky to bat size. in a gibson's POV, they are the same as their LP counterparts in terms of year of manufacture. some have thinner necks or commonly referred to as 60's slim-taper and chunky bat size ones as '59 rounded. the new models i believe (maybe late 90's-2000 to present) do have 59 rounded, unless otherwise stated as 60's neck. so there could be a slim or chunky that would definitely depend on the guitar itself.

here's a few GIBSON SG's i tried:

SG standard (2000) - 59 rounded
SG special (2006) - 59 rounded
SG 70's, i am not sure what model, but has the smaller block inlays - slim taper

as for MIJ's my experience so far with those i've owned:

GRECO - slim-taper

BURNY CUSTOM, the one on the photo above has a wider nut width, as per standard even on LP's, it think 42mm is the normal one, but this burny custom has 43 or so, it's really wide compared to my other guitars, even wider than the burny standard my friend used to own (yeah, its slimtaper that sg standard). well neck is in a mid of chunky and slim

ORVILLE SG- slim taper

a SG MIK EPIPHONE i owned before had a slimmer neck, and smaller nut width, i think it's not even close to 42mm. i have no idea about the latter MIC made.

as for others, i owned an RJ SG before and i think its in the middle of chunky and slim. havananas has one, maybe he can share a bit. also samick sg has a slimmer neck.

well, my advise, first hand feel and test on the guitar you will buy is the best way to determine what you would like. if you're much of a fender guy (which i am not..) i guess you could tailor fit the feel based on your other guitars upon testing. unless you would be fine with different types of neck profile, then that all cool! i personally like a slim one, again, it all boils down to preferences SG's have always been part of my arsenal, there's something in them that screams rock and roll!

obtw, SG's are known to have heavy necks, that's why neck dive is pretty common, it's no-brainer since its a mahogany as compared to the slim feature/cut of the body.

goodluck on your sg hunting! be a member soon!
