oo nga.. technique..
gusto ko ung kay portnoy na nakuha niya from peart na alternate cymbals and other thingies techique.. imbis na hats lang gamit mo.. bells at china alternate ang ginagawa or with tamborine.... sounds nice at kakaloko pag over the bar na.. i tried this one with
alternate open hi hat and bell.. minsan by three's.. kasama ung china while playing
straight 16th or 32nd kicks..
chris adler.. grabe ito.. sabe niya gusto niya magspice up ng beats thru china and splashes.. napaka unique ng beats niya.. at alam mong sya ung pumapalo...
hehe.. ayun..  epekto nito e nagiisip ako ng beat of the box.. mga unusual hehe..
tsaka terry bozzio pala.. melodic stuffs and he's weirdness... hehe..

Techinuques...

Well we have the hard but controlled beats like Lars does.

We also have the fast mofos like Adler, Bittner and Jordison.

But these are very common in metal nowadays, yet soo good.

What really intrigues me is the styles of Haake and Carey.

Haake says Meshuggah plays 4/4 but it is really f*ckin with the minds of the listeners.

Carey has this controlled, not so on the twin peds, but the 'laro' on the kit is crazy.

Check out Vicarious and Jambi, its heavy yet very controlled. He's good coz he doesn't over play.

Drumming is relaxing and sexy 'til I dared to play Meshuggah's poly. Darn.

Guys, thanks for the posts.

Matthew "SPAG" McDonough for putting creativity and melody into metal drumming.
Joey Jordison - showing no mercy through ground and pound drumming.
Danny Carey - creativity din. shows that metal drumming is not just playing straight-ahead 16th double bass beats, toms are not only for fills and odd-times are fun to play with in a metal music.
Vinnie Paul and Mike Portnoy for making metal drumming look oh so cool. 8-)

i love megadeth, not necessarily the drummer, but i have always loved the music of megadeth.

i love megadeth, not necessarily the drummer, but i have always loved the music of megadeth.

even vinnie colaiuta played with megadeth.. sa tunog alam mong xia.. pero pag sa playing with the band.. parang hindi xia.. parang lang... hehe...

for polyrhythms... i love 4 over 3's.. bsat vice versa.. play a 16th running note on the bass continously.. hirap explain pero i'll try.. hehe.. basta ganun ung paa..
to sum this up.. normal to shuffle to combine(normal and shuffle hybrid) to staccato(somewhat)beats.. sinusubukan ko din and blastbeat.. hehe.. i'm
just figuring out un transition niya..                        1    +   2    +   3   +
          1  +    2   +   3    +   4   +                          1 t  l  2 t l  3 t  l  4 t l
hats-  x.........x.........x.........x.........twice to      hh-x......x......x.......x....... twice din
snare-...........x....................x........  tpos          s  -........x...............x......   tpos
bass- x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x diretso dito b -x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.  diretso

     1   +   2    +   3   +    4   +   5    +   6    +
hh-x......x......x.......x.......x......x.......x......x...... tpos twice din.. tpos diretso
s  -..........x.....................x.....................x.........sa last..
b -x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.

     1   +   2    +   3   +    4   +   5    +   6    +
hh-x......x......x.......x.......x......x.......x......x......
s  -x.........x.........x..........x.........x.........x.........
b -x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.x.
hehe.. hirap magtabs.. hehe.. hope this helps.. minsan alternate ung hats ko
with the bell of ride... depende.. minsan splash, bell, china pa nga.. depende sa trip..
ang magiiba... bsta pag polyrhythm.. magcount ka.. it helps though it's
irritating to count out loud.. hehe

@ Carmela- Pinagkaiba ng Metal drummers?.... Most (if not all) Heavymetal drummers use bigger sticks, and larger cymbals. They also tend to be hard-hitters/ skinbashers; but this doesn't mean they can't play dynamically!
It has something to do with the type of music that they play which are normally loud music; So drummers in this genre must find a way in order to deliver an effective heavymetal feel which the music demands.

and by the way, most of them are heavy-drinkers too! :-D..

About the meshuggah, polyrythmic patters...

if anyone here listens to bands like meshuggah mas maiintindihan nyo siguro.
yung approach ko on polyrythyms kasi is more on a guitarist perspective. kasi yung polyrythms ng meshuggah is much more guitar oriented kumpara sa drums, at least for me, and mas madali mahuka yung polyrythyms kung kabisabo mo yung bawat kalabit ng gitara. sa band ko ganun din ang approach ko, what's funny is i dont even know those complicated time signatures but i can play those just by listening to the guitar patterns. siguro advantage yung matagal din ako nag aral ng guitar. mas madali sana ipaliwanag kung may drumkit tayo dito hehe. but i do try to count din pag salisi na yung palo. most of the time 4/4 lang ang time signature ng meshuggah. kaya lang nakakalito is siguro mas naka focus kayo sa bilang ng drums which is for me hindi naman talaga dapat masyadong bilangin. kung papansinin nyo yung rythym ng hats ni thomas haake, 4/4 lang madalas then yung kick and snare nya sumusunod sa gitara then at some point nagkakaroon ng displacement sa pattern dahil usually odd signatures yung mga riffs ng guitars nila kaya umiikot yung kick and snare nya but the hats remain at 4/4. importante din pala yung independence if you want to get into polyrythms. sana nakatulong ako pero mukang hindi e hahaha!  :-D

Well, guitars of Meshuggah are really heavy and polybeats but its more manageable than the drums.
With a guitar anyone can play together with Frederik and Hagstrom, tpos if kick drum lang kaya sabayan.
Kaso the hats stay 4/4 with snare kya challenging.Dats y i like Haake's chops so much, its an art!

Actually, i have been used to speedy beats like Jordison and Bittner or Adler. Its cool, when you play fast, you seem good, thats wat i tot b4. Pero wen i descovered polys, i f*ckd up with my mind. No offense with fast beaters, its all good, pero polys bring me to a level dats so amazing, i look at drumming as an art now.

I mostly play polys, its fun and very challenging. I hope more bands can get into the polys and math metal!

hello... for me.... these's guys are my hero when it comes to drumming....

Master Lars Ulrich <---- always have patterned my style on him through the years, though di sya ganun ka galing sa drum solos, yet i really love the stamina of the guy....

I like:
Joey Jordison (Slipknot)
Matt Sorum (GnR, Velvet Revolver) <--- nothing beats old school 90's

locally
Robert (Sky Church) <--- i've seen this kid play during a guest performance over a Battle of the Bands in Pandacan... i was there at the side of the stage just to watch him very close (i was supposed to be in front of the stage - judge ako nung Battle eh)

mga ser ask ko lng kung ano ung mga muscles n kelangan i work out for metal drumming. bukod sa wrists at arms i know may kinalaman ang lower at upper body para sa balance at stamina. pati proper breathing pag pumapalo. maliit lng kasi ang build ko at gumagamit ako ng mejo mbigat n sticks pra buo ung tunog ng drums pero sa paa ndi gaanong dinig lalo n pag nasabayan n ng gitara at vocals. bka meron kaung ma share n strengthening exercise ng lower body bukod sa running. i know may mga drummers din ditong small build lng pero halimaw pa rin ang palo. thanks.

Any Ride Cymbal siguro sir na hindi heavy. Heavy Ride Cymbals tend to sound GONGY when crashed.
Mas prefer ko ang Medium at Medium Thin rides with a big bell for this :)

K's are usually Dark sounding, for loud band settings, usually you're looking at the Z customs or the A customs. but hey, kung gusto mo ang tunog and it works, why not? :D
