There were similar questions on the Pinoydrums list - one guy just posted "why? why? Why?" and you gotta admit that was a tad too demanding.

My reply was as follows below.

I guess one thing we can implement is some sort of "early warning system" like they do for tsunamis to alert us when the site goes down. I'll ask the mods to text me (or chette) when the site goes down so we know what that happens.

Then maybe I can learn how to restart the server using my 3G phone or something - hehe

Thanks dude -  that's a helluva lot clearer than "Why? Why? Why? " :-)

There is a thread on this topic, posted at
http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,31834.0.html

I'm attributing the server glitches to increased traffic (and thus
increased transactions) at the forum. I've never seen traffic logs so
high before. So apparently the site's popularity has a downside. When
that happens, the webserver hangs, but a simple restart does the
trick.

Obviously If the site goes down and I'm at work, or at a meeting or
driving somewhere - I guess I can't be around to restart it eh? I
really should consider training my dog to monitor the site and text me
when that happens - but of course I may also have to buy a dog first!
:-)

As for the community aspect - yes it remains "the online home of the
pinoy musician" and everyone who plays an instrument is welcome. Just
hope everyone understands that the mods and admins all have other
things to do (day jobs and night jobs make the world go round and pay
the bills beside) apart from being online 24/7 to babysit the site.

Ok I now see there is "Alerta Mobile":
http://www.alertra.com/statushelp.php

I'll check it out. So I  can be alerted by an SMS even when I'm taking a crap. (And that's progress??)

That 'one guy' was me with my initial why why why.

once again, kindly accept my sincere apology for sounding like a demanding prick.

I did not intend that to be demanding though. More of a why why why with a sigh and sad face like--->  :|

here was my reply to your latest yahoogroup response:

Well-said, thanks for the reply Jim. Apologies for my initial why why why. yes a computer literate dog would indeed come in handy. Keep up the good work.

PS: If my apology isn't enough and the need to deal with me face-to-face is necessary so that internet-messaging-misunderstanding could be avoided, I would be glad to meet up since I will be returning to Manila in a weeks' time for the holidays. Let me know if this is necessary.

No harm done and no apologies needed - as for jams and EBs I usually leave that up to BAMF  :)

Looks like Alerta may be that bi -- er I mean dog - will have to check her out first.

pardon me sir Jim. i do not know anything about internet/server/hosting or whatever, but i would just like to ask, is there something that us users can do in order to help you make this very useful and very important forum not crash down? it has become an integral part of the music scene (heaven knows i was able to form a band because of this forum).

perhaps donate a little for server stuff (again, i don't know anything about this, that's why i'm asking) and what-not?

thank you Sir Jim for sharing this "playground" with all of us. this is truly a gem...

peace..

Paolo and Jepoy - thanks for the offers to help, na-touch kami ni Chette diyan, hehehe

About our new server account, I think we're pretty much fine with it based on the specs, and besides I already prepaid for three months. It's just that we've been too busy since the migration from phpBB (doing our real work that is) that we haven't really gone into looking fully into server optimization and all that, but I'm going to plan that out now, especially since we're getting unprecedentedly high site traffic. In the past we had used shared hosting accounts where the site's sysops do all that stuff for us.

Paolo - one thing you can do to help is click on the Google ads :)

The other thing is Chette just reminded me we need 5 more mods to help police the forum, so I'm going to review your application again.... :)

Regarding the system downtime for the time being, one thing we've done is establish an "early warning system" - if the system goes down, the mods send me an SMS the minute they encounter it so we get to restart the server remotely. So far so good.

The last thing, which is addressed to all - I'm really glad you enjoy the forum interaction. I think local musicians were looking for something like this for sometime and it's good that on the whole people are cool with each other and generally friendly - there's very little competition and cutting people down (well, except for a few cases).  Definitely I see that everytime I attend an EB and see that people are making new friends, and talking shop, and forming bands with people they meet online.  Seeing that makes all these technical glitches worthwhile.

The rest of the world doesn't understand us musicians - so we might as well stick together :)

Wonder all you want, but it's not enough for me to consider quitting my job and doing this full time, most definitely

PhilMusic.com has been running in one form or the other for almost ten years now (I think the 10th anniversary is coming up sometime Feb 2007). When I think back on all the cash shoveled into this baby, I've wondered about all the nice material possessions I might have purchased - but maybe some ideas or ideals are worth more than shiny toys, G.A.S. notwithstanding. :-)

Well, it's got a pretty big population. And I think the server needs to be restarted when it's down. Sir Jim can't really always attend to it diba? :-) But oh well, it's the best music site in the country with the best community, and it's FREE, so I ain't complaining. :-D

Naghahang pag mabigat na. Kaya ang ginagawa namin, we restart the server every hour. Ngayon ata, di na sapat yun. Feeling ko kailangan every 30 minutes na. Check mo nga kung may improvement kung yun ang ginawa ko. Not online all the time eh.

Actually, you got it wrong - the server is programmed to reset 24 times a day, not 10 :)

For those who wonder what "mabigat" means - chette refers to the processing load on the server when a large number of concurrent users are engaged in processing-heavy activites - like posting, loading pages, etc.

At over 18,000 members this is no longer a small rinky dink system.

Kung gusto niyo, bigyan mo ako ng P25,000 a month for a dedicated server setup, ha?
