it depends on the lens aperture and the distance between your subject and the background. on a dslr with a wide aperture lens like f/1.4 or f/2.8, you can easily blur the background just by focusing on the subject.

here are some samples. for these shots, i'm using a 70-200mm lens with an aperture of f/2.8

also based on the book i read, there's what they call good bokeh and bad bokeh. a good bokeh would have even circular white discs and bad ones would be uneven blurred disc (white borders with a grayish/off-white center)

ganda ng samples ni randymarsh. taken with whats one of the best bokeh makers. hehe

with that range plus a 2.8 aperture, solid talaga yung bokeh.

kung tele lens gamit mo, kaya din eh. pero pag may wide aperture ka pa, mismo na. and of course, the distance from the background as previously stated.
